Description: Tiernan comes to Qorri for a place to stay.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 14 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: Meledei
After visiting Meledei at the Infirmary, Tiernan had headed to the
Headwoman's office. He had been there merely a month prior, but this
time he was in need of a favor. He would need somewhere to stay for
around a month while he waited for the Seacraft Hall to fix his ship.
Because Meledei was at Dolphin Cove, that was the best place for him
to stay - or at least that was what he thought.
He quickly found his way to the Headwoman's office, and knocked on the
door. "Headwoman?" he called out.
"Who's asking?" came the usual voice. Qorri was beginning to think
she needed to get a secretary to sit out there and make sure no one
got into her office that didn't make sense.
"It's Captain Tiernan, ma'am," he said politely, noticing that her
tone seemed a bit short. "Captain of the Seawing, we bring supplies
in?"
"Aye, I didn't think we were due a delivery..." She opened the door and
popped her head out, looking confused.
"No, ma'am," Tiernan said, slightly embarrassed. "You see, my ship's
been damaged, she'll be in dry dock at Topaz Sea Hold until they get
her taken care of. But because the Hold is still recovering from the
storm a few turns back, they don't really have room for me to stay
there. I was wondering if you'd mind me staying here for a month or
so. The Hall wanted me to help out the Dockmaster at the Hall from
time to time."
Qorri frowned, trying to think if she had been told something about this.
"Come in, let me see..." She spun around and went through the messages
left on her desk. "If you're assisting the dolphin hall, wouldn't you be
staying there? Or in the Dockmasters' quarters?" She was confused and
she didn't like that.
"Well, I don't technically report there for another two sevendays,"
Tiernan explained. "My ship came into some trouble during a storm and
was damaged, so this is a somewhat unexpected bit of leave. I don't
really have a home as it were, I spend most of my time away at Sea. I
have marks, if you want me to render payment."
She frowned at that, hurrying to think. **What can I do with a Master
Seacrafter?** "Everyone at the Weyr works. I wouldn't take marks. What
other skills do you have besides sailing, Master?"
Tiernan pondered for a moment, "Uh... hm. I have some basic knowledge
of carpentry, stars, and healing, ma'am. The necessities to survive at
sea at least. I'm not a half bad fisherman either..." He trailed off.
What skills did he have to offer?
"A carpenter hm? That I need. And fish would be welcome to compliment
what we manage already for meals." Qorri was already opening up the list
of things that needed done. "So can you mend furniture?"
"Sure, that should be rather simple, compared to making a ship waterproof,"
Tiernan said. "And catching fish would be simple. Is there anything else you
can think of?"
"Not right now, but I'm sure that could change. You only have two sevendays
though, so that's not very long. And we've got a lot of furniture.."
The discards
could be mended and put out for the riders who needed them or to replace things
which needed to be burned.
"Alright, well, that will work," Tiernan said. "When will I start, and
where do I need to go?" Tiernan liked wood working. It was relaxing,
and it would help him keep his mind off of things. Like his family
troubles.
"You can start tomorrow. For now, I'll assign you quarters and you can get
settled. Tomorrow you will report here after the sixth candlemark. We have
a morning meeting where duties are assigned and read. Someone who will
be put with you should lead you to where you need to go." They would also
assist him with finding the tools and materials he would need.
"That sounds great," Tiernan said. "So where will I be sleeping?" He
asked. He hoped that they would have a private sleeping berth available,
especially given his rank, but would adjust if he had to sleep in a
shared space.
"You'll take one of the guest quarters, usually reserved for visitors during
hatchings." She turned and double checked her list. "This one is free and
clean now." Turning from her office, she opened the door and flagged down
a passing drudge. "Dira, can you take Master Tiernan to cot five please? And
please provide him with furs, clothes, or whatever he might need."
Tiernan smiled at Qorri before heading off with the drudge. "Thanks
very much, Headwoman," he said graciously as he exited.
