Tavia came out of the dining hall ready to flame someone, preferably
L'rak. But, she had an appointment with the Weyrwoman to talk
about her place in the wing and the next few months and she needed to
calm down.
So she walked slower than she would have under normal conditions.
Still barely at the beginning of her pregnancy she wanted to be sure
she did everything she could to prevent a miscarriage. All too soon
she came to the door that had once been Traelyn's. She lifted her
hand and knocked.
"Come," Janani called as she continued to pore over the records that
Traelyn had left. There was so much to familiarize herself with, now
that she was officially the Weyrwoman.
Tavia poked her head around the door frame then came all the way in.
"You still working?" she smiled. The sun had gone down a bit ago. She
crossed the room and sat down.
Janani looked up and smiled. "Ah, Tavia, come, sit. I could use a spot
of company." She pushed the papers away from her "There's alot more to
learn about being Weyrwoman than I had realized." She was still
smiling, "of course, I'm loving every minute of it!"
"What can I do for you tonight?" She asked her fellow rider, one she'd
befriended shortly after her arrival at DCW as they'd flown together
against the Thread that fell from the skies.
Tavia smiled at the new Weyrwoman. They'd stuck up a sort of informal
comradarie and while she was quite precise with their training in the
wing she was also relaxed and friendly on the ground.
"Well, I've got some good news and some bad news." She looked down
then back up. "I"m pregnant."
"And here I was just going to get us both a nice strong drink, but
perhaps I'd better stick to something less potent." She smiled at the
greenrider. "That is good news _and_ bad news. I've really come to
rely on you in the wing, Tavia. I don't wan to give you up, that's for
sure, but if you are happy about this pregnancy, then I am happy for
you."
"I _am_ happy about it." she said. "Though it was a little bit of a
process to get there." She really did feel sorry for leaving her in
the lurch during this transition. "I plan to work more in the
infirmary but if I can help you any other way..."
"I will miss your prowess in a Fight, that's for sure," Janani stated.
"It seems I have a plethora of hidework, far more than I realized
before I assumed this duty. Perhaps when you have some spare time,
you'd be able to pitch in an extra pair of hands." Janani paused and
poured herself some klah. Holding up the pitcher she seemed to be
asking if Tavia wanted anything.
"I know you've often helped in the Infirmary while I've been here, so
continuing with that would be a blessing for us all." Janani smiled.
"We always need extra hands there, especially after a Fall."
"Thank you" she said just before the gold rider went on. She'd been
protecting the queens since she graduated from her weyrling wing.
"Sure" she said. "Where ever I can help." She didn't know Janani very
well yet but what she did know she liked her. A Strong Weyrwoman was good
for the Weyr.
"So, how far along are you?" Janani asked, sipping her klah.
Tavia smiled, she still hadn't had her initial evaluation but she knew
about how long ago it had been and who the father was. "It's still
early, I'm in my first trimester." she said. "I should deliver
something in the fifth month."
Janani nodded and fingered the cup that sat before her. "I've often
thought about children, but it just never happened with any of the
weyrmates I had. It must not be in the cards for me," she added,
looking up at Tavia. "Is this your first, then?"
"Yes" she nodded. "And I'm not weyrmated so flying solo on this one."
She smiled a little ruefully.
"Oh, I see," Janani replied to that last comment. "Makes things a bit
more interesting that way, that's for sure. Thankfully I understand
the Weyr has great foster mothers, so once your child arrives, he or
she will have great care, because you know I'll want you back on my
wing as soon as possible."
Tavia nodded, she knew she would want to be back in the air as soon as
she was able after her alloted leave was up. "Yes," she said."I'd like
that."
"So, if you're not weyrmated, may I be so forward as to inquire who
the lucky father will be?" Janani asked.
Tavia knew the news would get around eventually so she swallowed
mentally before she said anything. "He's from another Weyr." she
started. She didn't know if all gold riders knew all the bronzes so
she just forged ahead "Babys father is U'kaiah from Dragonsfall." she
said.
"Ah yes, I know U'kaiah. I Impressed at Dragonsfall the Turn after
him. We knew each other during my early turns as a rider, but after I
transferred to River Bluff, our paths didn't cross any longer. I know
he's a well respected wingleader over at Dragonsfall, though. With
such a lineage, yours and his, your child is sure to be a great rider
someday." Janani smiled kindly at the greenrider.
"Thank you" she said with a small smile.
Janani returned her smile with kindness. "Now, how about you help me
shelve some of these hides before you run on back to the infirmary?
What do you say?"
"Sounds good," she said and stood to help get the hides put away.
