She knew the eggs were nearly ready. Angdelouth had already informed
her that the hatching would take place any day now. Messages had been
dispatched letting the holds, halls, and Weyrs know that the time
could happen at any moment.
As Janani sat, brushing out her hair in her weyr, she found herself
wondering who from the other Weyrs would attend. It was customary for
many of the other dragonriders to join in the festivities. Her
thoughts wandered to people from River Bluff whom she knew would
likely come as they'd been her friends there, but what of the others.
Her thoughts slipped back to a time far earlier. Janani recalled
friendships she'd had back at Dragonsfall. She remembered Ullia. She
missed the greenrider she'd befriended early in her time there.
Thoughts of Ullia brought her back to a night she hadn't thought of in
many turns. A night of Ullia's making, but it wasn't Ullia's name on
Janani's lips as she reminisced. Rather it was one name...
U'kaiah.

"Come on, Janani, you _have_ to do this for me. I just can't go there
alone. He'll _expect_ certain things and I don't know if I'm really
ready for that yet." Ulia tugged on her friend's arm. Janani sighed and
looked towards the other rider. "Fine, I'll come." Ulia flung her arms
around Janani and called out a "thanks," even as she hurried off to see
to her own duties.
Heaving a sigh, Janani turned to head in the opposite direction. She'd
just agreed to go on a date with her friend. She felt like a chaperone,
which would not be any fun at all. Maybe she could find someone to go
with her. She wandered aimlessly for a bit into the lower caverns,
snagging a sweet pie in the kitchens before making her way back out to
the bowl.
The sun was shining brightly, but Janani didn't feel nearly so happy.
She had just relegated herself to what could be one of the worst
possible evenings of her life at the Weyr. Who wanted to be a third
wheel anyway? Sighing, she took a bite from her pie before looking
around the bowl.
Her eyes rested on different figures, wondering if she could convince
any of them to sit and keep her company this eve. At least, then, maybe
she wouldn't feel so out of place. Most of those she saw she rejected
immediately. Some had only spoken to her hoping to get into her pants,
while others had all but ignored her thinking her status as goldrider
made her unattainable. True, she hadn't been easy on any of them and was
not about to crawl under the furs with them. But just because she wasn't
as free with her affections as most of the women in the Weyr didn't mean
she didn't deserve good company for the evening.
As she moved across the open area, her eyes stopped on a person she
thought might just be perfect for what she wanted. Moving over to him,
she called out, "U'kaiah?"
The bronzerider had been leaning against the rails of the feeding pen
when he heard his name called. Turning his head to look over his
shoulder, he was surprised to see who had called his name. "Janani?" he
grinned when his eyes rested on the goldrider.
"Bronzerider," she replied with a hint of amusement in her eye at his
reaction. "I was wondering if you happened to be free this evening?"
"Why yes, I think I just might be," he said. Their last meeting was
still fresh in his mind, and he didn't mind spending a bit more time in
her presence.
She breathed a sigh of relief. "Great. I promised a friend I would
accompany her and I honestly didn't want to go alone. How about I meet
you back here around 7?"
Well, it wasn't quite what he expected, but it sounded fun anyway.
"Sure, I'll be here. Should I bring anything? Do I need to dress up?"
"Not necessarily," she replied, "though something a bit different from
the training gear would be best," she actually grinned and winked at
him.
"I'll see you then!" She remarked before turning and heading back across
the bowl.
At the designated time Janani arrived and looked around to see if
U'kaiah had already arrived.
The bronzerider made sure to arrive early, wanting to make as good an
impression as possible. Though she had seemed to imply that this would
be a casual affair, he made sure to visit the bathing pool and scrubbed
himself up, dabbling a bit of scented oils women seemed to like and
putting on a fresh tunic that other women had seemed to appreciate on
him. He stood a little taller ans smiled as she approached.
"Good evening, U'kaiah,"Janani said when she spotted him. "If you're
ready, we can meet my friend. I wanted to thank you for joining me. I
really didn't want to do this on my own, but I had promised Ulia.
He held an arm out for her to take. "It's my pleasure, Janani."
It only took them a moment to meet up with her friend. "Ulia, this is
U'kaiah. U'kaiah, Ulia," She said by way of introduction, wondering if
perhaps the two had met before seeing as how Ulia was a greenrider.
