Description: E'naer receives a new candidate.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 7, day 1 of Turn 3
E'naer was free and available when he heard a searchrider was bringing in a new candidate. So, he decided to go to receive him or her. He was Weyrlingmaster's third after all, and one day the candidate might be a weyrling under his care. He liked to learn to know them when they were still candidates. That way the young riders would already know him and maybe trust him with their worries.
Standing on the windy plateu, he watched the searchrider land. He was old blue-rider friend of his.
"Hi, there!" he called when the searchdragon had settled down.
"Hi E'naer! I brought you a new lad" the searchrider greeted and helped his passenger to open the straps and dismount with his parcels.
"Hello, and welcome to the Dragons Fall Weyr. I'm E'naer, rider of Eillispeth, Weyrlingmaster's third," he greeted and offered his hand for a shake. Same time he observed the youth. He was a lanky teenager boy, with long limbs and dazed expression. He had a ruddy brown hair and face with freckles. Quite nice looking lad, the greenrider in E'naer noted. He also noted how the boys look wandered, first to his face and the scarred left cheek, from there to his greenrider knots and only then to the offered hand.
The boy blushed when he realized he was staring. "Hi, I'm Cheirus, apprentice from the Vintner hall", the boy answered and gave E'naer a firm shake.
"Nice to meet you Cheirus. How was your flight here?"
"Exciting, I've never ridden a dragon before! The view was breathtaking," the boy's answer was filled with euthiasm.
"That's good to hear," E'naer smiled, "let's get you settled down. I'll show you the candidate quarters and then take you to meet the Headwoman. Need a hand with those bags of yours?"
"No, no, I can manage. There isn't that much to carry," the boy hastily answered. He shouldered his bags, only two of them, even if the other one was quite big.
"Well, then, follow me," E'naer said and led the boy down to the stairs and inside the weyr. While they walked down, E'naer was giving him a quick tour, telling what was found on what level.
"This must be awfully confusing to you," he remarked, when the left the stairs and started along the corridors, towards the candidate barracks.
"Yeah," the boy agreed. "This place is huge. How don't you get lost here?"
"You'll learn to find your way after a while. Meanwhile, don't hesitate to ask someone if you do get lost" E'naer answered. "Don't do as I did when I first came here. I wandered around, lost, for candlemarks, too shy to ask help."
The boy chuckled. "I plan not to do that," he said.
"Here we are," E'naer proclaimed with a flourish gesture. "These are the candidate quarters. The boys are sleeping here and the girls there."
The boy gulped nervously when he noticed that only a curtain separated the genders. "Is that… proper?" he asked.
"Yes, in a weyr it is," E'naer sounded amused. "Those beds are free, just pick any of them," he pointed the cots he knew were available.
Nodding, Cheirus placed his bags on one bed randomly. "Guess it's as good as any" he murmured.
"Now, I'll take you to see the Headwoman. She'll give you your schedules and assign you to your duties" E'naer said.
"Duties, huh? No escape from work?"
"No, never. You'll be surprised how much hard work being a dragonrider includes. Ever washed an animal bigger than a cot?"
"Can't say I have. I'm kind of expecting it, though" the boy answered.
"That's the spirit," E'naer slapped his back encouragingly.
