"Sorry! Sorry," Honalyse called breathlessly as she reached the
bridge and the waiting greenrider. "Did Sipkath pass on my message? I
am so sorry I was late. I was trying to get rid of this brown rider
and he just wasn't taking the hint, but then got really persuasive
and... well you know."
"She did, for once" Maloni replied with a cheerful laugh, throwing her
arms around her friend in greeting. "Was he any good at least?" she
asked as she squeezed the other greenrider in a hug. "The brown rider,
I mean. Do I know him?" Maloni loved a fresh bit of gossip and she
always adored her friend for providing her with the latest in's and
out's on the men of their Weyr.
"Oh, maybe..." Honalyse said with a mysterious smile, taking her
friends arm as she steered her towards the shops set up by the
crafters down by the harbor. "And let's just say I'm not going to be
trying on new shoes today. I think my toes are _still_ curled."
A giggled escaped Maloni as they made way for the shops. "Will you be
seeing him again?" she prodded curiously. Maloni wasn't usually a bed
hopper, except for flight situations, obviously, but she secretly
admired her friend for all her experience in that department. She
could only hope she'd be interesting enough for the guy finally did
want to share her bed with on a regular basis. For as far as she could
see, Honalyse would never have that problem.
"Oh, for sure! Yeah, we'll be seeing a lot of each other in the
future." Honalyse shrugged slightly, trying to sound more certain
than she felt. "Well, we'll see each other when we can, maybe. You
know, these things can be complicated sometimes..."
"Yeah, I know," Maloni said, nodding as if she understood it
completely, even if she didn't. "But if he was that interested in you,
I'm sure you can figure it out together," she continued, offering her
friend an encouraging smile. "You know, a new bluerider moved into the
Weyr next to mine. Didn't you see him on your way in last time you
visited?" Maloni had been developing a little crush on the man and
this seemed as good a time as any to ask her world-wise friend for
some advice.
Honalyse wasn't even listening. "All right! Fine! It was Selail's
Weyrmate K'rak, ok? Yes, I know I shouldn't have done it, but what
was I supposed to do?"
"Hon! You didn't!" Maloni squealed, ignoring the slight pang of
irritation as Honalyse didn't take the bait to talk about her new
crush. "Did he.. like, come on to you? When? Where?" Even though
Maloni did want to talk about her problems, she would be quick to
agree that Honalyse's were bigger, even if she brought them upon
herself.
"Well, he just showed up at my room last night... All right, I heard
that Selail would be vising her family over night and I invited him
over," she amended, "_but_, he came on to _me_. I just wanted to talk
to him about old times and what not, and... Ok, yes, I know, I've
always flirted with him when Selail wasn't around, but I didn't _mean_
anything by it! Well, I didn't mean that I wanted to _sleep_ with him
at least..." Again, Honalyse stopped herself. "I mean I let him know
I was never _opposed_ to the idea, but I thought he and Selail were,
you know, _exclusive_..."
"Well, _obviously_ they're not," Maloni said, ready to stick by her
friend no matter what. "I mean, if they were, he wouldn't have slept
with you. Or if they were and he did, it is hardly your fault." Maloni
stopped walking and looked at her friend as if something had just
dawned on her. "You know, I did hear they had a fight a few days back.
Do you think it was about.. I don't know... you?"
"Oh, no," Honalyse said with a wave, already dismissing that idea.
"They fought about her going to her family's place over night. He
didn't want her to go since she was canceling some plan they had by
leaving. And they _are_ exclusive. That's why we didn't actually
_do_ it." Considering she had told her friend that they had spent the
night together, she felt the need to explain. "See we were sitting on
the sofa and my hand just happened to rest on his thigh, and then
suddenly he takes my hand, pulls it up towards, _you_ know, and then
asked me if I could do him a 'favor'. So I did. Then he did me a
'favor'. And we just did, you know, 'favors'... half the night...
And then this morning..." Here Honalyse actually blushed a little.
"Well, this morning he wanted to do it, so we did it, but that was the
_only_ time, I swear!"
"Oh, Hon," Maloni said, trying her best to think this through. "What
did he say about it himself? What do you think it meant to him?"
Maloni would be amongst the first to say her friend deserved to be
loved more than Selail did, but she did know cheating was wrong.
However, if true love was involved, no one was to blame, right? If
Honalyse and K'rak were soul mates.. they really couldn't help falling
into each others arms.
"Well, he just wants to keep it casual, and he definitely doesn't want
Selail to know anything. He told me not to tell anyone what we did,
but you know, I figure it's ok if I tell you." It wasn't as if she
was going to tell _everyone_! "And he said maybe sometime if his
weyrmate is on sweepriders and he's free he might try to track me down
for something quick..." Honalyse shrugged, as if it didn't really
matter. "It's just for fun, I guess. I mean, who knows, maybe in
time... I mean, how happy can he be in the relationship if he's going
to look for me sometimes, right? I mean, he must like being with
me..."
"Yes, of course he does," Maloni nodded, then poked her friend in the
side playfully. "You're pretty awesome." She paused for a moment,
looking at her friend seriously. "But don't let him get you into
anything you don't want, alright? You deserve only the best, he should
know that." It was something her mother used to say to her and Maloni
loved to use the phrase every now and then. It made her feel wise.
Honalyse took hope in her words. "You mean, he could be the one?"
"He could be," Maloni nodded. "But if he is, that means he's not the
one for Selail, if you get what I mean?" The greenrider looked at her
friend seriously.
"Well, that can't be helped, right? I mean, if that's how it is..."
Honalyse was always ready to accept reality in other people's lives.
It was her own that always seemed a step off into fantasy.
"Well if that's how it is, then he's not the one," Maloni said in a
rare moment of clarity. "I mean, how can he be the one if he's with
someone else all the time? That's not even a relationship..." Maloni
looked at her friend sympathetically.
"No no no," her friend tried to quickly correct her. "I mean if
_Selial_ isn't the one, it can't be helped, you know?" Honalyse liked
the idea that she might be 'the one' for someone, and K'rak was as
good as anyone else! She didn't want to give up the idea so quickly.
"Oooh.. that way!" Maloni said, easily swayed as she picked up her
pace towards the shops again. "Well, yes, if she's not the one for
K'rak, he won't do her any favors by staying with her, you know? It
will only end in heartbreak." That the heartbreak might be caused by
her own friend more than anything else, didn't ring through to Maloni.
"Exactly! It's inevitable. And K'rak deserves to be happy as much as
Selial does." And frankly, so did Honalyse, in her own humble
opinion. "Now, tell me, does the bluerider who moved in right next to
you like girls, cause he's kind of hot!"
"Yes, he does, and so do you!" Maloni said with a smile as she dragged
her friend in the direction of a tailor she knew to have the most
gorgeous clothes. When the topic finally turned to her new neighbour,
Maloni's stomach fluttered. "Yeah, I do think he is into girls. I
mean, the look he gave me when I ran in to him in the hallway the
other day... sweet Faranth!"
"Well, you better make a move fast or someone just might snatch him
up," Honalyse said giving her friends arm a squeeze as she lead him
into the shop.
