Janani was enjoying a bit of a respite in her own weyr, pleased to have
finished her daily tasks a bit early. She sat, with a piece of leather
across her knees, working the material until it was pliable. She
intended to cut it, impress her favorite designs into it and use them as
hair thongs to match the belt she planned to make next. It was her own
small gift to herself for finally having achieved one of her greatest
dreams, becoming Weyrwoman. She knew her father would have approved of
her choice and that made her proud as well. Picking up her tools she
began to outline the more intricate decorations she intended to carve
into the leather.
Her thoughts were interrupted as a gold burst into the sky high above
the Weyr, bugling her peaceful intent.
}I'm Genith. Dragonsfall is mine. Mine wants to visit with yours. Is
she free?:{ the gold asked Dolphin Cove's Senior Queen.
}:Genith of Dragonsfall has come to see you,:{ Angdelouth bespoke her
rider.
**Tell them they are most welcome to come to my weyr.** Janani replied,
setting her leather-work off to the side on a small table that currently
housed a few such little projects.
}:Mine bids you welcome. She awaits you in her weyr.:{
Hygalia paused on the ledge, not wanting to just barge in. "It's
Hygalia of Dragonsfall. May I come in?"
"Of course!" Janani called, "You are most welcome." She'd already risen
and gone to the small table in the room where a tray had been laid out.
The klah was not it's freshest, but she could always send for more.
"Thank you," Hygalia smiled, stepping in with wherhide jacket in hand.
"And I thought River Bluff was warm this time of the turn! It's
sweltering here, isn't it."
She laughed lightly at that. "Yes, it sure is. One of the reasons I fell
in love with this place. Come, sit. I'd enjoy a bit of company. What
brings you to Dolphin Cove?" Janani indicated a chair at the table and
the tray of refreshments sitting in the center.
"I just thought it was time I introduced myself, and I hate doing so
through formal meetings." Hygalia glanced around, noticing that it had
that freshly settled into look about it. "How are you liking your new
situation, then?"
"I must say it came as a rather pleasant and unpleasant surprise at the
same time," Janani answered. "It is not easy to follow such a near
travesty, yet, this is something I've desired for so long I will not let
the cloud that surrounds the Weyr take away from the fact that I have
achieved one of my greatest goals." She smiled at her fellow Weyrwoman. "Things will
not be easy for some time, but soon, they will settle and accept that
Traelyn is gone and that I have now taken her place."
Well, she was certainly the ambition one, Hygalia thought as she took
the seat across from her. That was necessarily a bad thing. Hygalia
also had ambitions. Perhaps every goldrider did and that's why they
were chosen. She just found the fact that Janani admitted to it so
easily after Traelyn's unfortunate departure. "I'm sure they are
relieved that it all was decided so quickly. It's not good for the
leadership to be up in the air like that."
"The people have been good to me, so far. They mourn the loss of their
Weyrwoman and for many their friend. It is not easy for them, I know
that. Only time will truly heal the people here at Dolphin Cove," she
filled two glasses with fresh juice for both of them and passed when to
Hygalia. "I am pleased you visited. I know not all Weyrwomen get along
between the Weyrs, but I would love to see that change." She watched the
other goldrider before adding, "You have done this far longer than I have, but
I've already found that holding this responsibility can be a lonely job
at times. It would be less lonely if we," she indicated them both, "were
able to share from time to time." Janani might have bitten off more than she
could chew, but she didn't see any reason to deny her ideas, at least not to the
other Weyrwoman.
"Oh I heartily agree," Hygalia assured her, "with all except the part
that I've done this far longer than you. I've not even been in place a
whole turn yet, and neither has Rhosyn. The South has seen a lot of
changes in the last few months."
"Well considering I've not even been at this a month, you _have_ been at
this much longer than me," Janani smiled at that. "Just think, the three
of us could change the South in ways the others haven't even imagined!
Who knows!"
The philosophical side of Hygalia wanted to point out that such a change
has already happened. But it really wasn't a very material point, so
she kept that thought to herself. "And have you seen anything you want
to change yet? Not necessarily only in the South."
"In the Weyrs? Not so much." Janani replied, "But I wish I could stand
up for the many women outside the Weyr, though I _know_ that is not my
place now." **Nor would it have been even if I hadn't Impressed
Angdelouth.**
"Certainly for _some_ women," Hygalia agreed before taking a thoughtful
sip from her cup. "But it's easy to forget that many if not most of
those women are quite happy with their lives and don't want to be
'rescued'," as she had head some people put it.
"I could never understand women like that," Janani replied with a shake
of her head. "Thank the stars that Angdelouth chose me all those turns
ago. I couldn't have lived a life under that oppression." She snorted at the
very thought. "Were you holdbred or weyrbred Hygalia?"
"Holdbred," she replied simply.
"As was I," Janani replied, letting the conversation lull a bit between
them.
