Jaylene

Jaylene

"Phew." J'ren pulled himself out of the weyrlake and waded through the
shallow water to the shore where his clothes and a towel awaited him on
a convenient rock. He grabbed the towel and began to rub at his face,
then shook his head, a light spray scattering about at the motion.

Jaylene flicked some water on him from her spot beside the towel. "So
what'd you make of the Hatching over at Dolphin Cove?" She assumed he
was there. She had been too busy to attend. Being a wingthird wasn't
all it was cracked up to be.

"Hey now, I'm trying to get _dry_." The annoyance in J'ren's voice was
feigned and the chuckle merely broke down any pretense at all. "It was
fun. I took a woman I met at Emerald falls - Lisadi - and she seemed
to enjoy herself."

"You've been hanging out at Emerald Falls? Isn't that Dolphin Cove's
territory?" She gave him a quizzical look, wondering how or why a
rider from River's Buff would want to go to that place.

"Yes, it is, but I know people there." J'ren lowered down onto the
rock, then leaned back on his elbows. "She's a sweet woman. Met her
while I was wandering around."

Jaylene snorted at the mental picture of a bronze rider aimlessly
wandering about in a Hold. "I'm sure the Lord Holder must have loved
that one."

"I don't know. I didn't see the Lord Holder." J'ren chuckled. "Why
does it matter? It's not like dragonriders don't come to holds from
time to time and I'm not a Weyrleader, or even a Weyrleader second."

"No, you're crazy U'das' second." She wrinkled her nose up at that.

"Crazy Udas?" J'ren peered at her from his position on the rock.
"What do you mean?"

"Fun. Nuts. Goofy. That sort of thing. He's one of my best mate's
uncle, so I see him quite a lot. His bronze is always flirting with
Reanth." She nodded to the small green, who was cleaning her talons
and her sea green hide.

"Ah, the good kind of crazy. Hard to tell sometimes." J'ren winked
over at Jaylene. "Hey, I thought you liked it when dragons flirted
with yours."

"Hmm.." was all she was going to say on that matter. Actually, unlike
her, Reanth really didn't like being flirted with, being shy by
nature.

"What?" J'ren asked, eyeing Jaylene.

"Hmm!" she said louder. "Did you get it that time?" Her smile was
teasing.

J'ren rolled his eyes. "_Why_ did you go 'hmm'?"

"Because it's not Reanth who likes cute guys noticing her..."

"Are you saying you like cute guys noticing you?" J'ren queried with a
quirk of his lips.

"What girl doesn't...?" Jaylene ducked her head down, feeling
unusually vulnerable. It seemed lately that not too many men were
noticing her.

"Kind of hard _not_ to notice you, Jay." J'ren pointed out with a soft
chuckle. "I'm sure plenty of guys do."

"They used to, it's all dried up since K'sedel made me his wingthird."
She shrugged her shoulders and inwardly sighed. "And it doesn't help
that any bluerider around is going to fall head over heels for J'zen
rather than me."

"Depends on the bluerider. Some prefer women over men." J'ren
reminded her. "And just give it some time. I'm sure you still turn
heads, they're just a little more discreet about it since you now hold
rank."

"Men...you're all so odd!" She wrinkled her nose and splashed some
water on him.

"Men would argue that it's the women who are odd!" J'ren laughed and
ignored the spray of water. "Is there a specific man you're
interested? Maybe you should let him know."

Jaylene ducked her head down. There wasn't any particular man, she
just wanted to know she was still desirable. Changing the subject,
she asked, "so are you going to see that Holder woman again?"

"Probably." She was sweet, and J'ren liked sweet. Of course, he also
liked sassy. In general, he just liked women. "She's got some cute
kids."

Jaylene dropped her head down, a bit lost in her thoughts. "J'zen's
desperate for a little niece or nephew." She grinned, thinking of her
brother's not so subtle hints to her.

"You could always try to have one with someone." J'ren suggested. He'd
heard of some dragonriders doing that, though he wanted to have a
partner rather than just someone to birth a child of his.

Her head snapped back up at that. "_I_don't want one, J'zen does! He
just needs to get a weyrmate with a child is all, and leave me and
Jayonne alone!"

J'ren chuckled. "Well, it could happen." The reaction on the
greenrider's part amused him. "I should probably be getting back, but
I'll see you around?"

"Yeah, you behave yourself!" She gave him a farewell splash.
