Description: The Weyrwoman congratulates the new bluerider.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 5, day 4 of Turn 6
The impressions had been made and the weyrlings had gotten settled.
Now they were all starting to filter into the feast and the Weyrwoman
made it a point to congratulate all of them. One of them, in particular,
was proving harder to track down. And so, when she saw A'shel in a
corner, she came toward him.
The slender lad was sitting quiet, still a bit in shock at what had
just happened. His equally slender mother was sitting close beside
him, her arm wrapped about his shoulders, her face tear stained, her
entire being lit up in joy for her only child.
She saw the mother and so she was slower as she came forward. Still,
Rhosyn was now in her hatching finery and it was easy to spot the Weyrwoman. "Congratulations, A'shel, rider of blue Himarth." Her smile was easy enough. She had gotten him this far.
The boy's mother sniffled a tear away and shook her head. "I never
thought something so wonderful as this would ever happen to my child.
Thank you Weyrwoman for allowing both of us to live here and for
Angshel to get a chance at a better life than I could have given him."
She held her slightly sheepish looking child close to her.
K'sedel had made that decision, though Rhosyn had supported it, but the
goldrider didn't correct the woman. "He Impressed on his own. And now he's
going to be a weyrling so that someday he can be above me, flaming thread
so I don't have to." Again, that slow grin made its way onto her face.
Mera smiled at the Weyrwoman's words. Her son, a dragonrider! No
words seemed good enough to say what was in her heart. She squeezed
A'shel's shoulders and tried to wipe a tear or two away.
The new bluerider looked up to Rhosyn, not quite as thrilled as his
mum. He had done something he had been told he wasn't allowed to do.
Back in the Hold, that would have meant a beating. What would Rhosyn
do to him?
"Tonight, you need to feast as much you can. Tomorrow, your new life will begin. For a long while it will be nothing but caring for your dragonet." She wanted him to understand he needed to rest.
"But what about my Healing classes?" Because of his condition he
hadn't even been thought of going into candidate classes and
therefore had no idea that he was needed in the weyrling classes the
next day.
"You can't craft during weyrlinghood or during your first few turns as a
wingrider. You have to learn how to be a rider before you can do that. You'll learn some dragonhealing as necessary before then, but that's when you can take up your craft again." She explained all of that in a patient tone, knowing the boy wasn't Weyrbred and didn't know how it worked.
"Oh..." Would Y'gel be mad at him? He blinked a bit in confusion.
"A'shel, here's what's going to happen okay? You're going to move into the
barracks and from now on for a long time the Weyrlingmasters will be in charge of you. You will have daily lessons, drills, and a schedule for meals and chores. For the first few months, your dragonet's care will
dominate much of that." She remembered just how demanding Orlaith had been and it made her grin.
The boy nodded, feeling overwhelmed as he tried to take it all in.
Beside him his mother hugged him close, feeling the weight of what had
happened to him.
"Listen, for now you need to eat. Spend time with your mother. Then I'd
suggest heading to the barracks to sleep. You'll be up early from now on."
She knew that much. If the weyrlingmasters didn't wake them, the dragonets
would.
"Okay..." he looked at his mother, more than a bit lost. Except for
the time when he was at the Weyr and she wasn't, he'd never spent the
night away from the same home as her.
"And don't worry..." She thought she read the worry in his eyes. "From now on, you will *never* be alone. Himarth will be there. Always." Rhosyn
stepped forward and ruffled the boy's hair. "I have to go and get in there since it is my feast, but eat."
The boy nodded and watched her walked into the crowd. The weight of
his new life was pressing on him.
