Tavia was tired. She didn't feel like she should be, it hadn't been a
particularly difficult day. She was thankful that she could just relax
with her friend tonight though. She normally looked forward to a
training day but she was just feeling out of sorts. Then it occurred
to her, she hoped she wasn't coming down with something. She arrived
at her destination and knocked on the door.
"Come in!" Ranari grinned from ear to ear when she saw her friend.
"Where the bloody shards have you been keeping yourself these days,
girl? I've missed you. Come on in, glass of white or red?" The
plump woman held up an empty glass and indicated to the two unopened
bottles of wine before her.
"Sorry I haven't been around but with Sawauth's flight and the
aftermath I've just been feeling a bit antisocial." she grimaced.
"Nothing against you of course." she added. She looked at the two
bottles. "Probably the white," she said. "Red seems to give me a
headache these days."
"Yes, well, it's white wine weather anyways," her friend replied,
pouring both of them a glass and handing Tavia one before settling
down on the couch. "So where have you been keeping yourself?"
"Oh here and there" she said as she took the glass. She sucked in her
breath as she reached across and her arm brushed her breast. Man that
was tender and she hadn't seen U'kaiah or anyone else for that matter
in more than a sevenday. She frowned but took a sip of the wine. Her
eyes cleared "Thats nice Ranari!" she said looking at the glass.
"Of course, do you think I'd give my best friend dribble?" She did
raise her eyebrows at Tavia's hiss just a moment before, though. "You
okay?"
"Yeah" she said "Just don't feel right lately, like I'm coming down
with something." she sipped at the wine and smiled at the other woman.
"A little tender is all, you know... like when you've been well laid."
"What a minute, let me get this right. You feel like you could be
getting sick but you also feel like you've just have the best sex of
your life? Am I missing something?" Ranari grinned at her friend,
more than a bit confused.
Tavia just looked at her friend puzzled by her sudden intensity. "I'm
tired and cranky," she said "my breasts are sore, yeah like I've just
had..." her eyes popped open "healer heal yourself!" she exclaimed
"Faranth! do you think?"
Her friend sat forward, looking concerned. "When was your last
period? You don't think...do you?" That was the last thing Tavia
needed, right now. Ranari sighed heavily.
She closed her eyes for a moment and thought counting the days on her
fingers, "it was just after Sawauth's flight." she started. Then a
little over a sevenday later is when I visited..." she sighed. "I'm
late." she said softly "and there's just one possibility..." She'd
thought about visiting Sh'dori, they'd had a nice time after her
flight, but hadn't made contact with him. She shook her head and
looked at Ranri. "Maybe I'm just a little late. Happens to everyone,
right?"
Ranari nodded. "Yeah..it does. The thing is, has it ever happened to you?"
She looked accusingly at her friend like it was all her fault.
"Yeah... once before." She hung her head and screwed up her face.
"Shards!"
Ranari leaned forward and put her arm around Tavia. "Now before you
get upset, why don't you go see the Dolphins? They'll be able to tell
you for sure. Or maybe," and her voice trailed off a bit before
continuing, "maybe just spend some time /between/ and you won't have
to know for sure." She pressed the girl's glass against her lips.
"Here, drink you, you need it."
Tavia sat there thinking for a long moment. "Did that the other time,
just as soon as I realized." This time though just seemed a little
different to her. She knew him better. As much fun as he was in bed he
was also a good father to Kaiafel. "I want to think about it more this
time." she sat back and half smiled. There were a lot of brats in the
Weyr who couldn't name their fathers but could only take a good guess.
"I'll have to visit the Dolphins." she lifted her glass for another
sip. "Wonder what he'll think."
"Hmm" Ranari reached out and took Tavia's glass. "If that's what you
want to do, then no more of this!" She stood up and got the girl a
glass of her son's redfruit juice. "There you go."
She was shocked when her friend ripped the wineglass away from her
mouth. Her eyes popped open and then she giggled when her hand was
filled with a glass of redfruit juice. "Alright, alright!" she said.
"I'll get to the Dolphins and find out, now don't mother me."
