Granel was over by the sinks, flushing down some of the mess and
trying to clean off the instruments. Another apprentice was nearby.
"Hey, Reddiq, Dolphin Cove had a fun hatching all right."
"How do you know? You didn't go," Reddiq mumbled.
"Cause B'ras did and he told me. The Weyrwoman went and she was hardly wearing
anything. And then she was practically screwing the other Weyrleader
on the floor in
front of everyone." He chuckled, just into his own manhood and
thinking about it. "One
of the holders called her a Whorewoman and said she was trying to get
every Weyrleader
on Pern under her legs."
"That doesn't sound right. I mean, she hasn't sidled up to the Vista
Point Weyrleader or any of the rest that I saw." Reddiq acted as if
he knew something about what the Weyrleaders did and didn't do.
"That's cause he's her father, idiot. That's where she came from."
Granel was surrounded by stupid people.
Angshel, standing beside Granel, ducked his head down, not wanting to
hear any gossip. Particularly gossip about their Weyrwoman. "So what
do you think will be on the test tomorrow?" he asked, trying to change
the conversation.
Reddiq shrugged, not caring about the test as he threw another bucket in
the sink. "She certainly isn't very friendly with the riders here. Do you think
she wants to retire the Weyrleader with someone else then really? Like taking
her pick of the other Weyrleaders?" He didn't think the rest of them would dare
come and chase when K'sedel would get angry.
Angshel sighed. "Hey guys, we really shouldn't be talking about the
Weyrwoman like this. What if Y'gel comes and hears us?" And besides,
he liked Rhosyn. Shards, he loved her, like she was a long lost big
sister. How could others be talking like this about her?
"What if Y'gel hears us?" Granel mocked, making a funny face as he did so.
"Seriously, wuss. But anyway..maybe K'sedel doesn't want it again. I mean he
has been doing it a long time." He shrugged, working as he talked.
"What did you say?" Angshel put down the instruments he was washing
and turned to the boy who was doing all the talking. He wasn't going
to put up with someone making fun of him, nor the Weyrwoman.
"Can you not hear? I mean seriously. Tattle tales are not appreciated."
Reddiq watched the two of them, hoping this didn't turn into another one
of Granel's spats.
"Who's talking about tattle tales?" The boy put his hands on his hips
and glared at Granel.
"We're over here talking and then you come over and start talking about
how we shouldn't be saying this and that and what if Y'gel hears us. Well
he won't. And if he did, it'd be because you told him." Granel looked pointedly
back at Angshel.
"Well you keep talking trash about the Weyrwoman and it won't have to
go as far as Y'gel, if you don't shut your mouth about her right now."
Angshel stepped up to the slightly older Appentince.
"Oh yeah? What are you going to do about it?" Granel was confident since
he was larger than the young boy.
"I'm gonna stop you." He stepped even closer to the other boy, so
close that if Granel tried to take a punch he would have to step back
to do so.
"How?" **This is ridiculous** Granel watched him, knowing they needed to
get back to work soon.
"How? That's your choice."
"Okay look, I don't have time for this wherry shite. I'm going to get back
to work before I get into trouble." Granel turned around and went back to
what he was doing with Reddiq before.
"Fine then." Angshel kept a wary eye on him, just in case he tried
something cheap.
