Description: G'nir asks P'nal to be his Wingsecond.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 12, day 1 of Turn 5
G'nir had been looking for a new Wingsecond from the day after he became the Weyrleader. He didn't want another bronzerider, he didn't want to constantly watch his back against a rival. A brownrider was another matter. He just didn't see them as competition. He had no problems dealing with brownriders, he could relax around them.
He went methodically through all the suitable brownriders before settling to interview a few. Out of those few he had now made his choice. He sent P'nal an invitation to his office.
The brownrider was curious. **Did I make it?** Of course there were plenty of bronzes that wanted the job and he knew that. P'nal headed down to see G'nir, trying to tamp down his anxiety. He just wanted to _know_. Checking himself to make sure his sweater and trousers were straight and his knots weren't lopsided, he gave a quick rap on the door and waited.
"Get in, P'nal," G'nir called and leaned back into a relaxed stance.
Entering, he stopped in front of the desk and waited to see what the Weyrleader had to say. "My duty to you, sir."
"My duty to you, P'nal," G'nir replied and gestured him to take a seat.
The brownrider sat in one fluid movement. Adjusting himself, he glanced around the office once before he focused again on the bronzerider.
"Congratulations, P'nal. I've chosen you to be my wingsecond, if you are willing to accept the position," G'nir went straight to business.
It took P'nal a moment to realize what he was saying. **I did it. I got it.** He blinked and looked back at him. "I'm honored sir."
G'nir just smiled and nodded. "I liked what I saw in your records."
"Thank you." He went to his next thought. "Would you like to talk about what my duties will be then?" He thought that was a good place to start.
"You're my second, if for some reason, I'm unable to lead the wing, you must be ready to step in for me. You will deal with the minor disciplinary infractions. You are responsible for the physical fitness of the riders as well as assigning some of the duties. We will coordinate the drills together. In Fall, you are to keep an eye on the left flank and I have the right flank. The wingthird makes sure the switch between greenriders in mid-Fall goes smoothly. Since I'm the Weyrleader, more of the wing's day to day business will fall on your shoulders than in an average Fighting wing. I will concentrate on the more broader aspect of making the whole Weyr function. Can you handle it?" G'nir gave the brownrider a challenging look. Of course, he would have not picked him, if he believed he couldn't handle it.
"I would never have asked to be considered if I thought I couldn't. Are there any current issues I need to know about?" P'nal didn't exactly want to hit the ground running. He liked to be prepared before he walked into something.
"Just the preparations for the hatching," G'nir said. He smiled. "I better warn you, I don't believe in unnecessary praise. In my case, no news is good news. If you do something wrong, you will hear from me. If you don't hear anything, you can safely presume that you're doing fine."
"I understand. Do I need to see anyone about getting access to the wing's records or is that already taken care of?" He needed to study hard to be on
point and prepared indeed.
"Here," G'nir gave him a small hide. "Give this to the Weyrharper and then it's been taken care of."
P'nal took it, nodding. "Well I don't think I can think of anything else. I'll just have to go through whatever is left in the office." He frowned, knowing that might be a chore.
"I have no idea if the previous 'Second left a mess or not," G'nir said.
"It's allright. I didn't have any other plans for today, anyhow. Is there a schedule for wing meetings and drills in there though?" That was important since it would dictate when P'nal would first meet the wing with his new knots.
"Then next wingmeeting is tomorrow at ten. Meet me in my office at nine and we'll go through things together. Until then, you'll have time to get settled into your new office," G'nir replied.
"Aye, sir. Well then I won't bother you anymore. I'm sure you have plenty to do. Once again, thanks for the opportunity." P'nal stepped back and
gave a small salute, which he thought proper for the occasion. "Dragonmen must fly.." he left the other part off, waiting for G'nir to give the customary response.
"When thread is in the sky," G'nir continued.
Leaving to organize his new office, P'nal thought to himself **Well, brownrider, here we go!**
From his ledge, Jodeth gave an echoing bugle.
