Her fingers tapped impatiently on her desk. She's sent the drudge to
let the boy know she would be expecting him. Janani hoped he would
arrive soon as she wished to get this matter resolved quickly. The
eggs were already hardening on the sands and the time for decisions
was now or never. Between her watchful eyes, those of some of her
trusted riders, and the Headwoman, the decision had already been made.
The only person now that could alter that course of action was the boy
himself.

Taeshin sighed as he once again walked to the Weyrwoman's office. The
drudge that Janani had sent found him just as he was leaving the
Master Dragonhealer's office. Taeshin was nervous, a lot less nervous
than the first time Janani had called him, yet still nervous. Every
since Angdelouth had laid her massive clutch, Taeshin had been
wondering when the Weyrwoman would let him know if he would stand or
not. He knocked on the door a little harder than he intended, his
mind elsewhere.

"Weyrwoman Janani?" he called sheepishly.

"Come in, Taeshin," she stated, gesturing towards the chairs before
her. "I hear things have been going well with the tasks I've set forth
for you. Would you agree?" She wanted to hear his opinion before
giving her own on certain matters.

Taeshin sat down and thought about the question before answering. He
wanted to make sure that he gave the Weyrwoman the true answer, and
not what he thought she might want to hear.

"Yes Weyrwoman Janani. I can't say that I have enjoyed having the
extra chores, but I did everything that you and Headwoman Qorri asked.
I also spoke, and listened, to every person in the Weyr that you
asked me to speak too. I know now that I can't help how I feel, but I
have to be able to control my actions. Especially if I ever Impress,
because the honor of the Weyr could be ruined if I can't control
myself." Taeshin responded to the Weyrwoman, having thought about the
true purpose of his extra lessons and talks for sometime now.

"Well, Taeshin," she replied, her hands curling to rest under her chin
as she leaned forward. "I am pleased to hear you say that. I've been
watching you closely and I feel that you _have_ in fact learned what I
set out for you to do. No one ever said it was a problem to feel the
way you felt, but rather it was the actions you attributed to those
feelings that caused us alarm. We cannot be expected to like everyone
or everything in our path, but we must learn to make the best of
things, or else what would our future hold?" She tilted her head with
a questioning look.

"Now, I think we have one final matter to discuss here before we can
talk about the hatching. If you are allowed to Stand, and no dragon
calls to you this time, how will you react? What will happen then?
Will I be forced to have this same conversation with you again down
the road or will you make an effort to become a better person
regardless of whether you Impress or not?" It was a difficult question
for anyone let alone someone whom she knew had felt that bitter
disappointment of being left on the sands after a hatching.

Taeshin swallowed hard, his eyes unfocused looking at the floor as he
thought about the question.

"I can't say that I won't be disappointed...again. It will hurt, and
I'll be upset. But this time, I promise, I'll control myself. I
won't let my disappointment about not Impressing turn into anger
towards those who did. I'll focus all the energy into my craft
lessons, or chores, or running or something. I promise, I won't let
it get out of hand" Taeshin responded. Just the thought of once again not Impressing left Taeshin cringing as he gazed up at Janani, but there was also resolve in his eyes. "I won't disappoint you or the Weyr again."

"Then it is settled," Janani replied, relaxing back into her chair.
"You will stand and make the Weyr proud." She smiled at the boy

Taeshin eye's widdened in surprise. For a while, he thought that
Janani and her golden Angdelouth wouldn't allow him to stand for the
Hatching. Janani hadn't been pleased with his actions, and
Angdelouth, like any queen, was very protective of her clutch. But
with the words the Weyrwoman had spoken, the world was suddenly
alright again. Being a candidate didn't guarantee Taeshin an
Impression, but it meant that he still had the chance. It also meant
he still had the chance to right some wrongs, and regain his honor in
the Weyrwoman's eyes.

Before Taeshin realized what he was doing, he jumped up, grabbing the
Weyrwoman's hands from across the desk and began swinging them back
and forth. "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" he seemed to sing
more than speak.

She had to struggle not to chuckle at the lad's enthusiasm and
exuberance. "Make me proud Taeshin and then I will really be thanked."
She paused a moment then with her mouth quirking into a small smile
she added, "If you're in agreement then, I think we can say you are
free of my extra duties. You'll want to use that extra time well for
if you _do_ Impress, you won't remember what it was like to have free
time for many, many months."

Taeshin nodded enthusiastically. He couldn't even form words, just
bob his head like some over excited bird. He couldn't wait to tell
Qorri, and C'jex and anyone else in the Weyr who happened to cross his
path today. He still had a chance to realize his dream, and he was
not going to screw it up. Without thinking Taeshin got up and ran
from the Weyrwoman's office, so excited he forgot to say goodbye, he
just _had_ to tell _anyone_ who would listen. He was barely down the
hall before he could clearly be heard exclaiming to someone "I get to
stand!"
