A Little Shove

Writers: Miriah, Chelle
Date Posted: 10th May 2013

Characters: Rhosyn, Jitarim
Description: Bahji's father comes to see the Weyrwoman.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 1, day 20 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Bahji; Follows Making a Difficult Choice

He had never felt so out of place and the elderly fisherman approached
the Weyrwoman's office with a mixture of dread and awe. Twisting his
homespun scarf in his hand, he knocked on the door and took a deep breath.

She was back in the saddle, though not feeling entirely normal just yet.
Still, Rhosyn had a handle on her hidework and she found herself not being
quite as tired. Then again, she was eating more to try and keep her energy
up. "Aye?" Wondering who that was, she scarfed down a cookie.

Nervously, Jitarim stepped into the office and looked around, swallowing.
"Excuse me, Weyrwoman. I apologize for disturbing you." He took a deep
breath, winding his scarf more tightly in his hands. "But it's important.
My name is Jitarim. I'm hoping you can help me, if you can."

"Jitarim....you're not one of my folk. Please sit and tell me your
troubles." **Don't mind me** She sipped from a glass of juice as she
looked at his knots and wondered why this man had come to see her.

"No, Weyrwoman, I'm not. I just didn't know who else to ask that could
help." Sitting down, Jitarim looked at the Weyrwoman and tried to
figure out where to begin. "It's my daughter, see. She's here, with
the weavers to learn a trade." His scarf twisted in his hands. "But we
need her home now. Bahji, well, she's blind, Weyrwoman. A good girl,
and strong, but we never thought she'd be able to do much at home.
Thought she'd be better off here. But, there's a man, see, that's offered
to take her on now. She can be a wife and a mother and do what she ought.
She can come home to her family. " He swallowed. "We have it all arranged
but we need her sent home."

"Does she want to go home?" It was a simple question and the first
thing that came to mind. Of course, this was also why most holders
didn't send their daughters to the Weyr, instead fostering them in other
Holds. The Weyr usually didn't give them back.

"She says not, but Weyrwoman, what need does the Weyr have for a blind
girl? She can't do much. She's a good girl, mind, and never causes a lick
of problem, but she can't Impress. Why, there's a man now that will wed
her, even after being here. She's a pretty thing and she's young. She'll
have a much better life at home now."

"We have many girls here that never Impressed. You say she is a
weaver, then there is something she can do that will be sufficient if she
wishes to stay." Of course Rhosyn also didn't mention the girl could
easily breed future candidates for the Weyr, blind or not. She'd seen her
handiwork though and she knew Bahji was useful. "To be honest, though, sir-it
is her choice. As Weyrleaders we will not send anyone away if they do not
wish to go as long as there is a place for them."

"She's not really a weaver, Weyrwoman. She just does it." Jitarim huffed a
sigh. "She can't apprentice, but she can weave nets at home and be
useful..." His voice trailed off as he stared at Rhosyn. "Can't you convince
her to come home? You're the Weyrwoman. Surely you've got to realize
she's better off with a husband and her family."

"Ah but she can have a family here if she wishes. Either way, it's up
to her." Rhosyn sat back from her seat and considered the situation at hand.
Deciding it would be better to hear from the girl herself, she put up a finger. "I
imagine you must be hungry after your journey, Jitarim. Please go to our
Dining Cavern and have a meal. In the meantime, I will speak to your daughter myself and
then we can all come to a decision I'm sure."
