The Harpers were in fine form tonight, thought Azia. Any of the dragon folk who could fiddle, drum and/or strum had filled out the group to perform the fast and frantic dance music that she so loved. Her full shirt whirling, she floated across the line, eyeing a handsome man sitting my himself. He looked lonely. When the music stopped, the song over, she skipped away from her rather borish bronzerider partner and found that man.
"Is this seat taken," she asked, not bothering to wait for a reply before
sitting down with a laugh beside him. He was even nicer looking close up.
And such hazel eyes! The smile she gave him was genuine.
"It seems it is now," K'deren responded. Her smile was worth noting, he
thought. "Did you tire yourself out dancing?"
"Oh, yes, I'm a fool for a good fiddler." She relaxed and looked more
closely at him. Not that he was hard on the eyes. Quite the opposite.
Tapping at the bottle of wine on the table, she asked, "mind if I take a
glass?"
"Be my guest," he said, gently pushing the bottle in her direction. "I'm
K'deren, Donneth's rider."
"Ah, cheers for that," she said, pouring herself a glass. Holding it over
his, she asked, "would you like a top up? I'm Azia, by the way. Yennith's lifemate."
"Well met Azia," came the reply as he lifted his glass. "You a new
arrival?" she wasn't in his wing, he'd know about that with all the hides he looked at each day.
"In from River's Buff," she said, clinking her glass to his. "So what's it like here? Good band, at least, eh?"
"They aren't bad, but maybe we should wait until the harpers come up here
and play." He glanced at her again. "River Bluff, that explains the tan
then."
"Yeah, well," she laughed and looked her her bare arms. "I had a lot of
nice little greenrider boys to go sunning with. So, you Impressed here, or somewhere else?"
"Bet you met my brother among those nice greenriding boys," K'deren grinned. "I grew up here, well Thayan Peak, impressed here and stayed. Unlike the rest of my family."
"Oh, really? Who was your brother?" She filed away the information about
Thayan Peak to mull over later.
"R'sedel, and my other brother K'reyel."
"Oh, yes, I may have known him. More important, I also know your father."
Her eyes twinkled in amusement.
"Everyone at River Bluff knows my father," K'deren said with a smile. "It's that big bronze dragon and those knots that give it away."
"Yes, those bossy bronzes, they sort of give the game away, don't they?
Nothing like our oh so demure browns and greens."
"Which isn't to say that there aren't benefits to riding brown or green."
"Well, yes," Azia laughed, "I don't think I'm bronze material!"
"Although could you imagine if that ever happened?"
The dark haired woman laughed in earnest. "Can you imagine?" she managed to get out, "the faces on the Lord Holders if their Weyrleader got off his
dragon and 'he' was a she?"
"Or the 'Weyrwoman' turned out to be a man?" K'deren wasn't known amongst
his wing for his sense of humour, it was something close friends and family saw mainly.
"I knew a few green boys that would have made a 'fine' Weyrwoman!"
"But could you imagine my brother R'sedel?"
"Oh dear...yes!"
K'deren laughed, she was easy to talk to. "Or maybe not, he seems to have
not inherited the diplomacy that our father has."
"Oh dear, he'd probably mess up the tithes, send the Candidates to the wrong place to be Impressed and..I don't know." The band had started up a fast tune. Azia took a sip of her wine and asked, "K'deren, would you like to dance?"
"Why not?" He held out his hand to the greenrider.
