Rialine knocked softly on the door. "Hello, Miryene? Are you up for some company?" Rialine wasn't exactly what else to say. As Rialine had been settling into the hall her father had suggested a visit with Miryene, one of the hall ladies. Rialine didn't quite know what was going on Miryene, but she didn't mind visiting people in spare moments. "I've got some fresh tea."
"Come in, Rialine." Miryene smiled and set her sewing down on her lap, gesturing for Rialine to take a seat. "Your father was just here. He mentioned you might come by."
"Good, then you don't think i'm some scary stranger," Rialine replied sitting down. "Oh wait, I forgot the tea," she said, carefully jumping up again to bring over the mug. "Would you like some?"
"Yes, please." Miryene accepted the mug, wrapping her hands around it with a smile. "Your father told me you like to sew. I'd be happy to have someone to sit with me and sew... I'll never be a seamstress, but I do enjoy it."
"Yes I do! I'm working on a new quilt for our new home now." She frowned as she sat down thought. "I didn't think to bring the stiching with me though. I guess I'll have to come again soon. Can I see what you're working on?"
"A quilt as well, actually..." Miryene held up the nearly finished quilt. "Not a large one though... it's for the baby."
"Ooooooo," Rialine ooed and awwwed as one does over such little things. "And it is so lovely! Your child will be besotted with it I'm sure. Why, I remember my first blanket my mother made for me still. I didn't want to put it down for years. I've since incorporated some of the remainting bits into the patch work I'm doing right now."
"I don't suppose you brought it with you?" Miryene asked hopefully. "I'd love to see it!"
"No, I'm sorry," Rialine sighed. "I promise, next time I won't come empty handed. Sometimes company is nice while sewing, while, other times I feel its a good time to contemplate. You know what I mean? Let your mind wander a bit?"
"I know exactly what you mean," Miryene replied with a gentle smile. "However, I spend enough time alone. I'll take all the companionship I can get right now."
Rialine was a little sad, for Miryene. She wondered how she would take it when she someday became pregnant herself. "Well, you're in a good spot for that, so close to the kitchen's. It must smell so good!"
"Oh, Cinale keeps me well supplied with anything I could want," Miryene replied, pleased at the subject change. Thinking too long on how lonely she was didn't do much for her state of mind.
"That must be nice," Rialine replied, then fell into thought. Her hands fell clasped into her lap. "Miryene, you've been at the hall, for a while right? I'm still so new here, perhaps, are there any interesting stories?"
"Well..." Miryene smiled and lowered her voice. "Have you heard about the Hallmaster and his new wife?"
"Other then," Rialine spoke carefully, "that she is awfully young?"
Miryene laughed. "She is that... but she's got the Hallmaster wrapped around her little finger, from what it sounds like."
"Maybe thats not so bad," she replied quietly, with a quick laugh.
"Well, it's probably a good trait in a wife..." Miryene grinned. "But it's certainly an unusual sight for all of us, who are used to a gruff Hallmaster!"
"You mean, he was even scarier before?" she asked, in a hushed voice.
Miryene nodded, hiding another smile. "A lot scarier."
Rialine hated feeling so new at a place. Her family had been at the Healer Hall, all her life. Here, she seemed out of the loop. "Oh dear! What else have I missed, being such a recent arrival?"
Although Miryene could think of lots of things, there weren't many she felt anxious to share, especially since most of them were about her. "Oh, don't worry. I'll have you caught up on all the Hall gossip in no time!"
