A Sort of Meeting

Writers: Ames, Miriah
Date Posted: 29th April 2013

Characters: Gelira, Eirlira
Description: Gelira meets a new candidate and makes an impression
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 13, day 15 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: Rhosyn, K'sedel

Eirlira strode through the barracks with a rolling gait,
giving the glances from the male candidate no outward
sign of acknowledgment; she was, however, very aware
of the looks she received. It was a calculated walk, done
to entice and allure and it was working perfectly. Tossing
her mane over her shoulders, she approached the klah
table, hiding her smile.

Gelira had been so busy helping Rhosyn and working on her craft, that
she'd not spent as much time around the candidate barracks as the
other candidates. She'd hardly had a chance to get to know any of the
new arrivals, but tonight was different. She was done with her studies
and free from her duties with Rhosyn for the time being.

"Hello there," she said to the girl who approached the table. "I don't
think we've had a chance to formally meet. I'm Gelira."

Turning slowly at the sound of a feminine voice, Eirlira
looked over at the girl beside her. Cool eyes flicked over
Gelira, weighing her carefully before her eyes narrowed
almost imperceptibly. "No, we haven't." There was another
pause as she took another moment to measure the girl.
"Eirlira."

Gelria noticed the long pause and found herself wondering if she had
spilled something on her dress. Perhaps it was just that this new girl
had trouble with new people. Gelira decided she was just imagining
things and continued the conversation.

"When did you arrive at the Weyr?"

Smiling sweetly, Eirlira poured a cup of klah and took a sip
before turning to face the other girl. "Last sevenday. Long
enough to know who was important and who...not so much."

Gelira paid little head to any hidden message in her words, if there
was one. "That's good. Have you met the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader yet?"
She herself was on rather friendly terms with Rhosyn now. However, she
hadn't had too many encounters with K'sedel, outside of the times he
had been at the dragonhealers.

Eirlira promptly decided that the girl next to her was rather dense.
Pursing her lips, ready to give a scathing retort, she paused when
the girl mentioned the Weyrleader and Weyrwoman. "No...
I've not." She took another sip of klah. "Do you know them?"
Perhaps a reevaluation of this girl was necessary.

Gelira couldn't say what it was about the girl, but she seemed a bit
stand-offish. Not surprising, really. She'd watched so many others
come to the Weyr and not know how to live and react there. They all
learned, sooner or later.

"Oh, yes," Gelira replied. "I grew up in the Weyr. My father is the
Weyrdragonhealer, so I've spent all my life around the dragons. The
Weyrwoman and Weyrleader are always about and often talk with my
father. I've also been busy working with the Weyrwoman of late, which
is why I haven't been around the candidate barracks much."

Apparently, she would have to make nice with this girl; she had
powerful connections and those could always be useful. She finally
smiled and spoke softly, forcing her expression into a
semblance of warmth. "That must keep you very busy. I'm
sorry, I'm just very uncomfortable here. You must think me horribly rude!"

Gelira smiled at the girl in kindness at those words. "Oh no, it's
okay, really. I've met many newcomers to the Weyr over the Turns and
I've learned that it it takes everyone time to adjust to this new
life. So, where did you live before?" Gelira sipped her klah as they
talked.

Eirlira almost hid her distaste as she answered the question. "Sunstone
Sea Hold. Nothing much there but fish." She sniffed. "It's not that
important. " Her gaze sharpened. "Who else do you know around here?"

"Quite a lot of people," Gelira answered. "I grew up here, so I know
most people. I'm sure I could help you get to know some of them if you
were interested." She wasn't about to list names of all the riders and
people she knew. "Is there someone in particular you were asking if I
knew?" She was curious if Eirlira had already met someone who may have
caught her interest.

How to answer this question...Eirlira considered it quickly. "I would love
for you to introduce me around." She made herself smile widely,
putting a mask of brightness over her features. "Oh, if I'm to be a
rider, and I hope I will be, I think it would be best if I knew those
in authority, right?"

"Of course. It helps to get to know many of the other riders as well,
especially since they will often win your Flights as a rider. I've
been told things just go better when you know people before hand."
Gelira shrugged. She's only experimented once herself, wanting instead
to find something more akin to what her parents had had. "That's what
they say anyway."

The last thing she was worried about was Flights; she was actually
looking forward to the experience, but still nodded with exaggerated
wide eyes. "Oh, it would be so helpful if you did show me around.
I wouldn't want to have a bad experience. **Brainless moron...**

"Great. I have a short time now, or we can arrange to meet some of the
other riders tomorrow when I have fewer commitments," Gelira replied.

She had to prepare properly, so Eirlira shook her head. "Tomorrow is just
fine, thank you."
