Lenala

Lenala

Sitting there at the head table in the Dining Cavern, Rhosyn
tore her rolls open and started to butter them. They were fresh
and smelled wonderful. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw
Lenala heading her way and thought about the conversation she
had been considering for a bit. The flight had gone well, thank
Faranth, so that was an improvement. Still, after talking with
N'vanik, she recognized some changes needed to be made and it
was part of her responsibility to see that they were.

"Good morning, Rhosyn," Lenala greeted with a nod and a smile.

"Morning." She let her get settled and begin eating before she
broached the subject. "Congratulations. I hear things went well.
How are you and Vilarth feeling?"

"Vilarth is smug and tired, like always after Flight. I'm fine,"
Lenala replied.

"Good. So I was thinking...if something happened to me..say...and
I couldn't fulfill my duties for a bit, would you be ready and willing
to take over completely until I could?" Her eyes watched Lenala,
wondering if the other woman was at least capable of giving an honest
answer. Rhosyn wanted this conversation to go easy.

Lenala looked like she would like to bolt out of the door, her
eyes showing whites. "I...don't know," she said with an insecure voice.

"It's okay. It's not your fault. Lenala, I think you got the short
end of the stick on training. I know that it's a bit late now, but
it's part of my job to see that you would be ready to run this Weyr if
need be, or another one if you were ever needed to. I intend on fulfilling
my obligations and helping you to feel more confident about your abilities."

Rhosyn's voice was slow and filled with concern for her second. She
knew how damaging it could be for the Weyr if something happened and it
went to incapable hands. "Do you think that would help you?"

Lenala shrugged and pulled a seat for herself. "I don't know. I
mean, I know what a Weyrwoman does. I know how to do all the things
she's supposed to do. The hidework is not a problem and I've led the
wing while Orlaith has been with the eggs without problems." Self analysis
wasn't her strong point, but she was trying. When she was leading the
Wing, she never strayed from the plans or changed a thing. She followed
the Weyrwoman's plans to the last detail. "It's the responsibility I'm
not sure about. Can I do it, am I strong enough?" She was biting her lip.

}: Of course you are. If you weren't, I wouldn't have chosen you,"
Vilarth reassured her. She just couldn't understand why her rider
didn't have more confidence in her own abilities.

"Can I make the hard decisions?" That was the big issue. As a 'Second,
she could always dump those to someone else's lap.

"Right...So maybe what we need to do is to start testing you. To see
if you can and get your confidence back. That way, when the time comes,
you won't panic but will know that you're doing right." Rhosyn could think
of a few areas where she could give Lenala more rope where it wouldn't
harm anything to start with. "Where do you think would be a good place
to start for you?"

"I don't know," Lenala replied. Too bad she couldn't use the eyelash
batting with Rhosyn. Making yourself appear helpless worked like magic
with the men. Too bad it didn't work with women.

"In the past, what things have you had troubles with?" She tried to direct
her, but having a conversation with Lenala was sometimes like speaking
with a board. **Patience**

"Giving orders," Lenala said after a moment of thought. And then there
was losing control of Vilarth during Mating Flights, but she didn't intend
to bring that sore spot back to daylight.

"Okay....perhaps some more practice designing and leading drills then to
work that out." Rhosyn made some notes on the small little piece of hide
she had set there to scrawl things on.

Lenala just nodded mutely. What was she getting herself into?
