G'nir

G'nir
J'darin

J'darin

As a new Weyrleader, one of the first things G'nir was doing, was meeting
all the wingleader's face to face. He wanted to learn to know them. He
checked his schedule, who's turn it was next. Ah, the Weyrlingmaster,
J'darin. Now, there was a fellow bronzerider G'nir felt he could respect. He
had been Weyrleader in Dolphin Cove and he had lost because of injury, not
because he lost a Flight. He had been a good Weyrleader based on what he had
heard, strict and not hesitating to make hard decicions.

Arriving at the appointed time, J'darin knocked once, then let himself in
the partially open door. He was expected, so didn't feel odd about it.

It was surprising, frankly, that Hygalia's queen had chosen G'nir's bronze
out of all the well-qualified chasers. Perhaps she .. and the Weyr... were
ready for a completely new start? Perhaps.

He was for the most part glad Hasaarth had not won, though he was sorry for
his bronze. Though he had Impressed here, he still felt Dolphin Cove was
_home_ and was just not ready to take up Weyrleadership somewhere else,
yet. Maybe eventually. He would have done it, of course, and been glad to
do it, but he found he was just as glad he did not have to, and his only
worry would be the Weyrlings he was training.

They were worry enough.

He had wondered, though, if T'mahl would want his old job back as
Weyrlingmaster. He would be just as happy to serve as T'mahl's 'Second, if
the bronzerider _did_ want his old job back. Perhaps G'nir would tell
him?

These thoughts passed quickly by and he smiled at the new Weyrleader of
Dragonsfall. "Good day, Weyrleader."

"Good day, Weyrlingmaster. How are our weyrlings doing?" G'nir replied.

J'darin almost laughed aloud hearing the 'our'. But, the man was entitled,
he supposed. He was Weyrleader now.

Instead, he just smiled. "They are doing fine, G'nir. I worry; but then,
what Weyrlingmaster doesn't worry about his charges day in and day out? The
oldest class finished their blooding last month and should be ready to move
into the Wings. Onnyth's last clutch is in month 3 of their training and
doing well. I can't wait to have a new group from Genith's clutch. How
are you settling into your new position?"

"I'm settling in well. I was _born_ to be in this position," G'nir replied.
He certainly wasn't one to hide his glows under the basket.

J'darin blinked and was momentarily at a loss for words. Yes, him. Shards!
Is that what _all_ bronzeriders sounded like? Did _he_ sound like that?

To cover his momentary lack of speech, he nodded as if he agreed. "Of
course, the queens always know." In his mind, he was thinking to himself
that what had Nyith done when she hadn't been able to choose Hasaarth
again? She must have chosen the best of the choices.... but what if
Hasaarth had been chasing that fateful day?

But, now he had Weyrlings to train. And a new Weyrleader to get used to.

"I brought a hide or two showing the current status of all the Weyrlings,
Weyrleader. That way, you can put the graduated ones into Wings. They're
ready." He finished a bit more fiercely than he started. They had better
be ready! No more I'ster's on his watch, please.

"Good. Very efficient from you," G'nir nodded with satisfied expression on
his face.

J'darin chuckled a little at the statement and just nodded. "Every now and
then, I have an efficient moment. It doesn't seem to last past the next
weyrling scuffle or Candidate scrape! You've never been a Weyrlingmaster,
have you G'nir?" He didn't think the man had, but he couldn't quite recall
everything about him right now. Too many weyrlings to think about...

"No, I haven't been it that position," G'nir replied. "I have been a
Wingleader for many Turns."
He leaned backwards, relaxed. "Do we have enough candidates?" he asked.

J'darin searched his memory. Ahh, the man had Impressed here, though in a
clutch a few turns prior to when he Impressed Hasaarth, but then had gone to
the North for some reason. Wondering briefly about that, he nonetheless
answered the man's question. "We could use a few more. Depending on the
size of our new Queen's clutch, we should think of doing a Search. We have
... enough... but its always best to give the dragons as much choice as
possible."

"I agree. I send the Searchriders out. I noticed we have some very good
Search riders. I have to compliment T'mahl for snatching back good riders
from Dolphin Cove weyr," That refered to J'darin too. It was deliberate.
G'nir knew he need to have a good relationship with the Weyrlingmaster.

J'darin chuckled, as he was meant too, and nodded in thanks. "Well this
rider from Dolphin Cove is glad to be home again." He didn't say _why_ but
it was just possible that J'darin's inability to adjust and work with
N'vanik who now ran _his_Weyr had been among some of the rumors flying about
in the last turn.

It was funny, really, to call Dragonsfall home, yet still feel that the
people at Dolphin Cove were his.

"T'mahl was easy to work with, being the Weyrlingmaster before he became
Weyrleader. I'd suggest you make use of both T'mahl and D'wrayt in
important positions, if you have need. Both of them have extremely
valuable experience with the people of this Weyr that I know you'll find
very helpful, and D'wrayt was the Weyrleader for turns upon turns here. He
might like to lend a hand." Most likely G'nir knew that, but he would
offer it anyway. It would be good for the Weyr itself, too.

"I'd like to hope we can work together just as well, G'nir." He smiled
then, a true smile.

"I hope too that we can work well together," G'nir replied. Deep down he
thought that J'darin's advices were useless. He didn't need anyones help.
Not D'wrayt's experience or T'mahl's skills. They were rivals. Of course,
keeping your friends closer and enemies even closer was always good
strategy.

Well take it or leave it. He had thought of asking D'wrayt or T'mahl to be
his 'second, and of course considered T'mahl wanting his old job back,
though it wouldn't be up to J'darin if that change ocurred. It would be up
to G'nir, and he just didn't know the man very well yet. And perhaps he had
presumed too much to offer advice. Silly, arrogant bronzerider that he
was. Inside his mind he was kicking himself for sounding like a right brat
at the first meeting with the new Weyrleader.

He extended his hand to shake. "Good start so far, I think. Any more
questions for me?" He asked, hoping to get out before he embarassed himself
any further, or at least what he perceived as embarassment. Who knew what
G'nir actually thought? He seemed satisfied and there were no bad feelings
surfacing. But who really knew?

"No, not today. I let you back to your work," G'nir's smile didn't falter.
"You're going to be even busier soon." He was expecting large clutch from
Nirreth and Genith.

J'darin smiled widely at that and nodded, standing. "I sincerely hope so,
sir. I am looking forward to it! Good day, Weyrleader." the bronzerider
tilted his head respectfully.

"Good day to you, Weyrlingmaster," G'nir replied and added respecting
gesture of his own. To him, J'darin seemed like a tough rival, the kind of
you could respect.