"Come on," Ulia said, "I promised G'lal we wouldn't be late." She
smiled up to U'kaiah. "Nice to formally meet you U'kaiah." Then Ulia
turned and hurried them along to the weyr of G'lal, who was already
waiting for them.
The brownrider opened the door, rather surprised to see _three_
visitors! He had thought it was going to be him and two girls! Just
like U'kaiah to muscle his way in when there was a girl up for grabs, he
thought with an amused shake of his head. "Well, all of you, come on
in."
U'kaiah waited for the ladies passed through first. Before he could
enter the room, G'lal said quietly but firmly, "Listen, Ulia's mine
tonight. Agreed?"
The bronzerider gave his shoulder a pat. "Don't worry, G'lal, I'm here
with Janani. Ulia's safe this time."
"G'lal," Ulia greeted him with a sultry smile.
Janani, too, greeted the brownrider. "Thank you for inviting us to
join this little party." Her eyes, however strayed first to Ulia who
had all but forced her to come and then to U'kaiah. At least having
him around meant she didn't have to sit and watch the other two all
night.
"Drinks?" Ulia declared happily seeing the cups already laid out on
the table. "Here, everyone, drink up! We want this to be a _fun_
night!" She quickly helped herself to serving the cups, darting
glances to G'lal all the while. She'd told Janani that she was _not_
going to sleep with him, but, shards, he looked amazing tonight. She
could hardly take her eyes off him.
U'kaiah took two glasses and passed one on to Janani. And he thought
the goldrider didn't know how to let loose! This was his kind of party!
Booze flowing freely and a girl for every guy! "Cheers," he grinned,
touching his glass to Janani's.
She accepted the glass with a word of thanks. Her eyes, however,
strayed towards her friend. **I know _exactly_ where this night is
headed.** Janani wanted to sigh. How had she allowed Ulia to talk her
into this _again_? The last time she'd come with her friend Ulia had
ended up doing _other_ things while Janani slipped away unnoticed.
That was, after all, why she had sought out U'kaiah. At least this way
she would have company of her own for she'd seen the look Ulia was
casting towards G'lal and knew it would only be a matter of time. She
sipped from her glass and inclined her head to the couch to let him
him know her plans before she turned and walked across the room to
sit.
"We need music!" Ulia declared, looking around the room. When she
spotted Janani walking towards the chairs, she ran over and grabbed
her friend. "No, you have to help me. I promised B'tan that I wouldn't
fall into bed with G'lal. Come one. We can dance," the greenrider
whispered into Janani's ear. Janani had to suppress the urge to roll
her eyes. She didn't even know B'tan, but he was clearly another of
Ulia love interests at the moment. Turning back she smiled to the men,
wondering exactly how Ulia expected to dance without any music.
G'lal looked at the bronzerider almost expectantly. "So, where'd you
hide your gitar?"
"I guess I didn't know I was supposed to be tonight's entertainment,"
U'kaiah shrugged. He looked to Janani. She was the one he was supposed
to be accompanying for the evening, so it would be rude to just leave
her. "I could go get it. It might take a few minutes to find where I
stashed my music sheets."
"Sure," Janani nodded. Music would definitely make the evening more
enjoyable for sure. After he left, she tried to engage the others in
conversation, but that did not last long as they kept looking at each
other. She sighed. She'd be glad when U'kaiah returned. Then she
wouldn't feel like she didn't belong. She turned back to the pair when
she her Ulia giggling and nodding.
"We'll be right back," she managed to tell Janani. "G'lal's just going
to show me something." Janani gave Ulia a look to let her know that
leaving with him would only lead to certain things, but Ulia just
grinned and soon darted off with G'lal.
Sighing, Janani filled her glass and moved over to the sofa to wait.
It wasn't long after that U'kaiah came back, gitar in hand. He was
rather surprised to find that it was just Janani there waiting for him.
"Where is everyone?"
She frowned and pointed to a small chamber off the main room. "They
_were_ going to return," Janani stated, but the sounds that were
starting to be
heard from the other room made it clear that the pair were already
interested in other things. Now that U'kaiah had returned, perhaps they
should just leave.
