Characters: K'mai, Rhosyn
Description: Rhosyn and K'mai talk about flights, leadership, and power.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 3, day 9 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: U'das, Solieira
Orlaith had flown, the flight had been successful, and now Rhosyn
could rest on her laurels for a bit. She was still completing her duties
for as long as her dragon could fly but once Orlaith was grounded,
she would be giving up a bit of her control. It allowed her to focus
more on the injured and the candidates for a time, which she liked.
Walking through the Weyr, she found herself gravitating toward the
storage cellar where she knew the wine was. Deciding she was thirsty
and she could use a tiny celebration, she walked inside and carefully
selected a wineskin. Besides the Headwoman and a few others, she was
the only one that had keys to this particular lock. Smiling, she headed
out with her prize.
K'mai came around the corner and quickly stuffed the key into his
pocket. He didn't know how she would react if she saw him with one.
"Good day, Weyrwoman."
"Hello, bluerider," she thought for a moment. "What brings you down
here?" Her eyes narrowed slightly as her mind worked.
"Looking for a friend of mine, who has apparently not come down this
way." He smiled. "I see you've come to pick up some wine. What's the
occasion?"
"Successful mating flight of course. Looking forward to the eggs, but I thought I'd just give myself a bit of a pat on the back for once, you know." Rhosyn was ready for this time when all she had to do was wait.
"Ah, yes. We all need to treat ourselves once in a while.
Congratulations on the flight, Weyrwoman."
"Thank you. Care to join me?" She was feeling in the festive mood. After being such a pain, she could relax now without all the hormones flowing.
His smile widened. "I would be honored."
"Come along then, I'm thirsty." Almost bouncing through the tunnels, she led him to her weyr. "So this is where I live." They came inside to the small sitting room where she promptly produced two glasses and a corkscrew.
"Do the honors?"
He gave her a nod that was almost a little bow and opened the
wineskin. "I haven't been in the Weyrwoman's weyr before."
"Well, it's a normal weyr, but bigger and I have a sitting room, a bathing
chamber, and the Records Room attached. Other than that, normal." She
shrugged, waiting for him to pour.
"It's still nice to finally see it." He glanced around, admiring how
spacious it was. K'mai poured a glass and handed it to Rhosyn. "And
with such a lovely occupant."
"Thanks. You can look around if you want." She had populated the place with
comfortable furnishings, though one could see the bedfurs, wall coverings, and those sorts of things were of a higher caliber than most. Drinking her wine, she settled herself into a chair.
K'mai spent a moment walking around the space, looking at the
decorations and furnishings. Then he sat in a chair facing her. "Do
you like being Weyrwoman?"
"Most of the time, yes," she answered honestly, surveying the bluerider.
"Hmm, all that responsibility," he mused. "I wouldn't like it."
"Well, it's better this way. I get to make my own rules and I don't have
someone telling me what they want me to do." She'd had such a hard time
with that at her old Weyr.
"Ah, I see. I don't always like being told what to do, but I would
like giving orders even less." K'mai sipped his wine.
"Why's that?" she queried curiously as she poured herself another glass.
The bluerider shrugged. "I'm just not the leader type."
"Well everyone can't be in charge. If we didn't have a few strong
backs to sit on, we'd all fall down." Rhosyn's idiom didn't make much
sense once she thought about it. Shrugging, she put the wine aside.
"So what do you think of your Wingleader, K'mai?"
"U'das? I like him. He's sturdy and he isn't all self important like
some bronzeriders can be. He was a good Weyrleader, too." It was a
shame his bronze's injury made him step down, although he was healed
enough to lead 'Fall now. K'mai wondered if he'd win the leadership
again.
"He's good to talk to sometimes. When I need advice, I ask him."
He didn't judge her and he was easy to talk to. The rest of them,
she didn't have that level of comfort with for a few different reasons.
"It's always good to have someone like that around."
"Yeah. Where did you come from?" A lot of people here were from different
places and it was interesting to learn.
"Born and raised right here, and I have no desire to leave." He sipped
at his almost empty wine glass.
"Well good." She moved to refill his glass, then brought herself back to her seat. Rhosyn liked simple conversation when she could be comfortable.
"We need all the help we can get."
"And I'm happy to do my part. Of course I wish this _wasn't_ a Pass,
but since it is I'll do my duty." He lifted his glass slightly before
taking a drink.
"Mmm...it is what it is and it's all we can do." She gave K'mai the rest of
the skin and settled. "That's what dragons are for."
