They were still working to clean up after the hurricane but Threadfall
still came and riders were still injured so the business of the
infirmary had to go on as usual. Tavia was working long hours now in
the infirmary as were all the healers and apprentices. Even drudges
were helping with sweeping and cleaning up some of the broken pottery.
She monitored the entrance as the Fall began waiting for the first
injured to arrive.
Taeshin walked into the entrance of the infirmary slowly, almost
carrying the barely lucid Bluerider in his arms. The Rider's dragon
had been caught by a clump of thread blown of course, and the dragon
had just finished being treated. As with most bonded couples, the
Rider would not leave until his dragon was taken care of, despite his
extensive wounds. After the dragon had been taken care of, the Master
Dragonhealer had ordered Taeshin to bring the Rider to the infirmary to
get his own healing.
"A little help here please" Taeshin called into the room. "I have a
threadscored Rider with a broken arm, who is barely conscious"
Tavia leaped to help and one look at the rider told her he needed more
than just her help. "Right here," she said taking the man's other arm
over her shoulders and guiding them toward one of the empty cots.
"Have you given him any fellis?" she asked before she turned toward the
back. "Vandor" she called.
Taeshin looked grateful for the help and went were the healer led him
too. With her help he carefully placed the injured Rider down in the
cot.
"No" he responded to the question. "He hasn't had any fellis. I
believe the shock from his injuries, added to the pain of his dragon's
injuries are what is making him loose consciousness."
Taeshin may be an apprentice Dragonhealer, but in learning that Craft
one must also learn a little something about Riders and their ailments
as well. Many times the healing of one depended upon the healing of
the other when it cam to bonded Rider and Dragon.
Vandor didn't take long. His hands were stained with redwort, maroon
against the darkened skin. He took one look at the dragonrider and
immediately dipped his hands in a vat ready and waiting. They were
kept in every area for just such a reason, saving time and energy.
Once his hands were painted with the redwort once more, he turned to
examine the man. "Tavia, prepare some fellis, please."
She immediately nodded and swiftly went to the appropriate counter to
mix a draught of the medicine which she brought back with her to
administer. She lifted the riders head and shoulders supporting the
semi-conscious man with her own and lifted the cup to his lips.
"Here," she said "You need this so we can set your arm."
Taeshin took a few steps back to allow the two Healers to do their
work. He knew Healers needed space and quiet to do their work
properly and he wanted to make sure they had it. Not just for the
Rider's sake, but for the Dragon as well; it hurt Taeshin to his core
when a dragon went between.
"His Wingleader said that he and his dragon were caught by an errant
clump of Thread. The broken arm, however, came from the Rider's fall
of his dragon when they came into the Weyr." Taeshin supplied to the
Healers, not knowing if the information was needed or not, but still
thinking they should know.
"Thank you for getting him here so quickly," she smiled. She still
held the rider and felt it when his body finally relaxed. "Ok, he's
out." she said to Vandor.
Vandor's eyes darted up to fall upon the young man and he nodded in thanks
for the information passed. Tavia admnistered the fellis, so he waited
for the mixture to do its work. The man had barely been conscious and it
took little time for him to drift off. A quick glance at score and break
and it was determined that the score should be attended to first.
"Tavia, prepare a poultice for the scoring." Thank Faranth for fellis.
Treating wounds like this was already not a pretty sight, but made less
grim thanks to the medicinal properties of the plant. They were also
fortunate that the break was a simple one and would be easily treated, but
first thing was first. While Tavia prepared the poultice, Vandor set
about cleaning the wound.
Taeshin continued to watch the Healers at work. He looked at the face of
the Bluerider to make sure the man was still breathing. He was sure that
the Healers were quite competent in their Craft, but the last thing he
wanted to hear was the heart-wrenching cry of a Dragon going /between/
because it's Rider had perished. He also knew that if the Dragon went
/between/ because of it's injuries, then the Rider, in his condition, may
just die of shock. So he watch the face intently for any sign of pain
that might indicate a problem with the Dragon.
Tavia jumped to do Vandor's bidding like a good nurse and soon
returned with the poultice. The young dragon healer's concern for the
rider showed in his face as he watched. "He's in good hands," she said
reassuringly. "What's your name?" she asked.
It was the burn that was tended to first. Both injuries were severe, but
sometimes one outranked the other. Vandor made quick work of it, then
wrapped a bandaged. After that was done, he turned to the break.
Carefully he held the arm in his two paw like hands. Carefully, he
manipulated it and set the break back into place. "Splint." Vandor
called while he examined the arm further to make sure it was straight.
Tavia handed him first the wooden supports and then held out a couple
of rolls of thin bandage that would be wrapped around and around the
arm to keep everything in place.
Taeshin looked to the woman healer who spoked to him, "I'm Taeshin."
he said simply, not wanting to interrupt the working Healers.
Taeshin began to look towards the Infirmary entrance. Although he was
a Dragonhealer, it would be rude to leave without permission from the
Healers, both of which outranked him in their own Craft. His skills
could be best used elsewhere however, and he was impatient to get back
and help.
Perhaps Vandor was psychic. Or perhaps he somehow noticed the
impatience in the young man even as busy as he was. Or maybe it just
dawned on him that the dragonhealer was still there and didn't
necessarily need to be. "Vandor. Thank you for your help Taeshin.
We'll take it from here." With Tavia's assistance, the arm was braced
into place with quick hands. Once done, Vandor straightened to stain
them with redwort once more. Get an apprentice to watch him for an
hour or two. We've got more coming in."
"Well Taeshin, do you want to run back to the dragons and
make sure we have an update for the rider here as soon as the fellis
wears off? I don't think we want him tearing out of here too soon." She
smiled up at Vandor.
Taeshin bowed to both of the Healers before turning and almost running
back to the other Dragonhealers and the injured Blue. He promised
himself that he would return as soon as possible to give the Rider a
thorough update on the condition of his dragon. Riders concerned
about their dragon's health tended to forget their own issues, and
Taeshin knew the Rider would need lots of rest.
