W'ser was lost in thought as he stood over a basin, his hands moving
methodically as he washed ichor off of his hands and forearms. A wound
that had been haphazardly sewn by a young journeyman had reopened and
it had been W'ser's duty to treat the wound and properly stitch it
this time. Of course, W'ser had made the journeyman attend and take
close notes on how it _should_ be done.
}:It was in a tough spot.:{ Branth reasoned.
**Still, that's no reason to be clumsy.** W'ser pointed out, having
little to no slack for mistakes when it came to dragons. The wound
_was_ in a precarious place that made it hard to reach but W'ser felt
that if _he_ could do it, a journeyman could learn to do it as well.
Luckily the dragon had been good-natured about it, as had his rider.
}:You have a meeting with P'nal.:{ Branth reminded him, breaking him
out of his reverie.
Realizing that he'd been standing over the basin washing his hands for
far too long, W'ser quickly dried them off and then made hastily for
his office where he could meet up with P'nal to discuss some of the
injured dragons in his Wing.
The brownrider was already waiting, but he didn't care too much. He knew
the Master Dragonhealer had plenty to do and taking care of the Weyr's dragons
was important work. He looked down at his list as W'ser walked in. "Afternoon,
Master."
"My apologies, P'nal, I had a last minute wound to tend to before I
met with you." W'ser explained as he rounded his desk and took his
seat behind it. For the briefest moment W'ser allowed himself the
enjoyment of relaxing in his chair, but it lasted for only a second
before he pulled a ledger out of his top drawer, "Allright then, shall
we?"
"Aye then. How many will we get back and how many are still on the
injured list or in the queens' wing?" He took out his own list, ready to
update it.
W'ser exhaled a little as he scanned down the ledger, a stylus poised
in hand as he made checks by those leaving, circles by those staying,
and a star by the one joining the Queen's Wing, "Allright then, you've
got one heading into the Queen's Wing, and then there are a couple
who'll still be in the infirmary," he wasn't sure yet _when_ those two
would be able to leave, "and then you've got five returning to the
Wing this month."
"T'bel?" he asked, speaking of the wingrider and dragon that had gotten
hurt during the bad fall where their wingthird had died.
"He's good to go," W'ser was happy to report, "not that he shouldn't
take it easy. He's ready to go back into Threadfall, but I would want
to check afterwards, just to be on the safe side." If anything, W'ser
felt that T'bel probably needed rest from the constant vigil he had
taken up by G'wen's side while the boy had been sick.
"Good then. So what about the Weyr's wings in general? I'll need to
tell G'nir so he knows what strength we are for fall." P'nal tried to help
his Weyrleader as much as he could.
"At the moment the Weyr has about twenty dragons in total that won't
be flying the next Fall. That isn't counting, however, the dragons
that aren't flying because of rider injuries." That was something for
the Weyrhealer to keep up with, W'ser was just concerned with the
dragon, "So we'll still be flying strong into the next Threadfall."
"Mmmm...better then. Even with the dead..." He started to think, but stopped.
Traditionally W'ser flew fall with them when he did fly, but most of the time
the Master was on the ground. Still, he did drill with the Weyrleader's Wing,
which made things interesting.
W'ser nodded where the man trailed off. "We're still flying strong,
but it'll be a relief when the weyrlings graduate and join the
fighting Wings." He spoke plainly, although he already knew that the
Weyrleader and his Wingsecond, P'nal, were quite aware of this.
"Mmmm but we don't know how well they'll do. Usually in a pass the
weyrlings die in the first turn or so of being in a fighting wing. I'd hope
that they'd listen to J'darin but...we'll see." P'nal would wait to reserve
judgment after seeing them fly.
The Weyrdragonhealer nodded his head in agreement with the Wingsecond.
He'd worked personally with the Weyrlings during different lessons on
basic dragonhealing, so he hoped that they retained some of the
invaluable training that they were receiving from their
Weyrlingmasters and elder dragonriders, "I guess we will."
"Well I'll leave you be for now then. Same time next sevenday?" He looked
down at his hides and thought about what he had to do next.
W'ser gave a nod, "Until next sevenday." Hopefully the next sevenday
would bring forth good news about more dragons returning to the Wing
and less being restricted because of injuries.
