Description: Jaylene catches the Weyrwoman at a bad time, much to her amusement.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 2, day 27 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: K'sedel, N'vanik
She frowned as she went over the list of injured and those that she was
sending back to the wings. Rhosyn had already had to adjust drills once
and it seemed like she had more slow riders than anything else. She understood
flying low for Orlaith's safety, but she was a fighter at heart.
"Stupid, stupid, stupid..." she muttered.
"Huh? What's stupid?" Jaylene looked up from her own thoughts and
charts of rider formations. When she saw it was Rhosyn who had spoken
she smiled a warm greeting.
"Nothing...I just...it's frustrating sometimes, but it's my duty so I do it."
She wouldn't change Orlaith for the world, but it would be interesting to
ride a fighting dragon just once-to know how it was.
The much taller woman arched an eyebrow, not quite understanding
Rhosyn's frustrations. "Your duty? Do you need a break? I can take
over, if you wish."
"No, I'm fine," she said quickly. Being used to working with Lenala and praying
that she could get a replacement for her someday, Rhosyn didn't trust other
women monkeying around with her wing business. "It's just a bummer that I'll
always be on the bottom. _Always_."
"Well then, roll that N'vanik over and get on top, girl." Jaylene
grinned and winked at the goldrider. She knew that's not what the
Weyrwoman meant but everyone, even Rhosyn, needed to be teased once in
awhile.
Her head came up quickly. She knew there were rumors and her recent actions
were enough so that everyone probably knew, but this was the first time she
had been confronted with it. "Excuse me?"
Jaylene just gave her a 'don't play stupid' look before turning back to her own
papers.
"No, I meant..I'll never have the experience of knowing what it is to ride a
fighting dragon in fall. I can do the maneuvers a bronze can do, but I can't
ever be up there with the rest of you." She sat back and looked back up at
the sky. "I understand why and I accept it, but.."
"Well you_can_always play the fool and feed your queen firestone..."
Jaylene cocked her head at Rhosyn before looking out at some of the
bronzes. "Trust me, being on 'top' isn't always what it's cracked up
to be."
"Pft even if I did that, which I never would because that would be stupidity,
it still would never work. The whole reason she's on bottom is because of the
draconic instinct to protect her. With her on top, it would be chaos." Rhosyn
considered what Jaylene was saying and shrugged. "Everything has its challenges
and its rewards. I see the end result of what you all do. Just once,
I'd like to be a part of it I think."
To that Jaylene snorted. "You_are_part of it. Excuse me, but who
keeps the last threads from hitting the ground that us dopes way up
high in the sky don't get to?" Her tone was good natured.
"Usually, but ground crews are there for a reason. Still, we've greatly
improved things since I got here on all fronts. Lately though I've got more
injured than anything else. I like sending those able back to the wings but.."
She frowned, considering the situation.
Jay raised an eyebrow. "But what...?"
"But there's not much you can do when the whole wing is being propped up
by about five healthy riders," she finished succinctly. Such was her unique
position as a Wingleader.
Jaylene raised her other eyebrow. How soon was Orlaith due to Rise?
"Okay then, if you want to have a whinge..." She gazed back down on
her own records.
She got up quickly. Rhosyn didn't whine and she certainly didn't put up with
greenriders who thought she did. Grabbing her things, she headed straight out
of the room, just hoping the next person she came upon said something stupid.
Jaylene snorted and laughed under her breath. Maybe she should warn
K'sedel that there was a proddy Weyrwoman on the prowl?
