Pierka

It was early in the morning the day after the Hatching when Daishii
was released from the Infirmary. Kisiloth was asleep in the dragon
infirmary after having been calmed down the night before, and Daishii
would be reunited with her lifemate once the young dragon had awoken.

A journeywoman healer had assisted her back down into the Weyrling
barracks, as she was still somewhat unsteady on her crutches. As
Daishii got settled in her bunk, her new bunkmate began to stir. She
searched her fellis-laden mind for the girl's name. Pierka. That was
it!

Pierka opened her eyes, alert for any noise at all from the direction
of her new lifemate. But this time it was her roommate. "Hey," she
said softly. "What happened to you?"

"Uh... Kisiloth," Daishii said, feeling her face flush. "She sort of
run me over before she Impressed me. It seems she couldn't really make
up her mind."

She propped her head up on her elbow, "Need any help?"

"Not right at the moment, I just need rest. But if you could help me
out a bit with feeding and bathing her for the next couple of days I
would be really appreciative," Daishii said.

Pierka remembered the words of the Weyrleader and her heart opened up
to the young woman. "Of course," she said. Of course she didn't really
realize how much work she was committing herself to but that didn't
matter. She was developing a friend, just like he said.

"Thank you so much. I'll owe you a huge favor once I get these
stitches out! So how's Liddith doing? That was your dragon's name,
right?" Everything from the night before was a blur to Daishii.

"Don't worry about it," she said. "Yes, and she'd just wonderful of
course. I can't believe how lucky I am." She looked over at her dragon
curled in her couch. She seemed too small for it somehow for the size
of her bed. But she would grow. "How's Kisiloth?"

"She's alright now. She was absolutely devastated once she got fed
though. She was so upset that she had hurt me, I think she thought
that I would get rid of her, out her back in the egg or something,"
Daishii said, shaking her head.

"Oh my! Is she here?" She couldn't quite make out the other side of
the room in the dim light.

"She's in the Dragon Infirmary," Daishii said. "Once she was asleep,
we decided it best to keep her that way for a bit. I imagine she's
going to be anything but happy when she wakes up, though."

"Oh yes I"m sure she was quite devastated by the whole thing, I'll bet
you need something to eat or did they feed you in the infirmary?"

At the mention of food, Daishii's stomach growled loudly. "Oh shards,
I haven't eaten since noon meal yesterday! I completely forgot with
everything that was going on and with making sure Kisiloth was
alright!"

"Well," she said swinging her feet out of her bed. "There was a lot of
food at the feast. I'm sure we can find you a plate. Shall I go see
what I can find?" She stopped for a moment. "Do you suppose I should
ask someone if I can leave?"

"Oh... hmm...." Daishii said. "I know we're supposed to have a curfew
and all, but I think going to the Dining Caverns isn't so bad? I mean,
we are all drudges to our dragons appetites for the next few
sevendays. I bet you'd not be the only weyrling getting food after
curfew..."

"I'm sure I can find something and they'll understand." She rose from
her bed and threw on one of her work tunics. "Can you reassure Liddith
if she wakes while I'm out of sight?"

"Of course," Daishii said, smiling gratefully. She was glad that her
roommate at least seemed to be a nice person. That would make
Weyrlinghood go by a lot quicker. Daishii had bunked with some pretty
annoying apprentices in her time at the Printer Hall, and she knew how
to appreciate something as small as a good roommate.

Pierka smiled back and took off trotting toward the entrance to the
Weyrling barracks. When she was questioned she told them what she was
after and they waved her through. She found the cooler in the kitchen
and asked the night crew if she could take a plate to her friend. They
were helpful right away and one of the drudges even got a hot cup of
klah from their crew's night pot once they realized it was for a newly
impressed weyrling.

She'd rushed as fast as she could just in case but Liddith hadn't
stirred by the time she got back. "Victory," she said with a smile as
she came back through the door.

"I am so glad to see you," Daishii said softly, not wanting to wake up
the sleeping dragon. "And with Hot Klah too? You're amazing." She
began quickly shoveling food in to her mouth, stopping after a few
moments to ask, "So did I miss anything while I was in the infirmary
getting all stitched up?"

Pierka sat on the edge of her cot watching Daishii shovel the food and
feeling sorry for the poor girl. "Oh goodness yes!" she grinned. "You
missed a proper dustup. I guess some holder got up in one of the
visiting Weyrwoman's business and ended up tossing wine on her." Her
eyes widened at the thought. "Of course there were plenty of riders
there to take care of things but the Weyrleader knocked him down! Not
only that but his Lord is threatening to bring him up on charges."

Daishii began to laugh, and nearly started choking. She caught herself
quickly. "Oh my! That would have been a sight to see for certain! All
of the journeymen healers were talking about one of the visiting
Weyrwoman's dresses, apparently it was quite revealing from what I
heard tell of it."

Pierka was grinning from ear to ear. "I couldn't really see..." she
said. "I'm short."

"Well I assume we'll hear more about it the next couple of sevendays
knowing the men at this Weyr. Seriously, I can't believe the gossip at
this place some time. It's worse than the Printer Hall and Harper Hall
combined!" Daishii exclaimed.

At that point Pierka realized she was going to like this girl.
