Devyn

With U'kaiah off visiting Tavia, D'ale had pushed the wing through
it's newest maneuvers in today's drills. There were some minor
positioning changes he wanted to implement so as he looked over the
chart in the Wingroom He called out to one if the newer greenriders in
his 9.

He motioned her over and went back to leaning on the table studying
the formation schematic.

Devyn hadn't been in U'kaiah's wing very long, she wasn't new to the
Weyr, but she was somewhat new to this Wing of dragonriders. Still,
she kept her head down, and her thoughts focused and worked hard. So
when the Wingsecond, D'ale, motioned her over, Devyn tried not to let
nerves get the best of her. Had she done something wrong? **Of course
I haven't, I've been working hard.** She tried to assure herself.
Maybe she wasn't cut out for this Wing? **That's nonsense, I'm a good
dragonrider.**

After this mini pep talk, Devyn was able to approach D'ale with an
effortless smile, "Wingsecond," she said by way of greeting.

D'ale looked up with a friendly smile. "Hello Devyn, how are you
settling into the wing?" He liked to keep tabs on the riders to make
sure they were learning the maneuvers and felt confident they knew
what to do when he gave a command.

Devyn waved her hand to dismiss any worry that her Wingsecond might
have over her and Ellyth's capabilities in the air, "Don't worry about
us, Sir, we're doing fine. Every Wing does things a bit different, but
we're catching on quick." She promised.

"Yes you are," he smiled. He'd watched her progress and thought she
was actually doing a bit better than several of his more experienced
riders. "In fact, I was thinking of moving you to the outside position
in your row. Your green is very steady and would anchor that line
quite well."

The tension inside of Devyn eased at the Wingescond's compliment and
she relaxed enough to smile, "Oh, thank you. I'm sure Ellyth and I
could handle that, sir." While the green normally didn't do anything
productive unless a bronze was nearby, Ellyth was a good, solid flyer
during Threadfall.

"Good," he said looking back down at his chart and making a note to go
over the change later with U'kaiah. "Are you practicing your gitar,"
he asked completely off topic.

Ah, a topic that made Devyn comfortable, "As much as I can, you know
how it is, some days I've tossed so many firestone sacks, or mended
riding straps to the point that I can barely work my hands enough to
play."

"Aye, I know that feeling," he said honestly. "But you must find time
to practice every day. Are you working with one of the Harpers?" It
was rare that he found another rider as involved in the gitar as he
was and he took every opportunity to encourage where he could.

Devyn shook her head, "No, not yet, I've mostly just been entertaining
Ellynth with my playing here lately." She grinned a little as she
thought back on those nights when Ellynth had asked her if she could
play her "stringed gourd" elsewhere.

"Then we should get together and work up some duets." D'ale smiled
encouragingly.

"I would like that a lot D'ale, just contact me any time you have a
free moment." Devyn smiled at her Wingsecond, "I'll see you around
then?"

"I'll do that," he nodded waving a dismissal and bent back over his
notes from the recent drill. He'd be happy when U'kaiah got back and
could take a look at the new formation. Maybe he'd just take the hides
for a quick hop over to Dolphin Cove to consult with him.
