Sh'del was still getting used to his new office. Everything was just
a bit too shiny and new for his tastes. Give it a month or two and
things would be better, he mused. And of all the times to agree to
take over..just before a Hatching! He shook his head at his own
stupidity, at that, grinning a bit. Like he could have said 'no.'
A knock at the door snapped him out of his thoughts. "Yes? Come in,"
he told the owner of the hand.
Daishii took a deep breath and let it out again before opening the
door, and entering Sh'del's office. Her face was slightly flushed from
embarrassment. "Hello!" She said, curtsying awkwardly. "I... uh... I
had some questions about the lecture from the other day and I wanted
to talk to you about them," she finished up quickly.
Sh'del grinned at her curtsying. "No need to do that, I'm not a Lord
Holder, girl." Leaning forward, he asked, "What questions did you
need help with then?"
"Well, we've been going over the Threadfall schedules so we can
understand what time it falls, and where it will fall and such, and I
fear that the notes I took of the chart aren't as legible as I am
normally capable of. I was wondering if you could help me make head
knobs and tail forks of it all?" She asked nervously.
"Sure, you have the notes on you?" He held out his hand to take them
from her. His green flit, Trouble, meanwhile woke up from her spot on
the corner of the desk and came over to the girl, begging to be
petted.
Daishii passed over her notes before scratching the green firelizard
on the eye ridge. "She really is a glutton for affection now, isn't
she?"
"She always is." He smiled at his flit before studying what she had
done wrong on her paper. It made no sense, what she had down. Or
maybe it was just her handwriting? "Er...maybe you should re-copy
this." He reached in his desk and got her another copy of it.
"Here."
"Ah, great! I was hoping that you had some notes that I could copy off
of. I get so excited in class sometimes that I get to writing so fast
that what I come up with isn't sensible!" She said, shaking her head
ruefully. In truth, she was so busy trying to listen in to other
people's conversations and jot down notes that she had slacked in her
notetaking in class.
"Class is_that_thrilling? Girl, you need to get out more." He gave
her a quizzical look.
Daishii flushed slightly, "Well, I was Holdbred, and after that I went
to the Printer Hall. All I really know is paper, ink and printing
presses. Sure, it's been a bit more interesting since the Hall was
moved here, but it's not like we got to see much of the riders or
their dragons."
So why is your note taking so piss poor? he thought to himself but
didn't say it. Outloud he said, "Well printing presses can be
interesting. I have a good mate who etches plates and runs them
through the press. They're lovely, what he does."
"They are really incredible," Daishii said with a smile. "I will miss
it all if I manage to Impress. It's nice being able to see the new
Harper novels before they're printed." She dutifully copied the notes
hat Sh'del had handed her.
"Well, after a few months you are allowed to go back to your craft
classes in the afternoons." He grinned back. "There's no reason you
have to stop. In fact, the more printers making books we have here at
the Weyr, the happier we'll all be."
Daishii flushed proudly. "Well thank you, that means a lot!" She
quickly looked over her notes, this time neat and orderly. "I think I
have everything that I needed. Thanks very much for letting me copy
them down."
"No problem." He took the notes from her and slid them back into the
desk. Looking back up, he asked, "so how are you settling in?
Enjoying the Weyr?" He knew a lot of the kids from Holds and Halls
were a bit afraid of the different type of life here.
"Well, I've been here for a while since the Hall is here, so I am a
bit more adjusted to how things work here than most. But I am really
enjoying things, it is incredible to see dragons every day! So few
people get that opportunity," Daishii said.
"No, they don't. And who knows, you may even Impress one of those
lazy gits." He leaned forward and called Trouble off from her assault
of the girl. "Sorry, she can get carried away there. Do you need any
more help? Got any questions?" He chuckled as the green flit came
over and head butted him on the chin.
"No, thank you, I think I've gotten everything that I needed!" Daishii
said, standing up quickly. "I suppose I will see you in class
tomorrow?"
"Unless N'vanik has come to his senses, you just might."
