Description: Lyranel Apologizes to Wirnan for Accidentally Dying him Blue.
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Date: month 2, day 1 of Turn 6
Several days after she had spoken to Kaya, Lyranel decided to try and
speak to the Steward
and try and apologize for her actions. She hoped that since a bit of
time had passed that his temper might have cooled some, and he might
be more receptive to her apology. She certainly didn't want to stay on
bad terms with anyone, not if she would be living at Amber Hills for
the foreseeable future.
She had picked up some Klah and pastries from the dining caverns on
her way up, as it was that awkward time between noon meal and
suppertime that seemed to make everyone so hungry. She knew he was in
his office, so she headed there, rapping lightly on the door. **Please
don't be angry with me, please don't be angry with me...** she thought
to herself.
"Come in," Wirnan called, looking up from the hides he was recording
the latest reports on. His eyes fell on the serving girl he'd met just
the other day. "Lyranel, right?" He asked the moment she entered. His
face didn't show anger or amusement, but rather curiosity and a
watchfulness. He noted the tray in her hands and wondered what she
carried and whether it was the _right_ thing, unlike the other day.
"Yes, Steward," she said, her face flushing a bit. It seemed that she
was doing an awful lot of blushing as of recent! "I, uh, brought you a
gift. Since I inconvenienced you the other day. It's just klah and
pastries, freshly prepared by the Head Chef. All I did was set them in
this basket, so I don't think I could have destroyed them that badly."
She handed over the basket, the look in her eyes hopeful.
It was almost as though she'd read his thoughts. A strange feeling that.
"Thank you Lyranel," he motioned for her to place the tray on the
desk. "It is a nice respite from the work that occupies my time."
Wirnan reached for a pastry, took a bit and smiled as he held it up to
show her that all was, in fact, as it should be.
Lyranel smiled, happy that thus far, she'd seemed to have done the
right thing. "I wanted to apologize to you, now that you are a bit
less angry about the whole situation. It didn't occur to me that
multiple things might resemble sweetsand. I guess that just goes to
show how silly I am."
"It _is_ very important that you learn the difference, for we wouldn't
want such a thing to happen again." Wirnan was lucky that Kaya had
been there to help him remove most of the blue dye. "As long as you
work hard to make sure such things do not happen again for anyone in
the hold, then I can easily forgive and move one." He reached for the
klah, sipping it with a satisfied ahh.
"Have you been settling in better otherwise?" He asked her, trying to
be polite as he wasn't quite ready to return to his hidework.
"Well, I have decided that stock probably isn't for me, so I've been
helping out in the kitchens a bit. And I've been watching the Harper
lessons when I am off duty so I can learn some of the things that I
didn't get the opportunity to be taught back at the cothold," Lyranel
said with a smile. "How have you been doing, aside from being
temporarily Harper blue?"
He cleared his throat a bit uncomfortably. He was sure she would have
heard all the stories of his sudden wedding. He'd only been back in
his office working for a few days now and though the hold had run
smoothly with his absence he found he had much to catch up on.
"Things are well," he replied, knowing as he and Kaya had discussed
that it was important to put on a good front for all the others. "I am
hoping I do not end up blue again anytime soon."
"Well, I will do my best to ensure that does not occur again," Lyranel
said diplomatically. "I believe I had the pleasure of making your
wife's acquaintance the other day, she seemed to be a rather lovely
girl," she added, not realizing the full story behind the situation
"Aye, that she is," Wirnan replied though his throat almost betrayed
the deep thoughts he had on the matter. Kaya _was_ lovely, but she had
also connived this entire mess.
Sensing that it was a bit of a sensitive subject between the two,
Lyranel decided to change the subject. "So... did you grow up here, or
were you raised someplace else?" She asked, trying to be
conversational. She had to make new friends here, that as a fact.
"Not far from here," he replied. "Amethyst Cliff was my home growing
up. Though I've traveled a bit since then, working at other holds
before I finally took the job here."
"Really? What is it like, travelling around? I've pretty much always
lived at a small cothold, I didn't really get to leave much. My
parents sent me on runnerback when I got married, and of course the
nice greenrider brought me here when my husband passed away. Other
than that, I haven't seen much at all," Lyranel said.
"It's quite an eye-opening experience. Though I've not seen nearly as
much of the world as others have. Perhaps you can visit some of the
other local holds sometime, just so see the differences that abound."
He noted her other words, wondering about her past. "I'm sorry you
lost your husband." She seemed young, so that must have meant she
married young or had not been married long.
"Don't be, I'm not," she said somewhat boldly. She was coming to terms
with the fact that Gorial was gone now, and she was more happy with it
than sad. "It was a marriage of convenience, it was never even
consummated before he past away, although we were wed for 4 turns,"
she explained. "My Da was stuck with 6 daughters, myself being the
youngest. He ran out of good marriages far before mine came."
He understood her words probably more than she knew. Having felt that
his own marriage wasn't so far from what she described. 4 turns? Could
he survive 4 turns of being in her presence without making their union
real or finding himself someone _else_ to satisfy the needs of his own
body.
"It is, sadly, the way many marriages are made. But it is our duty to
our Hold and to all of Pern to marry and populate." His heart ached at
that thought, knowing he would not be able to fulfill that last duty.
Yet, he couldn't share that with anyone, no that was his own personal
sorrow.
"Yes, but why can't we marry as we see fit? Wouldn't a happy union
produce more children, and happier children than one of convenience?"
Lyranel refused to believe that she - uneducated and uncultured as she
was - was the only person that had ever considered this. "How many
lives are ruined by duty and necessity? Surely I can't be the only one
who feels this way!" She continued, her voice imploring.
No, she was most certainly not the only one to feel that way. Hadn't
Wirnan been living half a lie for the past few sevendays. His marriage
to Kaya was a farce, thrust upon him by her actions. Yet, there _was_
something there, between them. He just didn't know if they could sort
it out amidst all the other emotions related to their union.
"It just isn't the way things work out most times. Though, I, too,
wish that was not always the case." He couldn't say anymore. She was
hardly more than a stranger to him. He hadn't even told Zathris, one
of his closest friends, just how much difficulty there was between
them. What could anyone do about it now? What was done was done.
Lyranel frowned, studying his face carefully. From her talks with Kaya
previously, and now with Wirnan as well, she got the feeling that
there's was not a love match. She didn't say this aloud though, and
merely nodded. "sometimes things happen for a reason," she said
softly. "Even if it doesn't make sense when it happens, a lot of times
it's for the better. If Gorial and I wouldn't have married, I doubt I
would have ended up here."
"Hmm, yes. I guess that is true," **though we don't always know the
reasons,** he thought to himself.
"Well, I know Amber Hills is always glad to have new people join us. I
do hope you find your time here better than what happened in the
past." Wirnan knew he would need to get back to work soon if he hoped
to finish.
"Thank you very much, sir. I know you've probably got more work to do,
so I won't keep you any longer," Lyranel said, standing up and
curtsying quickly.
