Description: Bedjon gets Searched.
Location: Sunstone Seahold
Date: month 13, day 27 of Turn 6
Notes: Bedjon's Intro
Bedjon was holding the cow's head, talking to it in calm tone, keeping it
calm. The animal was middle of birth, but the calf was stuck. Bedjon's
father, Aldjon had his hands inside the animal?s birth canal.
"Shaffit, I can't turn it around," he cursed. Sweat fell to his eyes and he
blinked. He really couldn't afford to lose a good milk-beast. He could
barely afford to feed his family and pay wage for one hired helper. Which he
needed since his second son had moved away with his bride. He needed the
cow and he need the calf to make the ends meet. He pulled his arms out, they
were covered with blood and other goo up to his elbows. "Maybe you should
try, you have smaller hands and magic touch with them," he said.
"Okay, dad," Bedjon agreed. They changed places, Aldjon taking the head to
keep the animal quiet and to prevent it moving around. It mooed with
distress when Bedjon's calming influence was removed. Bedjon quickly
scrubbed his hands and arms, and when a contraction passed, pushed them
inside. He felt around and found the calf. Leg was sideways. Another
contraction came and squeezed his arms. Bedjon waited until it passed and
the muscles around the uterus relaxed again. Then he just turned the calf
to correct position. He barely got his arms out when next contraction pushed
the calf out. Fifteen minutes later he and his father were watching the calf
nurse.
"Whew, that was close call," Aldjon said, and placed his arm around his
son's shoulders. "Good work, Bedjon. Well done."
"Thanks dad," Bedjon smiled at the compliment. His father didn't give them
often, but when he did they meant a lot.
"Let's clean up and go to eat. Mother should have food ready," Aldjon
slapped his son's back.
When they walked across the yard towards their small cot, Bedjon spotted
Krisjic. The fieldhand was trying to meet Bedjon's gaze. Bedjon deliberately
turned his head away, ignoring him. Couldn't Krisjic just accept that it was
over? It had been exciting to plunge into relationship, to discover,
well..sex.. But then he had started to realize that he didn't even like
Krisjic. The man was shifty, demanding and mean. He tried to break up as
gently as he could, but the older man refused to give it up. He just couldn't
believe Bedjon didn't love him. That Bedjon had never really loved him. It
had just been infatuation, born from the knowledge he wasn't alone, that
there were others like him too. There had also been the sweet temptation and
thrill of forbidden fruit. With Aldjon present, Krisjic didn't dare to
approach, and Bedjon was happy to avoid an confrontation.
~*~ Bit later ~*~
The family had gathered to evening meal, when they heard bellow from
outside.
"What was that?" Besenna said with startled and little bit scared voice.
Jonsen was first on the window. "It's dragon! It's dragon and it's landing!"
the ten Turns old yelled and hopped up and down with excitement.
"You stay inside, I go to see what he wants," Aldjon said with stern voice.
Dragons didn't visit their cot, this was rare occurrence.
"She," Jonsen corrected, his head half way out of the window.
The greenrider dismounted, taking her helmet off, and revealing a long
plait, and more of her figure as she took her heavy jacket off. "Good day!"
she called out. "I'm Cerinnar, and this is Loterth. We're here on search."
Aldjon went greet her. "I'm cotholder Aldjon. 'Tis an honor."
"Search!" Jonsen cried and tried to run out of the door. His mother stopped
him.
"Not you, you're too young," she said.
"But I wanna see the dragon!" the boy cried.
"I'm old enough," Albes grinned and stuck out his tongue for the baby
brother.
In the end it was Bedjon, Bealda, and Albes who came out for the Search.
Aldenna stayed indoors. Although she was still valid for Search, she was
also pregnant. The children formed a line in front of the dragon. Bedjon was feeling
nervous. The only time he had seen dragon, was when sweeprider had stopped
to check a burrow on their fields.
"Cotholder Aldjon, Sir, I'm required to ask this next question. Are there
any more young people here between the ages of twelve and twenty two?" the
greenrider asked.
"My pregnant daughter and my son's wife," Aldjon admitted reluctantly His
son in law was just above the age and Krisjic was around twenty-five. The
missing family members were brought out.
"Okay Loterth," Cerinnar told the green. "Tell me what you think." The
dragon looked at each person in the line, trying to catch their eyes for a
moment, and find whatever it was she saw that told her they might just
become a rider in the near future.
It took her some time, but eventually she was done. }:That one,:{ the dragon
told her rider. }:He has potential.:{
"I have to tell you that Loterth has searched one of you," Cerinnar told the
youngsters. "She thinks you," and she pointed to the young man in question,
"Would make a fine dragonrider, if you want to accept the search."
"Me?" Bedjon's jaw fell.
Aldjon however wasn't surprised. He was neither blind or stupid, he had
noticed what was going on between his son and hired man, he just didn't want
to acknowledge it. Perhaps Weyr was better place for his son, although he
was going to miss him and his input on the farm. "It's an honour. Of course
he accepts," the cotholder replied for his son's behalf.
"Are you sure?" asked Cerrinar. "I need to hear it from him."
"Of course I want to go," Bedjon grinned happily. Weyr! A place where he
could be freely himself.
"Then when you are ready, I'll take you back to River Bluff."