The bronzerider just shrugged and set the gitar down by the door. It
seemed like a pretty typical G'lal move to him, and he couldn't exactly
blame him for wanting a little alone time with a girl like Ulia. He
just wished he didn't have to hear their giggling and flirting in the
next room. Taking a seat next to Janani, he said, "I guess dancing's
out."
She snorted, "Yeah, I guess so." She wouldn't have minded a bit of
dancing, but now she found herself tapping her fingers on her thigh
wondering what to do. "Do you think maybe we should just leave?"
"Won't your friend get mad at you?" he asked with a nod towards the
room, followed by another round of giggling.
"I think she'll be too busy to notice," she remarked, drinking the
last of her glass and looking around to refill it. "Like there was
ever really anything I could do to stop her," she shook her head as
she rose, walked across the room and refilled her glass. "She actually
expected me, _me_ to keep her from doing, well, _that_." She snorted
again as she walked back across the room. "You _could_ dance with me
even without music," she suggested with a smile.
U'kaiah's eyes had followed her, admiring her. Perhaps it was the
inspiration of the sounds starting to come from the next room, or the
memory of their last meeting, but the fact that they would be alone
together for a while was foremost on his mind. The goldrider had made
herself tantalizingly unavailable to most who would be her suitor, and
the opportunity was just begging to be seized, in his opinion. "I could
dance with you," he agreed looking up at her. U'kaiah plucked the glass
from her fingers to set it down on the side table. "Or I could kiss
you," he said, wrapping his hands around the back of her knees to
silently invite her crawl onto his lap.
She chuckled. Having had a few drinks and having found herself rather
attracted to him in the past, Janani didn't put up much of a fight. "I
still recall that last kiss," she whispered as she sat across his
legs. "Perhaps I don't want to spoil the memory," she teased as her
eyes flashed with a hint of the desire she often kept so bottled up
inside her.
"Who says this memory won't top the last one?" he asked, bringing his
face a little closer to hers, one hand holding her stable while the
other slid up her thigh. "We won't know until we try."
Janani laughed. "Then let's give it a try," she murmured seductively,
ready to take things a bit further this time.
His lips teased hers softly until they melted into each other, slowly at
first but the heat began to build quickly. When they both had to take a
moment to breathe, U'kaiah smiled encouragingly, murmuring softly
"Shards, that's nice..." before moving his lips to her neck. As his
lips traveled down her windpipe, his fingers moved up to the first tie
of her tunic.
The sounds coming from the other room seemed to only add to her own
feelings of need and desire. She hungrily returned his kisses, her own
fingers pulling on his tunic and belt. For the first time in a long
time, Janani wasn't thinking about proper and right and impressing the
Weyrwoman or holding up to the standards she's set for herself. All
that mattered in this moment _was_ the moment.
U'kaiah's fingers slipped into her open tunic, gently kneading and
caressing as his tongue slid over hers. Who would have guessed such
fire lurked under that cool exterior! The sounds of their friend's
passion rang in his ears as his lips traveled down to continue what his
hands had started, his mind conjuring the image that it was Janani's
voice that was urging him on, and not her friend's. It could be soon
enough.
Janani was lost for the moment in passion. As they both continued
their explorations, she felt her body reacting to his every kiss, his
every touch. Janani might have allowed things to go even further if
the sound of something crashing in the other room didn't cause her to
jerk away as though caught red-handed.
"Shhhh, it's all right," he assured her softly, knowing that they were
done, but as yet, he and Janani were still very much alone. It was
obvious she didn't want to continue this here. But there was really no
reason they had to stay. "Come back to my weyr with me."
She turned back to him quickly with a bit of an incredulous look on
her face. Almost instantly, she scooted off his lap and readjusted her
clothes. **How did you manage to lose your head completely, Nani,**
she chided herself.
"Thank you, U'kaiah, but I think it would be best if I _didn't_ do
that," **Yeah, because then I might do something I'd _really_
regret.** She managed to swallow that thought down before she let her
mind wander to what they could do together in his weyr.
"It's getting late. Thank you for coming with me, but I think it's
time we call it a night."
"But..." The bronzerider snorted in disbelief. She had been so into it
just a moment before. Sure, he could understand if she was shy about
fooling around in front of her friend, but to respond like that and then
just expect him to turn it off as easily as closing the lid to a glow
basket? Just like that the whole evening was over? He just didn't know
what to say.
