Characters: Rhosyn, J'ren
Description: Rhosyn decides to speak with a different type of bronzerider after her
run-in with M'galec.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 11, day 28 of Turn 5
Notes: Mentioned: K'sedel
After hearing what had happened to U'das, she found herself curious to see
if J'ren was okay with handling the wing. Rhosyn regarded the young rider
with a sense of ambivalence, though he was curious to her. He was close in
turns with her and attractive. Despite K'sedel's recent success, she knew he
wouldn't always be around. **It's important to cultivate the proper
relationships** she recited in her head. **It's pleasant talking with him anyway** she
admitted, wandering down to the drill yard where she guessed he might be
from all reports.
J'ren was there, drills having just been finished. He was surrounded by
those in the wing, giving last minute insights, perhaps, or instructions.
Then they were dismissed and the dragonriders disbanded. J'ren pulled his
gloves from where he had tucked them beneath his arm and turned, only to
find himself facing a familiar face. "Weyrwoman." He greeted, a smile
striking across his features. "Good to see you. I hope you are well."
"Oh I'm fine. Came to see how you were doing," she answered easily. **Aye he
is good looking and easy to talk to. But is that it? No..something extra**
J'ren didn't stand out to her. He was a hardworking, good rider. For Rhosyn,
that wasn't enough.
"Doing all right. Keeping things together." J'ren nodded toward the
exiting riders, all who were eager to get out of their gear and get changed.
"Thinking about some things that might help tighten up the wing a bit more.
I'm glad to hear that you're doing all right. How's that lovely gold of
yours?"
"As big as a Hold, but that's as to be expected." Orlaith was definitely
egg-heavy and the whole Weyr knew it. The big dragon wasn't being too
irritable about her situation, but she wasn't being the best about it
either. It was hard not being able to fly when she wanted to. "In a few
sevendays, that'll all change anyway." **And then I will begin my nights in
the hatching grounds**
"It's getting closer now." J'ren reached up and rubbed his jaw. "Any
thoughts as to how many eggs she'll lay? A good many I dare say. It was a
good flight."
"I suspect it'll be a good clutch myself, by her size alone." She didn't
like to speculate much when it came to eggs. "Would you like to walk with me
or did you have somewhere to go?"
"I can always spare a few moments for my Weyrwoman," J'ren assured her. He
clapped his gloves against his thigh to rid them of the dust that was purred
up when the dragons came in for a landing. "Lead on, I shall follow. Is
there something amiss?"
"No, of course not. It's just nice to have someone to talk to sometimes who
isn't decades older than me." She gave a smile as she thought of K'sedel.
Despite their working relationship, she thought of him as a father figure in
most ways. "Tell me, J'ren, where did you come from?"
"From here, actually." J'ren swept his hand across and indicated the Weyr.
"Born and raised at River Bluff. It's always been my home." He slowed his
step to make sure he didn't get too far ahead of the shorter goldrider.
"You're from Vista Point, aren't you?"
"Not originally, but I've spent most of my turns there. I was born a
holder." She knew people never expected that of her.
If that tidbit surprised J'ren, he didn't show it, just nodded. "Musta been
quite a shock for you, going from hold to Weyr. How long ago were you
Searched?"
"I wasn't. I was fostered at the Weyr." She wondered if his reaction would
be like the others'. They all thought that strange indeed.
"Really? Interesting. That doesn't happen very often, though I've heard of
it occasionally." J'ren gave her a quick grin. "My mother was fostered to
the Weyr herself. Obviously you both were meant to be here."
"Once Orlaith picked me, I was stuck anyway. Not that I'd be good at a craft
I don't think." Rhosyn had never shown any inclination to be a crafter,
though she hadn't the time regardless.
"You don't think? Did you ever try to go into a craft?" J'ren seemed a bit
amused by Rhosyn's description of herself. "Or did you know you were just
destined to be a dragonrider?"
"Well..before I went to the Weyr..my family, we were farmers and such. I
loved runners. I might have gone into that I guess. Nowadays, I never have
time to ride, though." She frowned, remembering those days and the simple
joy of it.
"I enjoy a good ride, but it's been a long time since I've been on a
runner," J'ren
admitted. "I probably would have wound up being a foster father or working
in the creche had I not Impressed."
"Really? Kids?" That threw her for a loop. "I haven't really been around
many kids since I left the Hold, like smaller ones."
J'ren's face cracked with a grin. "Yep. Kids. Enjoyed kids. Used to take
care of..." He paused and then shook his head. "Of other kids when I was
younger. But then I Impressed, so here I am. I like kids. I've got twins,
myself."
"Oh..well congrats." Rhosyn didn't plan on any of her own. So far, she had
been lucky and had avoided that particular pain-in-the-rear.
"Heh, they're about eighteen months old now, running all over the place."
J'ren shrugged off Rhosyn's rather blase manner. "So when was the last time
you got to ride on a runner?"
"At least a couple turns ago.." She couldn't exactly remember. Rhosyn had
gotten so busy. There just hadn't been time.
"Do you even rest on your restdays?" J'ren eyed the Weyrwoman in a
critical, but friendly way. He had a feeling he knew what the answer to
that would be. "Maybe we should go riding together some time. Get away for
a while, relax. And you'd get a good laugh out of it."
"Of course I do..though not so much when Orlaith is doing something with
eggs. It's hard to sleep until they hatch." Rhosyn had faith in her queen to
keep them safe, but sometimes things happened and it made her nervous. "I'll
take you up on that when I can."
"After the Hatching then?" J'ren asked, his eyes twinkling merrily. "And
then you can see how bad I am at riding."
"Sure but you can't embarrass me. It wouldn't do for the whole Weyr to find
out the Weyrwoman's escort falls off his runner." Rhosyn couldn't help but
laugh at the picture it made in her head and at the innuendo.
"I'll do my best. You might need to give me some pointers." She had
laughed
and J'ren called that a success, echoing her laugh with his own. "The last
time I was on a runner...it's rather fuzzy."
"Got knocked on your arse, did you?" Rhosyn had taken a few falls in her
life, but that was the same of any real runnerperson.
J'ren reached up and rubbed his chin, his eyes twinkling merrily.
"Well...like I said...it's all rather fuzzy." Then he winked.
"Do try to remember before the day comes. Can't have you being all rusty and
breaking a leg or something else vitally important." Envisioning some of
J'ren's other parts, she kept walking.
"Yes, that would be very bad." J'ren chuckled, clasping his hands behind his
back. "Wouldn't do to have the second get injured not long after the leader.
And
it would surely be a great inconvenience to you."
"Well of course. Faranth, I can't be leading two wings at once. And then
what will the other Weyrs think? Boy, Rhosyn has them dropping like
trundlebugs over there at River Bluff. The bronzeriders just can't keep up
with her.." A
sneaky look came over her then as she thought about it.
J'ren's grin took on a mischievous tinge to it. "Oh yes, wouldn't want
anyone to think that of our Weyrwoman. It wouldn't do."
"Well J'ren I'm sure I have something I was supposed to be doing. So I'll
leave you be to go and clean up. I will take you up on that offer someday,
though."
Rhosyn stopped walking, watching the Star Stones for a moment.
"Of course, Weyrwoman. Clear skies." The last was murmured in a much
softer, but quite sincere tone. J'ren watched Rhosyn watch the Star Stones, then
turned and left her to her duties - only to take care of his own.
