Description: He catches her on her way to the Feast after the Hatching.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 13, day 6 of Turn 5
Notes: Mentioned: Solieira, K'sedel
It was her moment and no one could mess it up. The eggs had hatched. The
dragonets had been healthy Orlaith was resting as her hatchlings were fed
and brought to their wallows. She hadn't had a chance to change while
the dragons hummed and the eggs cracked. After a trip to her weyr, she
wore something more appropriate. Heading for the festivities, she knew
Solieira had plenty of help. **I wonder who came...**
"Ah, there you are," a voice called out. J'ren trotted to catch up to the
Weyrwoman, a smile stretching over his face. "It was a great hatching. A
fine bunch of weyrlings to add to our ranks. I look forward to seeing
them develop."
"Me too." She slowed down for a moment, grateful for someone to walk with.
"Which one was your favorite?" Smiling, the goldrider thought of the ones
that came to mind for her.
"There was a sturdy looking brown that looked very promising. Seemed to
really know what he wanted." J'ren commented with a thoughtful
expression. "Did you see that wingspan?"
"Wait..is that the one that impressed to the crafter boy?" She couldn't
keep them all straight in her head and she wouldn't try to.
"Yes, the woodcrafter." J'ren had taken a liking to the boy even before
the hatching. It was good to see a nice, strong brown on him. He'd keep
a close watch on that one, see how he did. Perhaps he would be a good
addition to the wing. It wasn't necessarily a guarantee that he would be,
but he was certainly promising. "What about you? Did one in particular
catch your eye?"
"Not this time around. Then again, we'll see how their personalities develop
as they go through training. Once you see how they're different..that's when
they stand out to me." Rhosyn wasn't the mothering type so it was hard for
her to connect individually.
"Things could turn out differently than you expect," J'ren commented almost
absently. He'd seen it before, boys that he thought might do real well in
the wing, only to feel that they fit better elsewhere when graduation drew
nigh. "You ready for the festivities?"
"Indeed. If Solieira got my requests in for the feast, things will be fine."
Rhosyn was looking forward to that bit of it, as well as gloating. Her old
Weyrwoman couldn't fault her now. She had done her duty for her Weyr and
given them plenty of eggs.
"Do I get the pleasure of another dance with you?" J'ren asked, daring
enough to wink at the Weyrwoman. "Or will I be forced to pine after such a
pleasure?"
"Well that depends on how many people are here who wish to monopolize my
time." Rhosyn's first role at an event like this was hostess. She
recognized that. Still, she wouldn't let her duties take up the entire
evening. "And on how much my feet hurt."
"If your feet hurt, take off your shoes," J'ren suggested, glancing down so
he could get a glimpse of them. "I don't think anyone will notice and
you'll be a lot more comfortable." Not that she'd take him up on his
suggestion.
"Oh they would notice. Believe me, they would notice." She shook her head,
wondering at how people could be so hidebound sometimes. "And then I'd get
to hear it again, how I am some heathen with no manners who enjoys running
around the Weyr naked. Of course I don't give a shell, but..I hate hearing
it all the time."
"You, a heathen? I beg to differ!" J'ren couldn't help but bark out a
laugh. "Strongwilled, yes. Heathen, no. Notice or not, if it makes you
comfortable, do it. The last thing we need is an uncomfortable Weyrwoman,
especially on her big day."
"Eh I'll be fine. The big part is done. Now I just say hello, well met, and
eat." The last part of her sentence seemed to make her perk up. Rhosyn had
reached the entrance to the Lower Caverns at this point and she waited for
her eyes to adjust to the glows as she walked. "Did you notice who all
came?" She hadn't had time to check the dragons on the heights and Orlaith
was sleeping.
"I noticed quite a few before the eggs actually started cracking." J'ren
rattled off names of various Weyrleaders and even a few Holders; faces he
had recognized. "Of course most, if not the entire, Weyr. There's always
at least a few from surrounding holds, coming to see family or friends and
whether or not they impress and the like."
She began to hear the music and they reached the entrance. Rhosyn looked
over the crowd that had filled the dining cavern. They had set up the
trestle tables as well as the dance floor. The dais was there and she could
see K'sedel. "Thank you for walking me, J'ren. I've got to go shake hands
now."
"It was a pleasure." J'ren took the Weyrwoman's hand and planted a polite
kiss upon the back of it. "I do hope I will have the chance to dance with
you later. If not, I shall suppose I will simply pine." He gave her a broad
grin, before turning to let her go her way and plunge into the crowd that had
gathered for the feast.
