Description: D'ren and Lenala chat about family on the way to eat.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 13, day 8 of Turn 6
D'ren spotted her in the hall and walked faster to catch up. "Hi Lenala."
"Hello, D'ren. How have you been?" Lenala replied with a smile. She
always had a smile for all bronzriders.
"Good." And that was true. Moving here had been the right choice. "How are
you?"
"Just fine," Lenala replied. Except her dalliance with U'kaiah had
made her realize how empty her life was. Not that she was going to
admit that to anyone.
"On your way to the dining cavern? Can I join you?" He wanted to stay
on friendly terms with her, and not just because Menanth had caught
Vilarth. Maybe he was being foolish, but there was something
interesting about Lenala. Her reputation for being empty-headed and
lazy didn't strike him as truth. At least, it was an exaggeration.
D'ren had a feeling there was something more to her.
"Yes, of course you can," Lenala replied. It's not like she had any
plans or company and D'ren was nice young man.
He smiled and offered his arm. "I don't think I ever asked about your
family. Do you have any siblings?"
"Yes, I have, a brother. I'm a holdbred," Lenala replied, taking his
arm and rewarding him with a sweet smile.
"Me too. I have three brothers and a sister in Emerald Falls
territory." They made their way down the hall to the dining cavern.
"That far? Except it isn't, if you have a dragon," Lenala said.
He nodded. "I visit a few times a year. And you met my sister and
youngest brother at the Hatching. I've been trying to convince my
sister to apprentice as a harper."
"Does she have talent? Singing or art?" Lenala asked. She never had
that choice. Even if Hall had accepted girls back then, her parents
would never allowed it.
"Singing. She has a wonderful voice, just like our mother." D'ren
himself had only a little talent in that area.
"Well, then, she should really take advantage of it if she has talent.
I heard the Harper Hall has some wonderful teachers," Lenala said.
"That's what I keep telling her." They entered the dining cavern. "But
she's shy, and my father is ... a bit traditional."
"My sympathy is on her. My father is like that too," Lenala said.
"Was he unhappy about you coming to the Weyr? Did he try to stop you?"
D'ren knew many parents wanted to keep their girls away from the Weyr
because of its reputation, and now there was the added danger of
Threadfall.
"Well, let's just say that Impressing a gold did allay the situation,"
Lenala replied. "At least he can now brag having a gold rider
daughter. He already had a husband to picked up for me," Lenala
continued. She didn't like to dwell on her past.
He lead her to the head table. "I'm glad you escaped that."
"Me too," Lenala smiled. "And I do hope that your sister escapes it too."
"I have to keep reminding her that dreams can come true. After all, I'm a
dragonrider." He sent loving thoughts to Menanth, dozing on their ledge.
"Dreams are important and shouldn't be given up," Lenala agreed.
D'ren smiled. Maybe Lenala was only playing a part, trying to manipulate
him like the rumors said. He _was_ a bronzerider, and he'd won her Flight
... but he hoped not. If this was the real Lenala, he liked her.
