Pop the Cork

Writers: AL, Chelle
Date Posted: 22nd November 2011

Characters: Rhosyn, J'ren
Description: Rhosyn and J'ren share a bottle and chat about the Weyr.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 5, day 10 of Turn 6

J'ren had saved a particularly nice bottle of wine for the occasion.
The problem was, he didn't have any particular to share it with. Or
did he? Surely the Weyrwoman would appreciate a fine vintage - and it
was the end of the day. So without hesitation, the bronzerider made
his way to her office and rapped upon the door.

"Who's there?" she asked easily as she finished with the last Record
she had planned to get done that day.

"It's J'ren." Once she spoke, the bronzerider opened the door, then
lifted the wine bottle and glasses he'd brought so Rhosyn could get a
good look at it. "I need some help with this. Know anyone who might be
interested?"

She focused her eyes on him and what he was holding. Deciding it
couldn't harm anything and she was tired and needed a drink, she
nodded. "Come in, Wingsecond. Pop the cork. And tell me what you've
been doing."

>From his pouch, J'ren pulled out a bottle opener he had tucked in there
before making his way to meet the Weyrwoman. He inserted it, then
poured a glass for both of them. "Truthfully? Not much. The usual,
occasionally visiting friends and family elsewhere, but my life is
pretty boring." He took one of the glasses and held it out to Rhosyn.

She took it and drank before sitting back and wiping her mouth. "Eh
well, you almost ended up Weyrleader cept there with that last bit. So
count your blessings." She didn't remember much from the flight, but
Rhosyn had felt that pull before she'd been jerked.

"I suppose I should. Though, I can't say I wouldn't have minded too
much now that there's finally a sensible Weyrwoman here." J'ren hadn't
been too fond of Zharesti - but then, not many people had, and those
who were generally kept quiet now that she was gone.

"Some days I'm sensible, other days I'm too wild," she shrugged, not
minding it a bit. "In the end, though, I do my duty so hopefully that's
good enough."

"There's a difference between wildness and doing one's duty," River
Bluff had certainly had its share of women with a wild streak and
Rhosyn certainly wasn't the wildest he'd ever met, "And being
overbearing and tyrannical. You do your duty and you do it well.
Ignore those who say otherwise."

"I'm pretty sure I tend to do that." Reaching around for her secret
stash, she came up with a wheel of cheese. Slicing it with her belt
knife, she gave him a piece before popping some into her mouth. "So
how's U'das holding up?"

"He's well." J'ren eyed the cheese, mouth ticking up. "Do you
always keep that about?" He asked, accepting the cheese and tearing
off a bite. "I should keep more snacks in my weyr. Maybe the
kitchen workers would be happier with fewer late night trips down
there."

"Well not always that, but something. Saves Solieira and anyway I'd
likely starve before meals if I didn't." She shrugged, not about to
defend her appetite.

"I've been accused of having a bottomless pit for a stomach." J'ren
chuckled, hearing the voices of his accusers, and polished off the last
of the cheese he'd been given.

"So, I hear you've been doing some traveling lately." Not that all
riders didn't take advantage of /betweening/, but Rhosyn had heard
rumors and wondered if they were true.

"Here and there, but nothing particularly exotic." J'ren thought maybe
he should take a trip up North soon - such trips were always a nice
change of pace. "Where's your favourite place to travel?"

Dolphin Cove would be too obvious, so she didn't bother. "Honestly,
I really like Keroon. It reminds me of my place growing up. Topaz
Seahold is pretty though."

"Topaz is nice. I rather like Jade Harbour for its variety, but I
enjoy going up North. Of course, Emerald Falls' waterfall is quite
nice to visit as well." Though he hadn't been there in a while - J'ren
thought he should remedy that.

"Aye..take care, bronzerider. If you keep bothering certain promised
young holders you might end up with problems you don't need." She
didn't know everything, but Rhosyn did find out about some things.

J'ren arched an eyebrow. "I'm not bothering her. We're friends and
she doesn't get much time out of the hold. Besides, I enjoy her
children too."

"I was a holder once. I know how that works. You may not see it as
bothering, but someone might." She put a hand on his chest, hoping
he understood. She didn't want to have to play politics with Emerald
Falls' Lord Holder over a stupid Wingsecond.

"I have no plans to cause any trouble," J'ren assured his goldrider.
"And she's not the only one I go to see when I'm there. I have other
friends at Emerald Falls as well."

"Mmm....I've never been there that I remember." She dismissed the
place, thinking of other things. "Well I think we've been lazy enough.
Should probably get back to work and do something. Oh right, terrorize
my wingriders with physical therapy!" A certain gleam came into her eye.

"Ah well. It was nice having a chat and a break with you." J'ren rose
and corked what was left of the bottle. "Physical therapy...it's good
for them." He winked and turned, leaving the bottle for her to finish
if she desired.
