One of the journeymen healers stopped him from running in the
infirmary and led him to Meledei's cot, calming him by letting him
know her injury wasn't severe. Z'ku stepped into the curtained area
and breathed a sigh of relief at seeing her. "I came as soon as I
could."
First one eye opened and peered up at the young man and then the other
and she gave him a small smile. She was drugged and had been asleep,
but it was starting to wear off and she had already been struggling out
of the slumber, the pain seeping in through it. "Hey Z'ku."
He went to her side and lifted his hand, then dropped it. He was
afraid to touch her, worried that he would somehow hurt her. "Queens
are supposed to be safer."
"No one is ever completely safe from Threadfall when a dragonrider."
Meledei pointed out. She forced back a yawn and wished her head were
clearer. A lot of people had visited just since Fall. How late was it?
She'd lost track of time. "We're there to keep others safe."
"And _we're_ there to keep _you_ safe." His wing had been over too far
for him to even consider blaming himself, but he meant the other wings
in general.
"Z'ku, these things happen." Meledei shook her head a little and tried
to smile. "Thread gets through occasionally. That's why we have the
flamethrowers. It's not the end of the world."
"I know." He took her hand. "You're still alive." The moment of panic
when he'd first heard she was hit had been terrible.
Meledei's hand gently squeezed his. "Plan on staying that way for a
long time yet. It's not _that_ bad."
"That's good, although I'm sure it feels bad enough." He knew that
very likely it would be him lying there someday. Every rider got
Scored eventually.
"It'll heal and then I'll be back up in the sky with the rest of you."
And hopefully it wouldn't be too long. Meledei didn't particularly
_like_ flying Thread, but it was necessary, and she hated the idea that
they were down one rider because of her injury.
"I'm so glad it wasn't worse." He squeezed her hand. "I don't know
what I'd do if I lost you."
"Well unfortunately for you, you're going to have to put up with me for
a while yet." Meledei joked. She had every intention of living past
Threadfall, to see the day the Pass ended.
Z'ku smiled. "I hope I have to put up with you forever."
