Unpleasant Reunion

Writers: Bree, Eimi

Characters: Miryene, Ivenn
Description: Miryene makes it clear to Ivenn that she's not very happy about his visit.
Location: Vintner Hall
Date: month 8, day 27 of Turn 3

Miryene had calmed down slightly by the time Jio was escorted out by a rather smug looking Hallmaster, but she still looked wary as she watched her former husband settle into the chair across from her. Both of her hands were settled protectivly over her stomach, and the expression in her eyes was almost defiant. "Ivenn."

They sat in silence for a few moments as he looked down at her hands thoughtfully. Finally he looked up to met her hazel eyes. "Miryene, it's been... it's been a long time."

"Yes," she replied stiffly. "I suppose you've heard everything, then..."

"I don't know if I heard _everything_," he admitted He kept his voice even.
"I heard that you have been married and that... that your new husband treated you badly. And of course, I heard about the baby. Congratulations." "Thank you." Miryene glanced down at her hands, feeling the restless movement of her baby inside her. It wouldn't be that long now... "You've heard just about everything. My husband has disappeared."

"I hear you have refused to separate from your husband." He could understand her reluctance. Deciding to dissolve his marriage to Miryene had been the hardest thing he had ever done in his life. Shards, he had hoped she would find happiness. He had never imagined _this_.

"I'd like to wait and see if he turns up first," Miryene replied quietly. It was growing harder to imagine with each passing day that she'd _want_ to let him back into her life if he did turn up, though. Deserting her was bad, deserting her while pregnant was worse... but the man hadn't even gone to visit his own _children_, which had finally pushed her over the line from annoyance to true anger.

He nodded, but gently leaned forward to lay his hand on hers. "But, Miryene. You're going to have a baby soon. Your child needs a father."

Miryene stiffened and pushed back away from him. "Oh. Is _that_ why you're here?" Ivenn tried to hide the hurt when she pulled away. "I'm here to try to speak some sense into you Miryene. You have your baby. That's what you always wanted. But you need to have someone to take care of you. You and the baby."

"So I should let Fielton hand me off to whatever man will take me?" Miryene demanded. "This is my _life_!" "No, he wants to see you happy, same as the rest of us." He stood to his feet, and walked around behind his chair. The journeyman just had to move.
He leaned against the chair back and was silent a moment. "Master Fielton... He knows how I still feel about you."

"And how is that?" Miryene's voice was becoming angry. "You left me, Ivenn!"

He shook his head emphatically. "It was never because I didn't love you.
Never that. It was your obsession with having a child even if it would kill you. It became more important than anything. It seemed like a baby was more important than me, than our marriage, even your life. I didn't stop loving you. I just couldn't live my life afraid that the next time I touched you would be the time that killed you."

Her cheeks flushed with anger. "So now you're going to come back and pick up where we left off? As if the last seven turns never happened?" He spoke gently. Ivenn remembered how Miryene's temper could be. "You have your baby now, Miryene. You've been ready to be a mother for so many turns and now you will have that. And maybe now... Now you can be ready to be a wife."

"I am a wife," she replied stiffly. "And just because I am considering disolving my marriage does not mean I'm ready to be handed back to you like a lost shirt." He threw his hands up in frustration. "Does the fact that I love you _still_ mean nothing to you?"

It was like the last days of their marriage all over again... and the fact that he could still make her so _angry_ made her think that maybe she did still care for him. "Men keep telling me that. And then they leave."

She still just didn't get it. How many times did she reach for him purely with the intentions of becoming pregnant, and not to make love to her husband? "You left me long before I left, Miryene. I was just the first one to walk out the door."

"Fine." She wrapped her arms around herself, feeling defensive. "If that's how you feel... then maybe we're wasting our time discussing it." "Even now that you have your baby, you still can't see me? What do you have to lose by giving me another chance if I'm here wanting to give you one?"

Miryene shook her head. "It's too much to think about right now. Can't you understand that, at least? So much has happened... I can't take anymore changes yet, Ivenn. I just need something to stay constant." "And that is what I'm trying to offer you." He stepped closer. Ivenn knew she was not ready to have him touch her, but she had to understand just how much he meant what he said. "If you will stop running from me, I will stop running from you, because you might have forgotten about me over the turns, but on the First Egg, I never forgot you, Miryene."

"I need time to think," she said again, closing her eyes. "Please, Ivenn...
if you care as much as you say you do... please just give me time to think."

"All right, Miryene. You don't have to decide now," he sighed. "But please, think about it."

"I will." She wouldn't have a choice. If Fielton had brought him here, it meant the Hallmaster was starting to think something had to be done about her. "Thank you," he said with a relieved sigh. It was not the answer he had hoped for, but at least there was _some_ hope left. "I will let you alone to think on it. But I will be here. I'm not leaving you alone again."
