D'arvn

D'arvn

"You idiot," E'rae found himself muttering. Throwing his awful tasting
klah into the fire, he looked around for a better brew. That had been
sitting too long and he hadn't paid enough attention. Moving his lips
to get the bad taste from his mouth, he headed to the nearest klah pot.
"Any good?"

D'arvn took a sip from his own recently poured cup. "Passable," he
pronounced. "I think someone will be coming up with a fresh pot
shortly."

"I swear if a man can't get good klah these days.." E'rae sighed
and turned to look at the drudges to see if one was bearing klah.
"Used to brew my own but I'm never in the weyr long enough now."

"U'fouinn makes a great klah," he said bragging a little on his
weyrmate. "I've never had the knack."

"I drank a lot of it at home, but it was always mother's job. Here,
I depend on the ones down here much of the time. It's like roulette-
sometimes you get it and sometimes you don't." E'rae sighed and
wondered if they could find a good woman to just handle the klah all day.

"Are you hold born then," asked the blonde rider. He himself was a
child of the Weyr, his father and mother both being Weyrborn
themselves. He'd been lucky enough that his mother was also a foster
mother so she'd kept him as one of her brood though she never made any
difference between him and any of his foster brothers and sisters.

"Aye, I'm from Garnet Valley," he said proudly. With his upbringing, E'rae
found that he usually had more skills than the Weyrbred men.

"Pretty place," he mused. "I've been there many times."

"Yeah we fly thread for them. I visit every now and again but not very
often." Of course the Weyr was his home now even if there was a very
small part of him that wished he could be hunting with his brother again.

"Do you still have family there?" D'arvn thought that might be a bit hard.

"Sure do. My mother and father are there, cousins and such. My sister
is here, but only because she takes care of my daughter and she hasn't
found a husband yet." He considered that. Perhaps he should try to help
her. Then again a bluerider brother might harm more than it would help.

"Well maybe we should stop there come the next clutch and see what
Falzeth can find. He's shown some searching skills this last time
around. One of his picks Impressed brown!" D'arvn was pretty proud of
his blue's sense of that kid.

"Congratulations," E'rae offered easily. "Leith's too busy chasing
after greens to worry about Searching even if he had the ability.
If you ever want to go hunting, though, we could do that." He hadn't
been out in some time. Come to think of it, he wondered if he could
talk K'mai into it.

D'arvn tilted a smile at E'rae. "That would be great!"

"You any good with a bow?" Some men preferred to use other means, but
that was the bluerider's weapon of choice. Of course he also had a
dragon that didn't mind chasing things down.

"I'm fairly decent," he said with a smile.

"MMM....I'll have to see when it's okay to go then. It's better if you
wait till the young ones are grown enough to hunt. Easier pickings that
way." Otherwise, they tended to hide a lot more and it took more time.

"Aye," he said. "But if you'd rather have an afternoon of fun, you can
lay a few snares and then pass your time more pleasantly on the beach."

"True, though you lose the thrill of the hunt." E'rae was considered by
some to be strange that way, but he was very particular about how he
treated the animals he hunted. He believed that they deserved proper
respect.

"Depends what you're hunting." D'arvn leered trying to make sure E'rae
got his meaning.

He was pretty sure the other rider had a weyrmate, but E'rae didn't want
to point that out. As it was, he was trying to figure things out with
Jaylene and he knew he couldn't screw that up or she'd probably put him
on point for the rest of his life. Not wanting to be rude, he have his
best reply. "I'm more into cutting things into pieces."

D'arvn laughed, amused at the other man's response. "To each his own I
guess." Looking at Rukbat in the sky he added. "Well, it's been grand
but I need to get to Dolphin Cove before everyone goes to sleep. I'll
see you soon."
