Wirnan

Wirnan

He was happy. Happier than he'd been in a good long while. Things
between them were good, compared to where they had been, that is.
Sure, he'd hoped a marriage would give him something more akin to
love, but he could settle for the companionship they were sharing now.
It was _much_
better than the arguing and unhappiness that had plagued
them now since the beginning.

It was a new start. Wirnan wanted to put the past behind them.

It was coming up on a Turn since they had first met. Their lives were
joined together forever now. He wanted this newfound companionship to
continue and the upset to be a thing of the past.

Carrying the flowers in hand, Wirnan hoped she would take well to
them. Opening the door, he entered their quarters.

"Kaya?" He called out, holding the flowers in hand as he entered.

The place was immaculate. Kaya had spent the entire day deep
cleaning. The rugs, the floors, the walls, all the surfaces shone and
gleamed. There had been no cushion unturned, no corner untouched.
The laundry had been sent, then bedsheets changed and turned down.

In truth, it had been a bad day. They were getting further and
further between and it had been some time since she'd had one that
bad, but for some reason, it had struck her. Suddenly. Hard. She
shied away from it and it drove her to clean. And scrub. And scrape.
And turn. She had been a whirlwind that ran through, turned
everything upside down, then rightside up again. Keeping busy helped.
And the upside to such business was that it distracted her while she
worked, and after it was over, she was so tired that she literally
couldn't think. The end of craziness found Kaya crashed out on the
couch, arm curled beneath her head and in a weary slumber.

He found her asleep on the couch. Wirnan smiled as he looked down upon
her. He'd noted the way their quarters had shone. She'd clearly worked
herself so hard that she was exhausted. He didn't want to wake her,
not yet anyway. She looked so calm and peaceful. He moved quietly
about their rooms and got one of the vases they kept. Then, placing
the flowers he'd brought into the vase, he carried it back and set it
on the table near the couch, hoping she would see it when she awoke.

He moved into the bedroom and took off his more formal work clothes,
changing into something more comfortable for the evening.

Kaya didn't stir despite the closeness of the man. She was far too
tired and far too gone for that. The flowers shifted slightly a
moment after they were placed, settling into a final position with a
few blooms pointing toward the young woman stretched out on the couch.
They watched her in silence, their purple petals reaching out as if
to try and caress her dreams.

He came back into the room, glancing at the couch. She was still
sleeping. She looked so peaceful. He really didn't want to wake her.
Sighing, he contemplated what he could do instead. He'd hoped to talk
with her, spend some time with her, perhaps take her for a walk.
Anything to give them a chance to work through things and start fresh.
Yet, now, seeing her resting, he found he couldn't bring himself to
bother her.

Thinking perhaps it would be best to go for a walk as he was feeling
rather bottled up inside, Wirnan stepped from the bedroom towards her.
He had a sudden impulse to hold her in his arms, but he knew _that_
would not go well. Instead he moved to stand near the couch. He needed
to touch her in some way. He leaned over and gently brushed his lips
on the crown of her forehead.

"Sleep well, my love," he whispered. Then feeling a bit foolish at
such a display of affection, he straightened and turned to head
towards the door.
