Description: The two of them discuss the senior weyrlings and their prospects.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 9, day 2 of Turn 6

Sitting in his office, he made sure to check his notes before the
bronzerider was due to arrive. He had these chats every few months
so it was nothing new and J'ren wasn't intimidating like K'reyel could
be at times so that was something anyway.
A knock on the door announced the arrival of the bronzerider and J'ren
stepped inside, then nodded politely to D'lorn. He closed the door
behind him and then moved over to the desk where D'lorn sat. "My
apologies for taking so long, had a wing issue I couldn't leave."
"Not a problem, Wingsecond. I got some things done while I was
waiting anyway." He gestured to some of the hides waiting in his inbox
with a smile. "There's water and sandwiches if you want some," the
greenrider offered before waiting to change subjects.
"Ah, yes that would be great, thanks. I managed to miss lunch." J'ren
plopped in a chair then reached forward to take one of the proffered
sandwiches. "Everything going all right with you?"
"Same as usual. Work, caring for Villith, and all that. Of course she's
about ready to go up so there's that too." He shrugged since it was
part of a greenrider's life, but it did sort of add a little tweak to his
demeanor. "You?"
"Same old same old. Working, living, enjoying what little downtime I
can find." J'ren gave a lopsided grin and echoed the shrug. "Nothing
new."
"Well you soon will have new wingriders to worry about. Most of the class
will be on track to graduate on time except we have a few young ones. They
all look good so far, though, with few problems except L'ris has had to
do some bond building." Thinking of Tyerth, D'lorn smiled.
"Does he now?" J'ren arched an eyebrow at that. "With his dragon?"
"Aye. Tyerth is very....exuberant. L'ris has had to learn how to control
him and how to turn that to an advantage with the brown. I'm hoping as he
grows into his maturity he'll settle down some but they don't always so.." He
shrugged, not knowing how it would go.
"Interesting. I find browns are usually the more grounded, but of course,
there are exceptions." J'ren wondered if that exuberance and energy could
be put to good use. Of course, that was more for the Weyrlingmaster to deal
with, not him. "Perhaps. Perhaps I'll keep an eye on him. See how things go."
"Yeah...we'll have to see how they do when it comes graduation time. If he
isn't fully ready, then I'm sure there will be a discussion anyway." D'lorn crossed
off that name. "Are there any you have questions about?" Of course the wingleaders
often observed lessons to see which weyrlings they wanted to tap.
"How is A'shel doing?" J'ren didn't really know the Weyrling, but he'd heard about
the boy before and after the hatching. "I've heard he's improved since Impression.
What's your opinion of his progress?"
"Well, he was one of the young ones, but I think his previous background in dragonhealer
training with Y'gel helped a lot for his adjustment. It gave him some knowledge he
never had from the Hold and helped him get used to the dragons. Of course-a significant
worry about that one is how he's going to respond to a mating flight but we won't know
until Himarth chases." D'lorn frowned, not wanting to reveal too much about the situation,
but since the boy had been a holder, it was a common enough issue though it could be
greater for him. Many in the Weyr had heard that story.
J'ren nodded slowly. Yes, that could be an issue, but J'ren sincerely hoped that it wouldn't be.
"He's another one to keep an eye on I suppose. He looks like he's filled out since Impressing as
well." Impression often did that, helped people change in positive ways.
"Ummhm, gained some confidence. We had a greenrider managed to let his dragon overdo
it with flight training though so that one may be held back. Not a good listener." The look on
D'lorn's face said he was sure that pair would be trouble.
"That could be dangerous. I can understand why he might be held back." Not listening
not only put the greenrider and his dragon in danger, but other rider pairs as well. "Anyone
else look interesting? Or like a problem?"
"Not really so far. It's a pretty well rounded class. Waiting to see if the bronzeriders will show
leadership potential." He turned to J'ren since that man would know more about that sort of
thing having been through it himself.
"Bronzeriders in general should work on their leadership skills." One never knew when one
would be put into a leadership position, as J'ren had found. "They've been working with more
experienced riders...the one I had seemed promising."
"Good to hear." D'lorn shuffled his papers. "Well that's all I had here to discuss. Are there any
you considered tapping when the time comes?" That was more of a curious question.
"Well, that's not really up to me." J'ren gave him a lopsided grin. "But if A'shel continues to do
well, we could use another blue or two. K'dee also seems like he would be a good addition. I'll
mention those to U'das, most likely."
D'lorn nodded. He understood the wingleaders made the final decisions, but he was sure the
seconds shared their opinions on the matter since it made sense. "Fair enough. I'll let you get
back to whatever business you had. Me-I've got to do some hidework." He frowned, looking at the pile
that seemed to be leaning to one side dangerously.
"You and me both." J'ren gave an overdramatic sigh, then grinned. "An exciting life. I'll catch you
later D'lorn."
