M'galec frowned a bit as he scrubbed at his hands and arms. He had not been elbow deep in animal scraps since his own Dwarkanath had been old enough to feed himself. Of course, as a surgeon, and a dragonrider, he was not in the least squimish, but he was sure it was going to be sevendays before he could get all the gunk out from under his fingernails.
Clean now, J'an stood looking over the now empty hatching grounds.
There were fourty three new riders today, a good number he thought.
He went back to his office, knowing he needed to make notes on those who had impressed. }:Al, can you as Dwarkanath's to join me as soon as he is free?:{ he asked of his bronze.
M'galec was still picking at his fingernails as he sat down on the chair across from the Weyrlingmaster. He was tired enough from directing the new weyrlings that he didn't even regret missing the beginning of the festivities. "Congratulations, J'an, on a successful Hatching."
"Congratulations to you on the organising, you did a fine job there,"
replied J'an. The weyrlingmaster put his hides to one side, having finally finished the list of the new pairs. "It looks like a fine group here."
"They do seem so," his second nodded. "I was rather surprised that little impish boy Impressed a bronze. What is his name?"
"Izaronin, or rather it was, I'm not sure what he has chosen to call himself now."
M'galec nodded. It was hard to tell with long names just what they would do with them. "He's a bit young, if I'm not mistaken."
"Fourteen turns I believe. But he has time to grow into his responsibilities. Impressing bronze could be the making of that young man, if I'm not mistaken."
"Of course I do not doubt the bronzes choice," M'galec said with a slight wave of his fingers. "I was merely commenting is all. Did the boy Bayadrin Impress?"
"A good looking brown," replied J'an.
"Ah. I'm glad to hear it," his second said with a small smile. "He seems to have not had an easy life. I think he will make a fine rider, though."
"I'm sure he will," replied J'an. "What do you thing of youg T'kala, the lad that impressed the blue?"
M'galec tried to remember all the faces of the candidates. The name sounded familiar. "He's that tanner's boy?"
"That's the one, dark haired lad. Turns sixteen in a couple of months."
"Ah, yes. I remember him. Good lad. He has a fine head on his shoulders." M'galec remembered he had been impressed with the boys forward thinking.
"I was glad to see Marza impress," remarked J'an.
His second smiled as he recalled the blissful smile on the girls face as she walked her little lifemate off the sands. Dwarkanath seemed impressed with the pairing. "How did her grandmother take the news? I seem to remember she had some reservations."
"I haven't spoken to Arima yet, but I'm sure she'll come to see that it's good for the girl, she has riding in her blood."
"The girls mother was a rider, was she not?"
J'an nodded, "And her grandfather too."
"Very good. I'm sure she'll do well then." He peeked over at the list of names. "Who else impressed?"
"Sounji," replied J'an. "A very pretty little green."
"Ah, yes, I think I saw they walking off the sands. He had quite a smile on his face."
"And lets hope it stays there."
"I'm sure it will. Soujin, or however we are to call him now, seemed to be a level headed fellow the time we spoke." M'galec leaned back into the chair with a sigh. "Forty-three new Weyrlings... It will be a challenge."
"And hopefully as many again soon," pointed out J'an.
"Yes," M'galec nodded, remembering that Lenala's gold was ready to clutch soon. "We shall have our hands full, J'an."
"In the best way."
"Indeed. Well," his Second smiled as he pulled himself up from the chair, "shall we join our new recruits in celebration?"
J'an nodded as he too got to his feet. Now was the time to celebrate.
