"Arima!" J'an spotted the Master Vintner as she left the dining cavern. "I was hoping I'd catch you," he said.
Arima stifened slightly, as if dreading what was to come. She pasted a smile on her face and turned to the weyrlingmaster, "Yes, J'an?"
"I wanted to speak to you about Marza," he said. There was no use beating about the bush with Arima. He was sure that she was feeling mixed emotions on seeing her granddaughter become a weyrling. Nothing could change that fact now, but it was always best to have these things out in the open. Then at least they all knew where they stood.
"I wanted to tell you that I did not encourage her at all. You know that the weyrborn have the right to stand if they so choose."
Arima frowned slightly, "I know J'an. It doesn't mean I have to like it."
The master vinter reached forward and put her hand on J'an's arm, "She'll be okay, won't she? You can keep her safe?"
"I'll look out for her, that's all I can promise."
"But you can't promise she'll be safe." Arima looked pleedingly at J'an, "Oh J'an, I don't know what I'd do without her!"
"I..." It was difficult to think how to phrase this, Weyrlinghood was dangerous, everyone knew that. "I'll do the best I can."
Arima frowned, "But it might not be enough. I told her not to do it!"
"She would have been found by Crearith anyway," said J'an gently. Those who chose not to stand would more than likely watch, and that meant impression from the stands could and did occur. "Or that little green would have died."
The Vintner's eyes widened at the thought of a dragon's death. She put her hand to her mouth. "Oh." Arima looked up almost apologetically at J'an, "I hadn't thought of that."
"Not many like to think of that," he said gently. It was a happening all riders hated. "But look at it this way, impression tends to bring out the best in people, it will probably do her the world of good."
"She's pretty good already, I guess," Arima frowned at J'an, "I still don't like the idea of her on a dragon."
"It might take some getting used to, but one day you'll look at the pair of them and wonder how it all happened."
"Maybe I'll get used to it .. "
"You will," he said, the rest of the sentence, which would have ended 'for her sake', left unsaid.
Arima just made a face at him.
