Description: Birigundi and Hanni seek a little comfort after the death of the
Werywoman
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 9, day 6 of Turn 3
The day had been a hard one for everyone. The dragons were upset.
Rumors were flying everywhere. The one thing that was true beyond a shadow of a doubt was the Weyrwoman and her queen was dead. This was news that effected _everyone_ in the Weyr, from the Weyrleader down to the youngest drudge. Birigundi was no exception. He had met Jaela several times when she had come to talk to the candidates. The Weyrwoman had always seemed... more than human. It was unfathomable for him to think that she had been suseptable to frailty same as any other woman. And now there were no more golds of age at Dragonsfall... What would happen now?
Birigundi was tired of the questions. Tired of the grief and the silence. He need something to make him feel better. He needed Hanni.
Standing outside the greenrider's weyr, he hoped she had not already found someone for the evening.
"Biri?" she said as she opened the door. The young greenrider was in shock, whilst not really having know the Weyrwoman beyond that one brief interview when she had asked to be considered as a candidate, the death of any dragon upset all the riders. Samdrath had lifted her head and keened with the rest of the dragons, her distress being communicated to her rider, who had burst into tears as well.
He noticed the glazed expression in her eyes. Shards but he felt like a selfish fool. Here he had been thinking only of relieving his own distress. He had not even given a thought to how the rider would be feeling, under the pressure of her own grief as well as that of her green. Birigundi reached out for the young woman and pulled her to him.
"Are you okay?" she asked after a moment, seeking comfort from being held. There was something about the contact with another that made things easier, easier to bear for the moment.
Things were just so heavy, and Birigundi hated all the grieving faces, the sounds of sniffles and tears. But how could he think of himself at that moment? "I'm fine. How are you copping?"
"Better now that you are here." She held him close for a moment, "Samdrath was so upset, I'd never seen her like that before."
"It seems as if Pern is turning backwards today," he said as he ran his fingers through her hair. "Who knows what will happen next. How the Weyrleader must be suffering tonight."
"I hope he's not alone," she looked up at him. "You won't leave me alone tonight, will you?"
"Of course not," he replied emphatically. He would not be doomed to face the night alone, not with a whole barracks full of candidates whispering and worrying. "I don't want to leave. There is nothing out there but... uneasiness and grief."
"Not here," she said drawing him into her weyr. "Not tonight, I need company." A gentle kiss was placed upon his cheek. "Stay with me tonight?"
That's what Birigundi had hoped for. It was his favorite escape from the sad things in life. He took her face in his hands and kissed her gently. "Yes."
She led him to the bed, holding his hand for comfort. Tonight would be about just that, making sure that they were not alone.