Hygalia reached for a treat, thinking it was interesting that they had
both come from a similar background, but it was obvious they had very
different views on the lives they might have lived there. "Why did you
decide to Stand?" she asked curiously.
"I _really_ wanted to become a tanner like my father, but when that was
denied to me. When the opportunity to Stand for a hatching at the Weyr
presented itself, I took it, knowing that otherwise my only future was
marriage and babies alone. Not that there is anything _wrong_ with
either of those, but I wanted more. What about you?" Janani asked
Hygalia.
That certainly explained her bitterness towards Hold life, Hygalia
thought. "I was fostered to my aunt, Lady Colara of Copper Beach Hold.
When the offer came to Stand it was her that encouraged me to try. She
wanted me to see the world."
"Being adragonback is definitely the _best_ way to see the world,"
Janani replied. "How have things been at Dragonsfall? I Impressed there,
many a Turn ago now. I know many things have changed since the last time I was
there."
"Well, I think, save for the constant change in leadership over the last
couple turns. Hopefully things will remain a bit more... permanent."
Hygalia certainly was determined to outlast a few of her predecessors,
though Faranth knew it was none of their faults for needing to leave.
The climate at Dragonsfall could be hard on those not used to it.
"Thank the Egg there are some dependable people who have been around
long enough to give me sound advice."
"Anyone I might know? I mean, it's been turns since I was at
Dragonsfall, but I did have a few friends from my days after I
Impressed." Janani was curious who Hygalia had found to be reliable
people at her old stomping grounds.
There were so few that Hygalia knew for sure had been at the Weyr for
long enough to remember her, not knowing herself exactly how long ago
Janani had left. "G'nir was there for a long time, but then also was
away for a while. As was D'ale. Kenza's always been there, I'm sure,
since she has children in the Weyr. Was U'kaiah there when you were at
Dragonsfall?"
"Oh, yes, U'kaiah was there when I was," Janani said with a hint of a
smile. It was strange that in the span of just a few days more than one
person had mentioned his name around her. It was almost like something
or someone was drawing him back into her mind, telling her to pay
attention.
"I know most of the others as well. They are very helpful. I hope I can
find a good source here at the Cove to guide me in the right direction."
"I hear you have a very competent Headwoman to help you, and Jyramika
has been here for quite some time," Hygalia said helpfully. "And of
course, I would be willing to help if there is anything I can assist you
with."
"Yes, Qorri has already been wonderful. I don't think the transition
would have been nearly as smooth without her help." Janani replied. "I
imagine
I will take you up on your offer for assistance from time to time. There
is _much_ more to being Weyrwoman than just Flights and Thread, that's
for
sure!"
"It is a bit overwhelming. Especially at first." Hygalia leaned
forward a little. "How's your queen while brooding over a Clutch."
Janani snorted, "She's so possessive, I'm lucky she even let's _me_ in
to see the eggs! Yet, Faranth forbid I'm not by her side every moment of
every day!" She shook her head though Janani was smiling. She loved
Angdelouth
and she would do whatever her dragon asked of her if it kept Angdelouth
happy. "How about yours?"
"The same, almost. I'm welcome around the eggs, but it's a struggle to
get anyone else in. I had to fight her just to get poor G'nir in while
she was Clutching!" She was sure the bronzerider would never forgive
her for that.
Janani chuckled, "Oh, I know how that can be! Some of the other riders
over the Turns have not been so welcome on the sands. Yet, sometimes,
Angdelouth can be a bit more willing to allow the rider in. Perhaps it
has to do with my own preferences there," Janani winked and filled her glass
again. "This will be her first clutch as the senior queen. I do hope it is a
good one."
"I know that feeling. I was almost reverting back to my childhood habit
of bitting my nails when Genith reached 30 eggs. I just hoped on the
Egg she'd make it to forty!" That had been a tense moment.
"I won't know for awhile yet how well things will go for Angdelouth this
time." Janani sighed, "I wish there was a way to tell sooner, for the
wait kills me nearly everytime."
"Well, by all accounts, Loseth is a strong bronze. I'm sure he flew her
well." Hygalia was too polite to ask if N'vanik had flown her equally
well.
"I do hope so." Janani sipped her drink again before asking, "Is there
anything else of interest going on among the Weyrs?" She figured Hygalia
would have more knowledge about anything else interesting going on.
"I suppose that depends on what you find interesting," Hygalia said with
a shrug. "The news seems pretty calm at the moment. The biggest news
is, of course, you." And Traelyn, but that went without saying.
"Me? Big news?" she chuckled, "This is the first time _I've_ ever been
the big news." She wasn't surprised, really. Anytime the leadership changed
at the Weyrs everyone was dying of curiosity to know what was happening.
Hygalia smiled, knowing exactly how she felt, but also well aware of
what being Weyrwoman really meant. "Well, get used to it, Janani.
You're the Senior Queen now."
