An Unusual History

Writers: Devin, Chelle
Date Posted: 23rd September 2010

Characters: Rhosyn, R'masu
Description: Rhosyn and R'masu meet, talking about duties and personal histories.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 10, day 20 of Turn 5

Her sandals clacked against the stone floor. Rhosyn didn't notice. She
walked forward to admire the new tapestry that had made its way into
the Dining Cavern. The Weyr was visible, along with the ocean and many
dragons flying around. She thought it was well woven.

"Lovely, isn't it?" R'masu commented as he saw her admiring it.

"Quite. I'm pleased with how it turned out." Not that she had anything to
do with it since it had been commissioned long before she had been thought
of.

"Were you involved in the planning?" That would be interesting, since
the Weyrwoman hadn't been here long.

"Nope..but I like it." She turned, daring him to challenge her taste
in tapestries.

"I'm sorry, I've forgotten my manners. I'm R'masu, rider of brown
Kannoth." He offered his hand.

She took it and shook it, then released. "Well met. R'masu...where do you
come from then?" Rhosyn was trying to place his accent.

"Dragonsfall, although I've been here a good four turns now." R'masu
sometimes wondered if he would ever want to return to his old home. "I
hear you come to us from Vista Point."

"That's right, though I wasn't Weyrbred. I fostered there until I Stood."
Pulling a waterskin up that was attached to her belt, she took a few drinks.
**Hydrate in the heat**

"Fostering at a Weyr, now that's unusual."

She shrugged. A lot of things about Rhosyn were unusual. "We kids went
our separate ways and they had to find somewhere to take us. For me, it
ended up being the Weyr."

"Did you have family there?" He couldn't think of why else a holder
family would foster a child at the Weyr.

"Nope. The thing was..after Dad passed, Mom was desperate. And there
weren't too many places that were open to fostering, especially since there
were six of us so we sort of ended up wherever we ended up." Rhosyn
realized that it might have been the best thing to happen to her in some ways.

So she'd lost a father and then her family had been scattered to the
winds. "That must have been hard. Do you keep in touch with your
siblings?"

"No. I don't know where they are." She shrugged. "Yeah it was hard
getting used to the Weyr and how different it was and my fostermother,
but it worked out." Thankfully it had, in the end.

"And how do you like River Bluff so far?" he asked, shifting the subject.

"The heat is probably the main thing I'm having to adjust to. I feel like I
run around half naked half of the time to keep myself cool, but I'm working
on it. Other than that, people have been great." She counted herself lucky
since it could have been a bad situation, especially since Zharesti had poisoned
people.

"At the risk of speaking too soon, we're happy to have you." Many of
the Weyrfolk seemed relieved at the change in leadership.

"Very good to know." She smiled, relieved she didn't have to watch for a
knife in the back or worse. "So which wing are you in?"

"Torrent. U'das's Wing."

"Ah right..He's a funny one." Thoughts of the other older rider went through
her head, not the least of which were some of R'sedel's comments. "Do you
like it?"

R'masu nodded. "He's very capable. Very steady. I wouldn't be
surprised if he became Weyrleader again someday."

"A lot of people keep saying that. Are there no younger bronzeriders in this
Weyr that are capable besides K'reyel of course?" She gestured as she spoke,
then looked at him curiously.

"I admit to some bias, since I get to observe his leadership skills on
a regular basis." Other bronzeriders might be capable, but U'das had
proven he could handle the job.

"So what else do you do with your time, R'masu?" Rhosyn had knew it
was almost time for midday meal and she was beginning to smell the food.

"I fancy myself a composer. I even perform at the Vintner Hall Tavern
on occasion."

"Oh?" Now that piqued her interest. "And what do you compose about?"

He shrugged. "Whatever strikes my fancy at the time. I've done Gather
songs with simple lyrics and longer instrumental pieces, and several
things between."

"And why aren't you Weyrharper then?" Rhosyn wondered about that,
thinking to herself.

"First, because we have a perfectly capable one, and second, because
it's not something I was ever interested in." He still wanted to
attain his Mastery, eventually. "And besides, fighting Thread makes
such an additional responsibility difficult."

"And yet, we have dragonhealers that manage." She smiled, walking
slower. "But I can respect that. I'd like to hear one of your songs sometime."

"I play in the dining cavern from time to time. I can send a message
along through our dragons the next time I play."

"Please do. And now, I must go and play nice with the Master Tanner.
Clear skies to you, R'masu." She gave a quick grin before she turned to
go.

"And to you, too, Weyrwoman."
