Nocte had been working hard with a few of the new weyrlings and had come back to her weyr tired and wanting a rest. It had been a long day and she was in need of a good soak and some quiet. She smiled as she walked into her weyr to find Vykor waiting. He had a nice dinner waiting for her that had gone cold during his wait. He was trying not to feel inadequate. He was still having problems dealing with what he knew would eventually happen. He sat quietly as she walked in.

Nocte smiled as she sat down. "It all looks wonderful."

"It would have been warm had you come when you were supposed to. What kept you so long and why couldn't you have sent me word?" He tried not to sound hurt. He knew she had her own things to tend to. He just didn't understand why he wasn't one of them. She seemed to be to busy for him. Or perhaps she wished to avoid him.

Nocte frowned as she noticed his underlying hurt and upset. "I was working with a few of the new weyrlings. They needed a little extra help and I gave it to them. They needed someone to talk to and I figured I should help. I didn't think it would take so long and didn't think about what candlemark it was. I'm sorry I wasn't here." She was worried. He had been more edgy since the hatching. He had told her he was fine with not impressing but she was sure he was hurt by it.

Vykor sat a moment. He was sure there had been more to it then that. He knew she had been noticed by a few of the other guys. He had known of at least two. Of course they were both weyrlings now. He wasn't. One had even impressed a bronze. Suddenly he knew it had been those two that had kept her. They had been jealous of him. The fact that she spent so much time with them was more then enough to make him upset. In fact it made him down right mad. "So, you would rather spend time with Habijos and Nilios, then me? You would rather be with other dragonriders then with lowly me? What am I? Just a lowly candidate?"

Nocte was dumbfounded. This was a side of him she had yet to see. "Vy, I was helping them, nothing more. I was just answering questions. You are the one I care for."

"Oh really. I believe you are just like all the others in my life. You try to make me feel like I mean something only to humiliate me in the end. For once I had hopes of finding someone who would see some good in me. Instead you use me until you can find something better. I was a pity relationship.
Now you spend as much time away from me as you can." He was losing what sanity he had. He had been coming along so well. Perhaps he was just not cut out to be a dragonrider. Perhaps he wasn't ready. Perhaps there was too much hurt inside. So much so, that he was sitting here taking it out on Nocte. He knew deep inside that he didn't mean any of this. He was just frustrated. He was also afraid that his problems were causing her trouble and hurt. He needed to find out what he wanted in life and what he needed to get past his, well past. Perhaps he needed to get away for a while. Nocte sat there. Her heart was breaking as she heard all he said. "You really believe that?" She croaked out past the tears in her throat.

"I think it is time for me to leave. I can't do it anymore Nocte." And with that he walked out of her life and decided never to return. In the cover of night he left the weyr behind and disappeared into the darkness to deal with his past and his life on his own. In his heart he would carry the wounded look he saw in his first loves eyes as he left to save her all the hurt. He did not want to pull her down into his insane world. Perhaps he would return to her when he finally finds himself. But, for now he must leave to find himself. In the background as he slipped into darkness could be heard the sad trill of firelizards saying goodbye to one another.
