S'jen felt blue.
He didn't really have cause to, but he did. And he knew why, deep
inside, of course. He never had liked birthingdays, and they were worse
when you spent them alone. After hours of moping through the day, he
came to the realization that just because he didn't want to celebrate,
didn't mean he actually *had* to be alone with his morbid thoughts.
Spotting a familiar and welcome face, then, was a relief, and he
actually managed a smile as he approached. "Hey, D'lorn. You've been
quiet."
"Ah well getting dealing with a new class of weyrlings, so
it's been a lot of lesson planning. How have you been?" The greenrider
gave S'jen a friendly smile and offered the empty seat next to him.
"Cosseting my grumpy little grump, breaking the hearts of all and
sundry....the usual, you know." He snagged the seat with a wink, spirits
lifting already.
"Poor Harloth, he was certainly a one-of-a-kind when he was shelled.
Villith seems to like him, though, so at least he's not hopeless." D'lorn
grinned and put a hand on S'jen's shoulder. "Are you not hungry?"
"Oh, he has his perks. Mainly, he comes with me attached, of course!"
It was definitely better to be out here rather than sulking. "Come to think
of it, I haven't eaten much today. Been a little ...distracted."
"Distracted? How come?" Flagging down a serving drudge, he waited till
she came over to take S'jen's order before asking for a refill on his mug.
"Oh, just random thoughts. Depressing ones too, megh. Let's not go there."
He offered a bright smile instead.
"Random depressing thoughts-sounds like Harloth is rubbing off. Maybe you
need a special meal. What's your favorite?" D'lorn was more than happy to
bring S'jen out of his depression. The man looked better with a smile on his
face.
S'jen smiled, his honest smile rather than artificial, with a twisty
touch of warmth and affection. "I appreciate it," he answered softly after answering the man's
question. "So, how you doing? That green madam keeping you on your toes?"
"Oh of course. She's something else, but she's mine and I'm hers so I live to
serve her." D'lorn returned the look with that silly dragonrider grin
that one got when talking about their dragon. "Turn's End is coming, though. Going
to be a big party for that so should be fun."
"*Parties* are always fun," S'jen mock-corrected. "But yeah, another year, eh?
Seems to be flying."
"Maybe it's a good thing. Less turns left in the Pass." D'lorn
remembered what it was like without thread-he had time and could craft or do whatever he
wanted. There was no sense of urgency or seeing his weyrlings threaded in front of
him. Sometimes he wondered if he would last the Pass. "You have party plans, do you?"
S'jen guffawed. "That's far too logical thinking for me, my boy!"
His face fell quickly on the other question, though. "No, not really."
"Well then, let's go have one. Ever been to the vintner hall tavern?"
D'lorn had been itching to get over that way and now he had excuse.
Anyway, it would be fun to get out with S'jen. And it looked like the man
needed it.
"I am not sure if I remember!" S'jen let his eyes twinkle the rest of
that story. "But that sounds wonderful."
"Allright, let me finish this here up and I'll meet you in the Bowl.
You flying or me?" D'lorn began to throw back the rolls he had left.
"Easy, feline." S'jen's eyes sparkled at the sight. "You won't look too good
blue in the face. I can wait five ticks on you, you know."
