Overheard in the Weyr

Writers: Chelle, Ames
Date Posted: 7th March 2011

Characters: Janani, Lula, Marda
Description: Janani overhears some of the Weyrfolk chatting about the latest rumors.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 13, day 20 of Turn 5
Notes: Mentioned: N'vanik, Rhosyn, Traelyn

Despite the fact that Dolphin Cove had a new Weyrwoman, that wasn't
exactly the only piece of news floating around. Some of the riders had
been at River Bluff for the Hatching. The Weyrleader had been there.
He had stayed there. Through the night. And everyone had seen which
ledge his bronze had been on. And there had also been the matter of
him going back to River Bluff a sevenday after the Weyrwoman had
gone. People had seen who he was speaking to and where he went,
_again_.

Humming as she worked, Marda made up the bedfurs in Janani's weyr
quickly. She would have to dust, turn the glows, and straighten up. The
dirty linens would be taken and she would scent the withies on the
stone floor.

Lula was sweeping in the bathing chamber, though she wasn't as quick
as Marda. "Hey Marda, I bet the Weyrleader will go to River Bluff if he
loses next time, you mark me."

"He won't leave us. Not like that," she scoffed, unwilling to believe
so ill of N'vanik.

"Are you kidding? He's so hot for that little Weyrwoman's skirts that
he probably forgot he had a Weyr till his Weyrwoman left him. And
anyway, did you know they were at Vista Point together?" Lula clucked
her tongue, bringing that bit of history up.

"What?" Marda's head came up and she stopped pulling the fur.

"Oh yeah, F'rise was there," Lula announced.

Janani, who had just made her way up the back corridor to her weyr,
paused in the shadows as she caught wind of the conversation being
bantered around by the women inside. N'vanik was seeing one of the
_other_ Weyrwomen? Staying in the shadows for the moment, she
decided it might be wise to hear a bit more of this particular conversation.

"Did he ever fly her then?" Marda was interested now. F'rise's word
was as good as a mark.

"Nope. He was there for some turns, then left for Dragonsfall where he
met Traelyn. Seems now he's making up for lost time." Lula waggled her
brows.

"Well old K'sedel has to know then. Of course he probably doesn't care.
He's mated. Maybe the girl deserves a little tickle and just can't find it at
her Weyr?" Marda giggled.

"That's about right. As I remember, there's only one young bronze at River
Bluff." Lula swept again, finishing up before she moved to throw the dust
off the ledge.

She'd heard enough. Pushing from the shadows, she retraced her steps a
bit and made sure she made enough 'noise' as she entered her own weyr
once again.

"Ah, hello. Thank you for seeing to my weyr," she said to both women,
all the while her thoughts retracing the things she'd just heard them
say. Did N'vanik have other plans then? Did he perhaps _want_ to leave
Dolphin Cove? He would be giving up the most esteemed position, but
maybe he hoped to gain it during a future flight at River Bluff.

Janani moved over to the table positioned in the center of the room
and placed her tray and the few odd hides and things she carried down
before she took her seat. She wanted to concentrate on the work she'd
planned to do, but right now she found that more difficult than she'd
imagined it to be.

Marda and Lula both made quick curtseys before they grabbed their things
and left the weyr, sharing a look between them as they did.

Janani sat for quite a while in silent, lost in thought. So, N'vanik was seeing
the River Bluff Weyrwoman? Had _that_ been the reason that Traelyn lost
sight of living? It did make her wonder.

Tapping her fingers against the table she contemplated what this news would
mean for her. Angdelouth was nearing her rise any day now and the winner
of that flight would be the Weyrleader. Up until now, she _had_ been considering
trying to steer her golden queen to choose him, for he _was_ well suited for
the job, but perhaps now she wouldn't push the queen in any direction and
simply see what happened. If N'vanik really _didn't_ want to win this flight,
so he could find his way into the arms of the other Weyrwoman then she
figured his dragon would not fight hard enough for hers.

But what did this _really_ all mean for her? Either he would win the flight or
he wouldn't. If he won, he would remain Weyrleader here. Would she _care_
if he had bedmates anywhere else? That was a hard question to answer.
Janani had never been one to settle down all that much herself, though she
had had certain partners she'd stayed with longer than others. Could she,
_would_ she expect that N'vanik would only share his bed with her alone?

Shaking her head she knew that she would never dare to even think that
thought. She had no intentions of pledging herself to just one man, so why
would she expect him to do something of the sort. It did make her wonder if
his loyalties would be divided, _if_ he even won the flight. **You can't be
jealous of something you don't even have, Nani,** she told herself with a
shake of her head.

Reaching down she picked up the hides she intended to read and a sweet
cookie from the tray and decided that for now there really wasn't anything
she _could_ do about it, or even _wanted_ to do about it. **At least one
thing I've learned from this is that if N'vanik _does_ win, I'm sure he won't
be expecting _me_ to be a one-man type of woman, cause that isn't likely
to happen,** she chuckled to herself before munching on her cookie and
getting back to her reading.
