The new weyrling finally made his way to the party, after reassuring the
stunning little bronze that had chosen him out of all the boys that he would
return soon. The bronze had protested a little, but sleep had won out and
the yawn he had given had led Krizdee, no K'dee as Vatonth had called him
telling the dragon he could see down to the tip of his tail. "I won't be
long," he'd said aloud, still not used to mental communication, maybe his
father could help him there.
N'kriz stood near the entrance to the party with others of the parents
milling around waiting for their newly impressed children. He held
Saladee's hand and craned for a look whenever a new one appeared.
}:Vatonth is drowsing, his should be with you soon:{ Sententh sent and
N'kriz squeezed Saladee's hand. "He should be here soon," he relayed
to her.
"You're squeezing too hard," Saladee protested with a chuckle. Her
heart had been in her throat and tears had filled her eyes when her
son had gotten bronze. She was so proud it almost hurt.
"Krizdee!" they called in unison when they say his dark hair and
gaptoothed grin.
N'kriz stepped forward and slapped his son on the shoulder "Well done
son, well done!"
"Ma! Pa!" The grin on one of River Bluff's newest bronzeriders got wider as
he saw his parents. "Did you see him?"
"We did," exclaimed Saladee.
"He's beautiful," echoed the tall brownrider. "Sententh tells me he's
sleeping?"
"At last, he didn't want me to leave him."
"Well of course," said N'kriz remembering his own impression. Mostly
he remembered joy and fatigue for about the first three months of
Sententh's life. His heart swelled again at the thought **bronze.**
Saladee stepped forward to enfold her son in a mother's fierce hug.
"And what do I call you now besides son?"
"K'dee," came the reply even as he hugged his mother back. "That's what
Vatonth has been calling me."
"K'dee it is then," said N'kriz. The elided honorific sounded good. He
draped a long arm over his son's shoulders and squeezed. "I'm so very
proud of you you and Vatonth. Bronze!" He squeezed again and again in
rapid succession. "Bronze!" He couldn't keep the wonder out of his
voice.
"Are you hungry dear," asked Saladee as she released her son.
"Starving," he said even as he felt his stomach rumble. "Watching Vatonth
eat, I just don't know where he put it all."
"I think all dragonet's are born hollow," said the father with a grin.
"He's going to do nothing but eat and sleep for the moment, isn't he?" K'dee
asked of his father.
N'kriz laughed "Pretty much. It will probably seem that way for
several months, and his meals will only get bigger." Then he directed
them toward where the food was. "Let's get some into you while we
can."
"I don't think I noticed if Deenar or Lakriz impressed."
"I'm sorry honey," said Saladee. She looked at her weyrmate at a bit of a
loss.
"I was hoping one of them would be a weyrling with me."
"They'll find their lifemates. Don't worry, they have plenty of time
to Stand." N'kriz waited for the other two to precede him with plates.
"I know you wanted someone close but really, all your time will be
devoted to Vatonth for the next while."
"I don't doubt that, he's, he's everything to me already."
"Well then," said his mother. "Let's get some food in you before he wakes."
Others gathered round or called out to the new weyrling in
congratulations. N'kriz' chest swelled again with pride. "My son the
bronze rider." He shook his head with a proud smile.
"I don't know if I can get used to that," K'dee said. "A bronze," he shook
his head slightly in disbelief.
N'kriz chuckled and nodded in remembrance of those first few months of
constant work and lack of sleep. "Oh you will."
