Description: Teseada meets one of the Weyr's newest residents
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 3, day 4 of Turn 6
Notes: Notes: part one of two
For once Onnyth had relaxed enough to let her rider leave the hatching sands
and go and take a meal in the dining cavern with the other residents of the
Weyr. Teseada had thrown on a plain tunic and skirt and made her way up
there. After taking a few moments to see her mother in the kitchens, she
emerged with a tray loaded down with her favourites, rank, she supposed, did
indeed have it's privileges.
As she looked around for an empty seat that she spotted a new face. She did
like to meet new arrivals, but sometimes it got so stuffy and formal. Most
didn't know what to say to her beyond the courtesies, and made the meeting
as brief as possible. This one, she thought, could, and should be
different. So she walked over to the table, and asked. "Is this seat taken?"
"No, not at all." The young man moved his bag off the empty chair and
nodded his head for her to sit down.
"Just arrived?" she said nodding to him as he moved his bag.
"Yes, one of the Headwoman's staff told me to get a quick bite to eat
before they show me where I'll be staying." As he ate, he took in the
girl's plain clothing. "You new too?"
"I've been here a while," she said. "Weyrborn, that's me."
"Really?" He had heard about Weyr-born girls.
"My Father impressed after he and my mother were posted here. I've never
lived anywhere else."
"Whow! Really? Your father's a dragonrider? You're so lucky."
"And a technician, that's why they came here. Ma works in the kitchens here.
She's known for her desserts." Teseada poured herself a drink. "You want
some?"
"Cheers." He held up his cup. "Oh, where are my manner's? the
name's Daran, Journeyman Harper at your service."
"Tes," she said. "Senior apprentice technician, hopefully soon to walk the
tables."
"Nice to meet you, Tes. Pretty name.." He smiled at the young girl
before ducking his head down and finishing his meal.
"Is this your first time at a Weyr?" she asked.
"It is indeed. I come from a small Hold beholden to Vista Point Weyr,
got apprenticed to the Harper Hall when I was 12, and was there until
that fire, and I've been journeying ever since. So despite the Hall
being at Dolphin's Cove now, I've not been there yet." He chuckled
and shook his head. "You'd think I'd be begging to get there, with
all the nice beaches and all!"
"The lake here is very nice during the summer. We have bonfire up there
sometimes and roast tubers."
"That sounds nice." he smiled at her.
"The other sevenday," she began. "My mother made cakes, with lots of fruity
bits in them. They went down well."
"Yeah the cooks here seem to be good." He nodded to his empty plate.
"Better than the last Hold I was stationed at. I think licking out
the runner beasts' stalls would have tasted better than what we were
given to eat!"
"Well I'll let my mother know that you appreciate it."
"Yes, tell her she's a cracking good cook." If tonight's meal was
anything to go by, Daran knew he had landed on his feet, for this
assignment. And the girl he was talking to, she was pretty. And
friendly enough, not at all what he had been told that Weyr girls
could be like.
"She'll be feeding you up if I tell her that!" joked Teseada. "Something
like those hungry weyrling dragons that can't stop eating."
He laughed at the thought of him being like a baby dragon. She had a
nice smile, this Tes girl did. "So...are there any nice places to
walk to, Tes? After I find my home for the next several sevendays,
I'd love to go for a walk and stretch these legs out."
"The lake, but I have to stop by the technicians office first and pick up
some hides. I have some designs to study."
"Does that mean you'll come with me and make sure I don't get lost?" he
teased.
"I think I can manage that."
"So where should we meet?" He sat back and studied her, glad for once
to meet a forward woman, or at least one not afraid to at least go on
a walk with a boy. That made a nice change from the Holder girls.
"How about you give me a candlemark?" she suggested. "It'll give me time to
get those hides and put them away, and you a chance to put those bags
somewhere, and I'll see you in the Weyrbowl."
"That'd be brilliant! See you then." He stood up to leave, having to
get his new bed after all.
"You will," she said.
