Tavia

Tavia

Tavia tossed and turned all night and got hardly any sleep. The day
before had been stressful and she wasn't sleeping well. For the life
of her she couldn't really put a finger on why. She even pulled the
pillow out from under her head and threw it across the room in
frustration. It wasn't until the next morning that she saw the
explosion of feathers all over her room. But even setting that aside
she still didn't feel good. She cleaned up the feathers as best she
could but the ticking had burst at the seams and she wasn't about to
try and sew it back together. So rather than that she just ripped it
to shreds. It made her feel better but now she was missing a pillow
and had instead a pile of feathers.

Then she remembered. When she'd gone with the young bronzerider to
transport the Lord and Lady Holder she'd been promised a gift and had
never collected. A small smile lit her face and after she'd dressed
she decided to visit the headwoman. Once she was near Qorri's office,
she stuck her head in the door. "Good morning" she said as brightly as
she could manage. "Do you have a moment?"

Looking up from her list of inventories, the Headwoman glanced first
to the knots and then the face. She couldn't remember all their names,
but she could remember faces. "Morning, greenrider. What can I do for
you?"

She smiled and walked in the door. "I don't know if you remember me,"
she started, "But I ran an errand for you at the last hatching?"

"Oh? Your name?" Qorri went digging for her list. She always kept a list
of everything. That way, when people came back and said whatever, she
had something to work from.

"Yes, Ma'am." she said, "I'm Tavia."

"Ahha! Yes, you did pickups." She brought her head back up, knowing she
was right. The list didn't lie.

She was relieved the Headwoman seemed to remember after all this time.
At first she hadn't come since there wasn't really anything she
needed. She'd thought by now the woman would have forgotten her offer.

"Yes," she said with a bigger smile. "We picked up the Lord and Lady
from Emerald Falls."

"So now, what brings you to me then, Tavia?" Qorri began to get curious.

She felt a bit uncomfortable bringing it up after the time that had
passed but there was no help for it. "Well, you had mentioned I could
come back after the task to pick something," she said hoping the
headwoman would remember.

"Mmmhm, and?" she prompted, hoping Tavia didn't need something drastic
on short notice.

Tavia felt slightly embarrassed and it probably showed. "I need a new
pillow," she said. "Mine kind of exploded. There were feathers
everywhere and the ticking is a mess." She gave a nervous laugh. "I
doubt a weaver could put it back together again. So, I thought... that
is if you have any handy."

"You thought I could give you a new one?" Qorri supplied easily. She
was quiet, but then she finally nodded. "Of course, providing the mess
from the old one was taken care of hm?"

"Oh that's already done headwoman," she said. Tavia might be relaxed in
her relationships but she was not messy. Her quarters were clean and
well maintained. She preferred to think of them as organized. She
always knew where to find whatever she wanted.

"Wonderful. Allright, do you have a preference? Rush filled, cotton stuffed, firm, soft.." Qorri got up and began to lead the way out of her office and to the storage caverns where those things were kept.

Tavia smiled. "Cotton stuffed and soft," she said. She loved nothing
better than scrunching her pillow into exactly the right shape.

Her keys jingled from where they were on her belt as she walked, giving an
advance warning to everyone else that she was coming. Scurrying and scuttling occurred, to get out of her way. Secretly, she enjoyed that. "And
you'll need a case for it, I assume?"

She followed along as they walked. "Oh yes that would be wonderful."

They reached the storage cavern that Qorri wanted and she entered it, picking up a glow basket that was kept by the door. She uncovered the glows, then led Tavia carefully inside. "Stay close to me."

Tavia drew closer to the headwoman. She wasn't unfamiliar with these
caves, having been raised in the Weyr. But that also meant she knew
what could be lurking in the storage room.

Qorri knew exactly where she wanted to look and it didn't take long before the women were in the section where shelves held pillows of all shapes and sizes. She grabbed a cotton one down and handed it to the greenrider. "What
do you think?"

Tavia pulled it to her and squished it to her head then handed it back. "Too hard. Do you have something softer?"

"Aye let's see.." Qorri put that one back, then used her hand to feel. Thinking she had the right one this time, she offered it to Tavia.

She pulled this one close and just holding it she didn't want to let
it go. "Oh yes," she sighed. "That's lovely." She smiled at the
headwoman "Perfect," she said.

"Allright, here's a case," Qorri said as she grabbed down a piece of sewn fabric. "So that should do you. If you need anything else, just let me know. Now, let's find our way out of the maze." She led the way again, grateful for the glows.

Tavia took the case for the pillow and hugged it to her along with her
new acquisition. She followed the headwoman out of the storage cavern.
"Thank you so much."
