Tavia

Tavia

The ride back to Dolphin Cove was uneventful. Ranari's little guy was
experienced in this type of trip. He chattered about his visit with
his da and Tavia was so pleased with herself that she almost forgot
the odd look she'd gotten from the young bronze rider outside
U'kaiah's office. They landed in Tavia and Sawauth's weyr and there
was Ranari waiting for them.

"Rhihand! How was the trip?" his mother exclaimed as the small boy
slid off the dragon with a similar ease. His father was a dragon
rider, so the child was no stranger to the huge beasts. Ranari waved
a hello to the girl on the green. "Do come in, Tavia. I've got some
white wine and some cheese, are you hungry?"

It never ceased to amaze her how weyrbrats could slither over dragons
so easily. "I'm famished." she said with a smile. She had to tell
someone soon the last ten days had been almost torture with not
telling a single soul. "Wine and cheese is just what I need." She
hummed as she stripped off Sawauth's riding harness and hung it on its
rack. The lovely green took off to catch the last rays of the sun on
the heights.

Ranari found a clean glass for the wine and cut some of the cheese for
her son, before he sat down to draw a picture of Sawauth. Reaching
over, she handed him the green waxes before sitting down with her
friend. "So, how are you? And before I forget, thank you _so_much
for taking the boy to see his da."

"Oh sure!" she said waving off the thanks. "and I'm great!" she
grinned and pulled her glass up for a sip of the light crisp wine. She
broke off a piece of the cheese and struggled a moment with the idea
of telling her friend what had really been going on.
"Do you remember when I took him over I told you I met an old friend
there and we went for klah?"

"Yes, go on!"

"Well this old friend..." she stopped for a moment. "You can't tell
anyone anything about this. Promise?"

"Wait a moment..." Ranari went over to her son. "Sweetie, would you
like to go see your nan? She asked for you earlier."
The boy nodded enthusiasticly. His mother led him to the door and saw
him off, as he ran down the hallway to his nan's. Turning back, she
went over and fell into the couch, picking up her glass on the way.

"Okay, sorry but he's at that age where bits of this conversation will
come out where and when you don't want it to. So where were you? Oh,
I was about to make a promise to you, right?" She teased her friend.
Holding a hand over her heart, she said, "okay, I promise."

Tavia laughed but inside she was totally serious. "Do you remember
the bronze rider from Dragonsfall that was involved with Traelyn?" She
still hesitated for another moment. She knew she trusted Ranari but
this was big. "Ok, well it was him, and we didn't have klah... if you
know what I mean." She smiled a wicked little smile. "He was every bit
as good as I remember."

"I didn't think you had, just from the way you were walking the other
day. That wasn't the walk of a girl that's just had a nice cup of
klah." Ranari gave a knowing nod. "So...details please!"

She chuckled "Oh we went back to his weyr and had a very nice time.
Then before I picked up Rhihand today I looked him up again and...
well lets just say we got down to it on his desk." By this time she
was laughing. "The crazy thing is, there was a young rider outside the
door there at the end. Who knows what he heard... I'm not the quietest
person in the world." she shook her head. "You should have seen his
face when I came out.. Faranth knows, I was _not_ the person he was
expecting to see."

"Yeah, but it's Dragonsfall, they have to be used to this sort of
thing!" She giggled, thinking about the poor boy. "So, how did you
leave it? Need my boy for an excuse to go back for third's?"

She smiled and took another drink "Oh, it's very casual and that's
just the way I like it. No expectations, just fun." she reached for
some cheese, "He wants me to spend the night sometime but, no, I don't
need an excuse. We aren't weyrlings after all. Just don't want to hurt
Trae, they were quite close once."

As she thought about it, she'd had a fling with the Weyrwoman's
current brown rider lover. Seemed she and Trae had the same taste in
men. Of course a gold rider was always much more attractive to their
prospects than a mere green rider, but that didn't really bother her
in the least.

"Trae'll be just fine. She's not with him now, right? So he's fair
game, in my book." Leaning over, Ranari topped up Tavia's glass. If her
friend wanted a good time, it was nobody's buisness anyway.

"Yeah" she agreed and held out her glass for a refill. "Not like I
want to keep him or anything. He's just fun for now." Tavia liked the
ones who understood that she wasn't interested in anything long term.

"Exactly, just string him along. Of course, you could be in my shoes,
with a small child underfoot and men running a mile when they think
you_may_just want to get a bit serious!" She lifted her glass and
toasted her friend and her freedom.

"Actually I think we're _both_ stringing each other along." she
chucked. "And don't cut yourself short. Rhihand is a good kid. He
makes me think about having one of my own.

"Yeah?" This was news to her.

Tavia laughed. "Oh don't hold your breath," she quipped. "I said
_think_ not want."

"Yeah, I thought so. They aren't all sweetness and light, kids. At
least your dragon is always pretty reasonable..." She held up the
bottle to ask if Tavia wanted more.

"I don't know," Tavia said. "The last five turns have been full of
both the infirmary and fighting Thread. There hasn't been time to think
of anything else." she smiled and tossed her head. "Maybe the next
time Sawauth rises I'll catch and carry. Think you'd want to foster
for me?"

"Oh great, I_finially_get back to being a bit free and you want to saddle
me with a little one!" She grinned and took a sip of her wine. "Ah,
sure, why not? If you really want one, that is."

Tavia laughed "No don't worry, I would dream of pushing anything on
you, besides we'll have to see if it happens. I'm not going out of my
way for it."
