Jeyme's fingers trembled, causing the letter in her hand to quiver and shake. She had been Searched from the Hold and then Impressed in such a whirlwind that she'd never had time to correspond with her parents about it.
Even before reading the letter, however, she'd had a sinking feeling of dread in anticipation of their reaction.
And, she had been right. Tears blurred her vision as she read the letter but words such as "disowned", and "disgrace" jumped out at her. It wasn't that her parents hated dragonriders so much, but she was a "proper" Hold girl who had been bred to secure a profitable marriage.
Now that she couldn't do that she was no longer deemed a necessary part of their family. It wouldn't have been so bad, the letter read, if she had Impressed a gold.
Her eyes stopped on the word "failure" and she stared at it for a long while. She hadn't even come close to marriage which had been her "entire purpose." All she was worth to her parents was a marriage.
Jeyme snorted, she had seen the way the wives of Emerald Falls simpered and submitted to their husbands like obedient beasts. Jeyme wanted no part of that life. The best a woman could do at the Hold was bare children and sew up her husbands hole filled socks.
**I am better than that.** She angrily crumpled the letter in her hand and then tossed it in the waste basket.
Looking up into the small mirror that hung on the post of her bunk, Jeyme studied the long braid that fell to her waist. A Holdswoman's hair was a part of her glory and pride. What nonsense! Digging through her small trunk of personal belongings she pulled out the belt knife she'd been given after Impressing Quinneth.
"Consider cutting your braid. Thread likes long hair." D'hol had said.
Pulling the braid tight, she stared at herself one last time in be mirror before taking the knife and lobbing off the long braid. Her hair fell just beneath her chin, framing her face. Holding her braid in her hand, Jeyme looked at the hair as a sign of everything that she hated, everything that she didn't want to be.
With a sense of triumph she threw the long braid of hair away. Running her fingers through her hair she smiled at the feeling of the short ends. It was liberating!
She wondered if D'hol would still think her a 'well bred' hold girl now. She knew that some of the other Weyrlings thought that about her as well but she was determined to show them she could work just as hard as they could. Jeyme vowed that she would be the top of her Weyrling class!
