Since Orlaith had finally risen, Rhosyn was no longer on edge. Her place at River Bluff was secure. Knowing that, she decided it was high time she made good on a promise. Sending a candidate to fetch Angshel for her, she waited for him on the Rim. She looked to the left where her big dragon was holding court in the southern sun. Orlaith fairly glowed with
the prospect of impending motherhood. She was healthy and it showed.
When Angshel rounded the corner and saw the mighty dragon his mouth dropped open. He had been pestering the Candidate walking with him with questions. Not knowing how one was chosen to Stand for a possible Impression, he was fascinated to actually meet someone who might get a chance to be the lifemate of one of these incredible beings. Since
the last sevenday he had been allowed more freedom to see the Weyr. With the worst of his injuries behind him he had jumped at the chance to meet the Weyrwoman again, and to see much more of the Weyr.
She caught them approaching and nodded. "Good day then." Rhosyn thanked the candidate and dismissed him, watching Angshel. "How are you doing today?"
He could only nod, a bit. The queen, in all her splendor, had him completely speechless. She was beautiful! He never
noticed the boy he had just a few minutes ago been bugging to death with all his questions leave. He barely noticed the Weyrwoman. How could_anything_be so utterly and completely magnificent?
Rhosyn noticed his awe and smiled to herself. Happy to let him have his moment, she was quiet until he wanted to speak again.
Realizing he was taking an important woman's time with his gawking, Angshel tore his eyes from the queen and said, "Good morning, Weyrwoman." His eyes went straight back to the huge dragon.
"Good morning, Angshel. You're looking better." The goldrider didn't mind admiration of what she thought was the most beautiful creature in the world.
"Ah, thank you," he said shyly. It was kind of her to say so. He did feel better, these days, since all his internal injuries were
mostly healed. And the Healers had said his arm would only be in a cast for another three sevendays or so.
"You're welcome. So have you thought about what you want to do when you're done healing?" She was fishing. If he didn't want to craft or something else, she could find him a staff job or perhaps foster him until he found his way.
"Could I...I mean...would it be okay if I choose dragon healing?" To be around the dragons all the time would be beyond
anything he could ever have imagined for himself. Of course, Impressing one would never be allowed for someone like him but helping them with injuries would be enough. More than enough. He had watched the Healers with the dragons this last Fall and was amazed. He stood quietly, waiting for the Weyrwoman's words.
"Aye you could but it's one of those crafts where...if you don't impress you usually don't get very far." Rhosyn frowned, wanting
him to understand that.
"Impress? Really?" He visibly deflated. "Well, that won't happen. But then again, I didn't expect to get far, I suppose. Maybe
I could just help the dragonhealers? I'd love to just do that. And it'd still be beyond any dreams I ever had."
"I don't know. That'd be a question to ask them. The Headwoman should be able to set up a meeting for you." She would mention it to her.
"Okay," he said in a quiet voice.
"But everything else is okay?" As she spoke, the great queen took her leave from her suitors and actually came to land near Rhosyn
and the boy. Orlaith watched him quietly, her eyes spinning a content green.
The boy could only manage a small squeak. The queen was larger than anything he could have ever imagined. How did something so huge exist?
"She's beautiful, hm?" Rhosyn stepped forward. Orlaith's head came down so her rider could scratch her eyeridges. "She'll be egg heavy
soon and unable to fly for a bit."
"She's more than beautiful," he said in a wistful voice. A part of him wished that boys could Impress golds.
"Come here, Angshel. Let her see you." Orlaith had been aware of the boy's possible future as a candidate and was curious about him for that reason.
"Oh, okay." He timidly moved in front of the queen, confused as to why such a creature as her would be curious about a drudge like him.
She would never be a Searchdragon, but the gold did watch him for a bit. Her big head came down, green whirling eyes focused on him.
She nudged him once, then Orlaith brought her head back up, ready to do something else. "Step back now. She's going to leave," Rhosyn warned.
He was so awed by her touching him that, upon the Weyrwoman's words, he fell back onto his rear. But he never felt any jolt or embarrassment,
all his thoughts were on the huge gold as she flew. A queen dragon,_the_queen dragon had touched him! Incredible!
Heading off into the direction of the feeding grounds, Orlaith watched as the other dragons got out of her way. Picking her target,
she grabbed a herdbeast and took it off to a corner somewhere to eat out of sight. She didn't like people to see her all messy.
"You okay?" Moving forward, Rhosyn offered him a hand.
He nodded. "I can't believe she touched me! Do you ever need help with her care?" That question was out of his mouth before he
could censor it. Clapping his hand over his mouth, he looked at her terrified.
"Sometimes, but the candidate girls usually volunteer." Rhosyn almost laughed at his reaction. He looked like he'd been
stealing cookies from the jar.
"Oh." Today just wasn't his day, was it? But then, of course, what else would he expect? He was a nobody, after all. And a queen dragon_had_not
only been on the ground with him but had touched him. That was more, much more, than he could have ever expected just a month ago.
"Well I wanted to check on you and let you see Orlaith. Now, I better let you get back to things while I go make sure that my fostermothers
are doing as they should." Rhosyn needed to see which brats had decided to apprentice and which women could take on more children.
"Oh, okay." This was a day to remember!
