G'waren traced a pattern in the beaded sweat of his pint, musing over
the sweep ride of this day. This was the most deserved pint in history,
after the endless miles of forest that he and his beautiful Manarth
had flown. The wind had been harsh today, blowing the blue about and
stealing the warmth from his body.
Looking up, he spied a face from his wing, D'ale, the newcomer to
U'kaiah's bunch. And someone in his position, a rider with a young
son on the Sands this time around. He smiled, hoping to catch the
man's eye. It was always good to make the new people welcome.
D'ale turned from the doorway to pick up a drink then looked around
the room. It was amazing how much the Weyr could change in three
turns. Then he saw a face from his wing looking in his direction. He
lifted his chin in acknowledgement and moved toward the man's table.
"Hey, did you have sweep duty as well?"
D'ale smiled at the mans question and nodded, "Yes they sent me out
over Amber HIlls Hold. Pretty place." He took a drink and placed the
pint back down on the table and leaned on his forearms. "Where did you
end up?" he asked.
"Hmm it is," the older man mused, likewise taking a deep draft of his
pint. "I've been over the vines of the Vitner. Pretty this time of
the turn." He smiled, thinking of the harvest to come. "You've got a
boy on the Sands this time, don't you?"
He smiled looking into his drink and nodding "That I do" he said. It
didn't seem the young man he'd found this afternoon could possibly be
his son. What a difference three turns could make. "I've transferred
back to watch him impress and grow into the rider I know he can be."
Then he looked back at the bluerider "You're G'waren aren't you?"
"That I am," he smiled. "Manarth's my lifemate."
D'ale nodded. "I believe I met your son earlier."
"Small, dark, very shy?" G'waren grinned, thinking of his tiny child.
The boy took after his even smaller mother.
"Yes, thats him!" he said "but he was very helpful, good lad there."
"Yeah, he's a good boy," G'waren said. He was hiding something, that
child. He had taken to sleeping in the weyr with Manarth and T'bel's
little green, Farth. T'bel knew something was wrong, the dragons
knew, but he--the boy's own father--was being kept out of the loupe.
**You won't tell me?**
}:No:{
**Great, just great**
He sensed the big blue's amusement. Downing half his pint, he asked
D'ale," how's your boy?"
"Hard to say." he said "he wasn't exactly pleased to see me" he took
another drink. "Of course its really my own fault for not being around
the last three turns. But, I think he'll do just fine."
"Boys, they're a surly bunch."
He smiled ruefully "We were that way too," he said remembering what
he'd put his own through. "But we came through it just fine."
G'waren laughed. "I suppose so. So, you're boy's chances are good,
d'you think?"
"That he'll Impress? Yes." he nodded, "but I never can call it. I
guess wrong every time when I try to guess what color of dragon will
choose him. So, I'm just leaving this one alone. How about yours?"
"I think so. He's so quiet, it's hard to tell. But he does seem to
have a nice way with dragons. He's actually taken to bunking in with
mine and my weyrmate's." He shook his head, musing over the comical
picture of Galwen swamped by his two sleeping mates. "But colour?
I'm hoping for blue, like my Manarth. I don't think he's brown or
bronze material."
D'ale smiled "Well he seems to think you're expecting him to Impress
bronze. Or at least thats what he told me."
"Yeah...well." G'waren laughed sheepishly. "It'd be nice. I'd just
hate to see him with a green. He's not very robust, if you know what
I mean." He shuddered to think of his child in a Flight situation.
He shrugged, "Yes, I know what you mean. But, I'm sure he'll be ok."
G'waren took another drink before asking, "how's your brown doing
these days? Are the greens here to his liking?"
"Torerath is good, he's a great Thread fighter." he was quite proud of
his lifemate. }:I love you too mine:{ They were just getting
familiarized with the changes in the population since their last stint
at Dragons Fall. "He seems to be a favorite amongst them wherever we
go. But he hasn't chased since we got back. 'Tho I expect expect I'll
wake up one of these days with a nice armful." he grinned.
"Or a hairy one," G'waren teased.
D'ale laughed "Yes" he said. That had happened to him on occasion but
not with any great frequency. "So why do you think your son's sleeping
with the dragons? Sorry, don't answer that if it's too personal."
"Don't worry," G'waren looked thoughtful before continuing, "I think
he may be getting bullied. I suppose being small makes him an easy
target. I'm sure my mate knows, and the dragons know, but to be
honest, that's all I can come up with. His mother was tiny, he just
takes after her."
"I can understand how he feels about the holder bred. They can be
awfully high minded at the beginning. I imagine he's feeling the brunt
of it with his size. I said something to my son Kendale. He'll be
keeping an eye out." D'ale smiled.
"You're a good man, D'ale. Let me get the next pint for you." G'waren
stood to do just that.
